Why are people bothering to argue with Modo?
Seriously?
Who cares if he thinks Barnes is better than Gerrard?
Becuase it's a football forum ... and it's an interesting debate for those involved?
Its not a debate. A debate can have an outcome.
True.

To clarify im not getting at Modo at all, but he's made his decision and arguing with it is only making him post words strung together that are even more annoying than the original suppositions.
Thats fair. However your team of Gerrards does make a strong point.
But Im not gonna budge.
Returning to the original discussion, no he's not the greatest imo.
1. Dalglish
2. Barnes
3. Gerrard
4. Rushie
5. Hansen

Swap Gerrard with Barnes, and the late 80's team doesn't skip a beat.

The 'Gerrard years' Liverpool wouldn't win a thing.

It's not a discussion. It's just you responding to anyone else's opinion with "He's not. Your wrong. Barnes is bestest." over and over again and then just blag some info of wiki and try and stone face your pick to be the best. Barnes you could say is more pleasing on the eye with his trophies and his technique and natural ability. But Gerrard is the same minus a few medals.

If your three nil down against whatever cunty team in the final of the world bestest championship ever tourno and you've used two subs already. An you looking at Barnes or Gerrard. Cos Henderson is actually shit. Then Barnes would get told to stay comfy and have something to eat.

Yeah Gerrard does have a knack of turning games around singlehandedly. But Id still pick Barnes in his prime. He probably wouldnt score the goals himself but he'd probably influence the game as much.

Barnes is a legend and for whatever reason you rate him over Stevie. Thats fine with me.

For me no one will compare to Stevie and nothing could change my mind. I respect those who prefer Dalglish (and there is a select few others i could kinda fathom of which Barnes is one along with Hansen, Rush, Souness, Hughes and a couple of others) and obviously growing up as a Liverpool fan in the 80's Kenny has a special place in my heart, but purely as a player, Gerrard is better for me.

Fair enough, I probably tried to shove it down your throats but basically it's just a difference of opinion.
Barnes had his traits and Gerrard has his. In my equation Barnes comes out on top and in yours Gerrard does.

No, he wouldn't. Put Barnes in Istanbul instead of Gerrard, and we've have lost 6-0.

that's speculation. you could argue barnes would have far more impact in the first half than kewell and as such we wouldn't have completely lost control of the game (this is also speculation).

It's Gerrard, cos he's the first name that came into my head when I read this thread title.
Interesting. He's actually the first name that popped into my head when I read the title as well.

I'd choose Gerrard over Kenny - although only just. In fact it sometimes has a little bit to do with the football I've watched most recently.

However, Gerrard comes out on top because I think he is the greatest example of a player being able to take a game by the throat and shake the living crap out of it until it obeyed him. Kenny is absolutely a legend and he did things in games that I don't think Stevie or any other Liverpool player has ever done nor ever will. He had a touch of magic about him that even Stevie doesn't have. But magic/talent/brilliance isn't what it's all about. A player who can simply stand up and stop a game following a certain path, stop the momentum of an opposition team and then start the momentum for his own team; that's something unique.

For all his brilliance the king needed players around him; he rarely went back and took the ball off the CB, carted it up the field and fed Rush.....or scored himself. Whelan et al needed to do their job in order for Kenny to demonstrate why he's the king. Make no mistake, I can't think of any player I'd rather have up there when the ball does arrive. But that's not the extent of football - that's just an aspect of it. Gerrard is the one I'd want picking up the ball from Sami, Carra or Yeats. He's the one I'd want carrying it through midfield ahead of just about anyone else I've seen. He's also very close to the one I'd want to see with the ball at his feet when it reaches the opponents penalty area. He sums up just about all there is in football and he was/is as close as it gets to the best in every one of those areas.

As for Barnes; he'd be top ten. I watched him countless times and he was spellbinding out wide. But I'd be arguing numerous other players with him. Gerrard and Kenny wouldn't get any arguments - at least not on logic.

ha fucking ha, many a true word spoken in jest. How do we know he wasn't or Billy Liddel, or any of the other pre war players.
One thing i do know is that anyone who thinks Gerrard at his prime was a better player than Dalglish at his does not know shit.
John Barnes? Do me a favour, might get in my top seven.
Regards

In my lifetime its easily Gerrard, there is almost nothing he can't do.

I can't compare him with Dalglish or anyone else from another era because I'm not qualified.

I wonder if those of you saying Gerrard is without qualification Liverpool's greatest ever player could do me a favour, just to help me understand this outlandish view, and tell me how old you were in 1977?
