how can the first choice right back and the best right back at the club bar none (gerrard patently isn't going to play there ever again) not be concidered 'key'.
when someone else plays at right back (including the great carra) we are weaker, simple as.
Don't miss the chance to have a snide dig at Carra to back up your ever increasing desperate views.
you're far too sensitive about carra and wanting two fullbacks is hardly a 'desparate' view.
You're far too snidey about him. Too scouse for you?

Its true that wedropped points in games he missed but he also was at fault for some points dropped. Mistake vs arsenal for one. Arbie is certainly an important first team player at the moment because hes our best right back. However, if we sign a better player for that position then hes not at important. My description of a key player is one who we cannot afford to lose and that would be extremely difficult to replace without spending exorbitant amounts of money. Arbeloa is not in that bracket.

let's get one thing clear, I think carra is the best center back we have but I can appreciate our other center back and don't subscribe to the 'carra + one' bollox that seemingly makes out he is the only competant center back we have. I also think arbeloa is a MUCH better fullback so no, I wasn't pleased when carra was moved to right back when arbeloa was injuried which is what would happen if we sold arbeloa and johnson got injuried or suspended.
so whilst I think carra is a top top defender I don't subscribe to the carra worship and it has fuck all to do with him being 'scouse', seriously, so fucking what?

He's talking shite about Carra. We secured more points with him at right back than not, and, one or two games aside, we looked a far more solid unit overall.

*carra dig alert for david*

that was carra's fault for heading it to arbeloa instead of clearing his lines (which, let's be honest he does 9/10)

*end carra dig alert*

if you think we look a more balanced team with carra at right back then arbeloa then I''' leave it there, I would have nothing further to say on the subject.

Carra worship?

Is that like Arbeloa worship?

You're like a little kid.

There are ways of making your point without belittling Carra because he just happens to be a popular player.

I've never heard of this 'carra + 1' bollox, as you so elequently put it. Is this the majority view or did you just pick isolated opinons to back up your obvious agenda?

arbeloa worship? since when did wanting a top pro to remain at the club despite another top pro arrving for competition = worship.

dear me...

I was just highlighting your childish stupidity.

I think this inane discussion has run its course now.

oh, saying carra is better at center back than fullback isn't 'belittling'.
saying arbeloa is better at fullback than carra isn't 'belittling'.
I'm starting to think you ARE carre.

the ideal summer for me is none of the key players leaving and us buying a right back and left midfielder/forward with our entire kitty plus sales. I class arbeloa amongt our key players (just my opinion). this we we strengthen were we need to strengthen with getting weaker in the process.
buying a right back and selling a right back isn't progression for me unless johnson has the strength/stamina to play every single game this season which he patently doesn't.
I consistently defended Arbeloa this season from several clueless people on here claiming that he's a liability. He's an excellent defender who suffered with tiredness towards the end of the season (which is no surprise given that he'd played nearly every game.

That said, I don't think even the most ardent Arbeloa fans could claim that he's a 'key player'. He's not an essential cog in the machine. He's a very reliable part but he's by no means irreplaceable. If there's one area where he could significantly improve in it's his attacking game. Johnson, while not as good defensively, is FAR superior going forward. He's has come on leaps and bounds with his defending in his time at Portsmouth and with Rafa's strong emphasis on defending there's no reason to assume that won't continue.

I think he represents a risk worth taking and one that could add a whole new dimension to the team.

Riera is our best left winger at the club. Is he a key player?

If they can easily be replaced with a superior player then they're not 'key' as far as I'm concerned.
different. reira isn't clearly first choice, you could easily put yossi there (and to a lesser extent babel) and not get a discernable difference in quality.
And if you put Johnson there? In place of Arbeloa?

Every time I have an exchange with you it always seems to be circular.
as far as I am aware johnson isn't on the books. I'm talking right now. if johnson joins then he will go from 'key' to valid member of the squad. like yossi. that's a point, if we bought silva then shouldn't we sell reira, babel and yossi? after all we only need one left midfielder.
You're missing the point. That is, that Arbeloa has one year remaining on his contract (with no signs that he's about to sign a new one) and that there is (reportedly) an £8m bid on the table for him. Given this set of circumstances, and the fact that we're heavily linked with Johnson, I would suggest that if we're going to lose the player, we could do a lot worse than make the most of the cash we'll get for him this season and invest in a worthy replacement. ie. Glen Johnson.

Of course, in an ideal world, we would retain Arbeloa, and he would happily sit on the bench playing second fiddle to his replacement. I suspect however, that we cannot afford to spend £17m on a right back without the funds that Arbeloa would bring, and that given our financial restraints, perhaps an upgrade on Arbeloa and some faith in our current backup is our best option.

Lads, no offence, but lets not have another thread ruined by playground antics.
I'll play nice, honest 🙂

if arbeloa signs a new contract fine keep him, if he doesn't sell him to madrid for 8-10 million. arbeloa is a very good player but if he doesn't sign we need to sell him

we're in a no lose situation with the signing of johnson.

say arbeloa stays the money from crouch and doseena raises 13 million (most of johnson's fee)

if arbeloa goes the money from crouch (7 million) doseena (6 million) and arbeloa (say at least 8 million) pays for johnson at 17 million and most of saviola, the other kinda nearly done deal.

no idea what all the tantrums are about.

okay, I understand the financial reasons for selling but from a personal point of view I want arbeloa to stay. I can't really add more than that. I will certainly understand an arbeloa sale but I will be disappointed non the less.

Heh.. not really.. FWIW, I actually agree with you.. but why you've continued to entertain David for so long, i'll never know.. you made your point earlier.. he's clearly got his other opinions.. why bother try and change them? it's only made you both look a bit petty with the insults and taken away from the good point (i thought) you made earlier.

Not too fussed about Arbeloa really. He's steady, can do a job but if he wants to go and we can get a decent fee then getting a replacement shouldn't be that difficult.

Not too keen on Johnson as a person but as a player he's quite good.

As long as we are not losing out financially then its not a situation worth getting upset over is it? Exchanging one decent enough full back for another one?

Yeah, but it's what SpiderNeil wants that counts. Plus Arby is a top pro...and not scouse.
