Pros:
  • technically very adept. Very press-resistant, can turn on a sixpence, routinely takes the first man out of the equation with a dribble
  • will win duels, both aerial and ground, by virtue of of his sheer frame alone - 6'3 with long legs, and reasonable athleticism
  • very clean injury record, with a demonstrated capacity for high volume work-rate. 2 seasons worth of 3000+ minutes at Ajax, while he was still a teenager, which is very impressive
Cons
  • not an event-creator either offensively or defensively. Not a metronomic passer or controller, not a player of defence-splitting passes. He's mostly a conservative passer in the mould of a Wijnaldum or Henderson
  • Defensively, he wins duels at the moment mostly because of his frame, and not because of his intent or desire to dominate. He should be an absolute monster given his size, but he isn't. Half-assed in his tackling at times
  • Not unathletic per se, but lacks elite-level lateral quickness. Does pretty ok in foot races down the flanks, but in the middle of the park, he's a half-step slow in arriving for the press or in arriving at tackles
Overall
  • not a transformative player at all, but someone who is in desperate need of Klopp's coaching and guidance. Needs that to learn to focus on what he's really good at, and work on his weaknesses
  • Is criticised for being lazy, but I think that's untrue and that stems more from his languid playing style. His running and work-rate numbers are pretty good
  • He's not a #6 - his best role is as a generalist #8, who puts in a massive shift, and can play the #6 for short durations - basically Henderson/Wijnaldum part deux
  • How will he help us? Don't think he's an alternative to Endo, but probably a better option than Jones or Elliott for one of the backup #8 roles. He'll be much fitter than Jones, and he'll be a much more physical and athletic option than Elliott

Bakayoko at PSV is getting the odd mention as well - more like a long term replacement for Mo - can be registered as an U21 this season and next - probably cost £20m.

Seemingly depends on whether PSV get past Rangers and into the CL tomorrow night.

I’d be all for splurging what we apparently were going to on Lavia on Gravenberch & Bakayoko instead.

Still nothing on a CB - so I presume we’re not going for one.

Talk of United trying to do a loan swap between him and Mctominay.

We should be all over this regardless, even more so if that’s what United’s offer is.

So a Lucas/Diao/Poulsen then.

What doesn’t make sense to me about this is him moving away from Bayern to get more playing time at LFC. He might get marginally more, but we’re not benching Szobo or Macca or Thiago for him. I don’t see how we’re the right fit for him if playing time is really what he’s after.

Well, Thiago and Jones are very injury prone. So he'll effectively be competing with Elliott for the spot of the first midfielder off the bench.

He also wont count as a NHG, and the fee mentioned isnt particularly high. One of those were it makes sense to take a chance.
Was very impressive when we played Ajax at Anfield. Never should have moved to Bayern.

What I've been saying all along

Yup, hence why I think he moves to Man U - where he will play more.

He'll play in the games where we don't really need a specialist 6, Trent will be the inverted 6.

But you are right, he's not going to be first choice here either.

He seems like someone who could be moulded into a Wijnaldum type; agree with his characterization as a “supporting player” rather than a “spinal” one - but good supporting players can be incredibly valuable too. I can see why Klopp would be attracted to a player with such obvious shortcomings in his game that can and will be fixed with good coaching - he probably thinks he can really help him improve in a relatively short time.

Tactically I feel he suits United’s needs more - he would be a much better partner for Casemiro than Mount, but it would also be understandable if he is eager to work with Klopp. I think this will go down to the wire.

We're going to have a spell at AFCON in Jan, where szob will probably move rw, opening up RCM for him.

Add in mo might move at some point, that again opens up RCM as szob might become permo. We have a lot of games and not many midfielders.

Also depends whether he wants to vary his mentors. He's worth with ETH before. He might want to see what klopp can do with him

I haven't seen stats on Szobo so I can't confirm it but his ball progression stats must be crazy good which is why I don't want to see him moved from midfield. We need someone like that in there. I'd rather see Jota play on the right when Salah is away

All fair. I just know szob has played a lot on the wing previously, and klopp might like a more solid base

On the other hand I can see Szobo at #10 behind Nunez a la Gerrard-Torres. Not sure Klopp would agree, but who knows…

Jota or Diaz can play RW while Salah is away.

That's true he'd probably do a good job too, I just don't want us to go back to that rigid midfield we've had

I was wondering whether he'd out Ali Mac there; as he covers Trent well as well, and still allows creativity on the right side.

He's another I don't know much about. I've heard his name banded anoutnaince he was a nipper, but he hasn't caught my eye

That rigid midfield was the heart of our success
Yeah because we had a younger Salah, with Mane etc.
We also need to evolve. Have we not complained through the years that our midfielders aren't getting enough goals/assists?

I don't know much about him but everyone who describes him tells me loads of things he can't do. I would like him to sign for manure.

I don't see how we need him, and for those saying his physicality replaces what Elliott can't give, Elliott is dynamic and quick thinking, especially off the bench. Look at Sunday. He's progressed a lot of late, I'd rather see more of him than him be sacrificed for someone apparently so technically and dynamically limited. We need another player who can alternate in a double pivot, ideally a young DM option cf Lavia, who has a bit more to offer as an all rounder, but who first and foremost can anchor and provide good protection for the backline.

Don’t forget Endo to the Asia Cup as well.

I'd rather have him than not. There's plenty there for Klopp to work with. The injury records of Thiago and Jones are well known, even Bajectic is returning from a long lay off and will need his minutes protecting. There's also the very real possibility of Endo having to cover at CB or RB at some stage, and he's playing in the Asia Cup.

As for development games there's plenty ahead in the cups and the Europa League.

This + he seems to go cry like a little bitch to the media every 5 minutes because he isn't getting game time (and that's under 2 different managers now). I'd stay clear
