Golf Handicap

Any golfers on here?

I'm organising a company outing in a couple of weeks. There are around 22 playing, half of which dont have a proper handicap. Is there a general rule for allotting a handicap to these players in this situation? Some people are saying that they should be given 18 but then again some are saying that might not be very fair as the majority arent regular players.

Let me know your thoughts.

P.s. move this if i have it in the wrong forum.

I would have thought that eighteen isn't a very generous handicap for players who don't play the game.
Something closer to twenty five would be more appropriate in my view.

Rather that having the match as singles have you considered some sort of team competition?
That way if each team contains roughly the same number of playing and non playing golfers then the handicaps wont be quite so important.

This always annoys me. 3 cards and u can get a handicap or at least an idea of one online. I played a comp recently and it was won by a 21 handicapper with 46 points. Fucking bandit :-(

People who pick a handicap out of the air.

I know what you mean. But in this case i will have to assign a handicap to someone who doesnt have "proper" handicap. So asides from picking one out of the air i'd like to base it on something, hence why i'm asking the question.

That wasn't aimed at you. The players who don't have a handicap must have an idea of what they generally play to. I know plenty who give it the "oh yeah I've been shooting early and mid 80's recently but I'm off 20 for this comp". In other words they don't count the good rounds unless they are bragging and then expect their handicap to stay the same as it was.

But if they play badly they expect their handicap to go up a couple of shots at a time, when in reality it only goes up 0.1 of a stroke for every round over handicap, therefore you have to play over handicap 10 times in a row to get an upward adjustment.

People say they are only cheating themselves but...if they keep winning with 40+ points in stableford then they are also cheating the people the people who actually play to the rules.

There is a way of stopping it. Have one prize for people with official handicaps and have a lesser prize for those without. Then the incentive is there for those that don't to actually record and track their handicaps accordingly.

As you can see, it doesn't bother me...much 😛
