'my sources tell me that Mark Hughes has made a huge statement of intent by bidding £36 million for... Lee Cattermole'

'Meanwhile, sources outside the Chelsea hotel tell me that England captain, John Terry, will, sky sports believe, treat his mother to a cruise on Abramovich's £350m yacht'

Worst GKMacca impression ever.

Liverpool are confident of getting Johnson, who is understood to favour a move to Anfield rather than a return to Chelsea, who want to re-sign him after selling him to Portsmouth two years ago.

Anyone else noticed how players never (I know some cunt will tell me one now) wanna return to Chelsea once they've left?

I'd wait before applying that to johnson.

If this is true then what the fuck? Do we really need a right back for £9m?(2008)

I don't mind Johnson and I do think he is better than Arbeloa but do we NEED him? We need a winger for he right, oh wait? Is he wanting to play a right back on the wing?

I think that's exactly how he is thinking.

???

£18m and rising. I no longer want this guy, The media strikes again. One good game for England against dross. It will be 25 in a few days.

According to the Telegraph, Pompey have accepted our bid of £17m, which includes the £7m Crouch debt:

Despite competition from Chelsea and Manchester City, Liverpool remain hopeful of signing England defender Glen Johnson after Rafael Benitez's £17 million bid was accepted by Portsmouth, with part of the fee covered by the Anfield club writing off £7 million owed for Peter Crouch.

Guess he'll be our first signing of the summer.

we have a capable fullback in arbeloa but we have definately (providing he signs) become a stronger squad with johnson. this signing pleases me.
years of going on about attacking fullbacks and now it looks like its finally going to happen with johnson and insua. I don't know if I'm happy or scared we're going to start leaking goals for fun.

The last few times I've seen Johnson, he's been caught in possession at the back on more than one occasion.

He needs to learn to think faster and avoid those lapses of concentration. At the top level, you can't afford to make those sort of mistakes.

my unbiased opinion of johnson is he is one of the best attacking fullbacks out there but is dragged out of position far too easily. I'd be worried but I think our defense coaches will school him properly (although to be fair they didn't help riise).

Got a feeling he will go Chelsea if he gets told he is no 1 choice.

naw, once bitten twice shy.

So we're prepared to spend 17m on a defender that can't defend. Yippee.

he'll recieve more protection here (kuyt, alonso masherano) than at pompy or england.

17 million on a Right back?
bloody heck, do we really have that kind of money to spend on a RB and still have lots left for a quality attacking player, while keeping all our other valuable assets?
17 million is crazy money. I'm very surprised he'd pay that when we already have a very capable right back.
Arbeloa might be going to Madrid.

Still the point stands, £17m for a FB that can't defend iyo?

I'm all for attackin full backs and this signing would please me too. But the transfer fee would suggest that hes world class when hes clearly not. It also must mean that arbeloa wil leave as i cant see him being happy to be second choice.

who wants a player happy to be second choice? arby will hopefully up his game to try and secure a first team place which is a good thing.

Which means we could have a 17 million full back sitting on the bench!
do we want a strong squad or not. people really need to move beyond the idea of a 'first 11' is old, outdated. the way to thing about the squad is 22 players who have the ability to challenge for the CC, FAC, CL and league. personally I think we have the personnel to challenge for the league and at a push the CL only and even then if we concentrate on one we don't have the depth to challenge for the other.

That would be fine if our finances were as generous as City or Chelsea's. But they're clearly not. As it is, I'm baffled as to how we're supposedly bidding for both Johnson AND Tevez. What happens if they both say yes to us? Er, anyone got a spare £42m?

*mini rant mode*

19 years and counting, and as far as I'm concerned no excuse is valid anymore. gerrard injuried? we should have the squad to cope. torres injuried? we should have the squad to cope. alonso injuried? we should have the squad to cope. injuries are part and parcel of the game but when arbeloa was injuried we were shifted jamie and *shudder* skrtel to right back, we were weaking the center of defense and unbalanced at fullback, we dropped points. who knows of the 2 points dropped at home to everton (with carra at right back) or the three points away to m'bro (with skrtal at right back) could have been secured if we had a dedicated fullback there. sure its a push but like I said injuries cost us and I no longer count injuries as a valid excuse. I applaud rafa for adding depth to a position that needs it. that all I give a shit about.

*end mini rant*

Players are only worth what a club is prepared to pay, full back or otherwise. It's the manager's budget to spend how he sees fit, and if the figures are true he obviously feels a powerful attacking full back is a top priority.

Its 10 mill though, if you look away from the Crouch money. Those 7 mill was probably tied up in some payment structure anyway. And as for Tevez, thats 6,25 mill pr year if its divided into 4 years. So that means our budget outlay for 2009 will be 16,25 mill.

I agree and i hope we sign johnson but i do think the fee is excessive. But if thats what it takes and if he stil has funds for his other targets, without havin to sell top players, then so be it.

exactamondo.

Its 17 million Hansern whatever way you look at it. And if rafa sees a right back as being a top priority then if mustn't fancy arbeloa too much. For that reason the only way i can see johnson comin is if arbeloa is sold for around 8 million.

£17 million is ludicrous money, I like him as a player but that kind of money is absurd for a full back.

I understand its not £17 million straight, and we will recoup half from selling Arbeloa but thats crazy money.
