Deco's the only one I fully understand.

Alex has had a strong season but Cavalho's a cut above.

They're loss.

Carvalho when fully fit is in the top three defenders in the league. I certainly think he is better than terry.
he is world class (when injury free) i'm glad to see the back of him.

Unquestionably.  Terry's a good player but has benefited massively from having this guy alongside him covering for his chronic lack of pace (and Makelele doing the same in front of him in previous years).  Not only will they find Carvalho tough to replace, I also think there's a fair chance Terry's own performances will suffer (as they did last season when Carvalho wasn't there).

- The Crouch debt will reduce the impact upon our transfer budget
We would already have figured that into our budget anyway, so it'll make fuck all impact.

Its true that wedropped points in games he missed but he also was at fault for some points dropped. Mistake vs arsenal for one. Arbie is certainly an important first team player at the moment because hes our best right back. However, if we sign a better player for that position then hes not at important. My description of a key player is one who we cannot afford to lose and that would be extremely difficult to replace without spending exorbitant amounts of money. Arbeloa is not in that bracket.
I think everyone bar Spidey would agree with that

true, but its possible a deal could be arranged which restructures the payments giving us more leeway for wages for incoming players.

we have a set budget for players, say johnson played for spurs we would just arrange a fee and conclude the deal, johnson plays for a team that owes us money, seeing how pompy owe us money we could negotiate how the fee for johnson is paid taking into account the money they owe us (for crouch) so instead of (using an example) paying 5 mil up front we pay 2 mil up front leaving us with 3 mil we don't have to pay for a certain period of time, we could then use that money for incoming players.

We'd be able to negotiate how the fee is paid regardless of whether they owed us anything.

I guess...

I think it's a one horse race.

I don't believe Chelsea are in for him for one moment. Boswinga has been fine for them this past season.

If it is a one horse race then I would hope that we don't pay 17m for a full back.

I'd be very surprised if Rafa spent £17M on any defender. I'd imagine that if Pompey wouldn't budge from that price he'd hang on to Arbeloa and look for a replacement in January or elsewhere this summer.

I'd be absolute gutted if we spunked £17M on Johnson. In my eyes that sort of fee should be for a permanent fixture of the first team who's going to save/win games. I'm not won over by the Johnson. Half the figure and I'd be satisfied.

How long's he got left on his contract?

Ages, I would guess. He signed a new one in January, the tosser.

Dossena cost £8M, so i darsesay both Arbeloa and Johnson should cost more than that.
By that logic, I'd cost about £12m.

Personally I'd rather Arbeloa signed a 3 year contract extension next year providing us with a capable player and diverting the much needed funds to signing that classy wideman or whatever, then if push comes to shove he can be offloaded the following year; he can start for a title winning side in my opinion.

I'm not sure where all this Arbeloa bashing has come from, he has a bit of a dip in form and suddenly fucking glen johnson is however many times better.

Portsmouth accept Liverpool bid for Glen Johnson
Window watch: England right back could be on his way to Anfield after South Coast club accept £18.5 million offer
Gary Jacob, James Ducker
Liverpool had an offer of about £18.5 million for Glen Johnson accepted last night. The successful bid comes after they struggled to raise the money to buy him when he was valued at about £8.5 million in January.

The Portsmouth and England right back subsequently signed a new four-year contract, but his future club appears clearer with Chelsea unwilling to match the fee for a player they sold for £4 million two years ago. Manchester City expressed an interest, but have not matched the price, which will include add-ons.

Liverpool will raise funds from the potential sales of Ãlvaro Arbeloa and Andrea Dossena and from outstanding money that they are owed from the sale of Peter Crouch to Portsmouth for £11 million a year ago. The Anfield club have expressed an interest in Micah Richards, the Manchester City defender.

not sure about this.

The Times are reporting we've had a 18 million bid accepted and he's on his way. They are almost tabloid like these days, mind, and the media in general have been totally and utterly wrong about everything to do with us so far.

If true, you'd have to imagine that the full amount will include add ons dependant on success, etc. Although I doubt that will stop people quoting the full fee. What gets me, is if Johnson was up for a move to us why did he sign that long term deal in January.

I think the driver behind is that it is another English player, we only have 2 senior English players so to have 3 will help us have a bigger squad with more foreigners for the CL and bear in mind he's probably the best English player available and probably the best one likely to be available over the next few years

So Rafa's going to take a punt on Aurelio and Insua at left back if this is to believed.

I'd take that.

Me too. Should have done it last season and saved us the Dossena cash.
