Glen Johnson - done deal according to papers

Bound to be a heavily structured deal. I reckon 12 million rising to the 16 million mark is a more realistic sum. If we get a decent return on Dossena then all the better.

So 11M if you discount the Crouchie wonga they owe us?

That's not too bad.
It's still £18m.

So Rafa's going to take a punt on Aurelio and Insua at left back if this is to believed.
I'd take that.
Me too. Should have done it last season and saved us the Dossena cash.
hind sight is 20-20

mind you i supposed that dossena is used to seeing hind he's that slow

...and so it begins.

Torres cost us between 18 and 26 million depending on your agenda.

The Guardian are saying he's going to Chelsea for the same fee. They're all full of shit.

Fo sho.

It's got to be a structured £18.5m in the sense of

Probably £7m from Crouch settled, £6m upfront, with additional payments for trophies during his Anfield stay.

In all honesty, I'd take that, I really rate the guy.

that's a lot of money whichever way you look at it. whilst i wanted a right back alongside arbeloa i didn't want us spending 18.5 million on him. the lack of an improvement on arbeloa didn't cost us the title. the lack of options in attack did.

for 18.5 million i'd rather have promoted darby or gone bought srna.

all said and done i suppose it depends on what the team looks like at the end of the window, doseena's out, arbeloa with his contract running down probably also. as long as we get a world class left sided attacker and cover for torres we'll have bought players in positions most of us wanted.

wow that's still like nearly our record signing on glen johnson.

I just can't believe we'd pay that for Johsnon even if a significant part of it is based on clauses.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see. If we sign quality up front, no-one will care how much Johnson cost.

Portsmouth accept Liverpool bid for Glen Johnson

Window watch: England right back could be on his way to Anfield after South Coast club accept £18.5 million offer

Gary Jacob, James Ducker

Liverpool had an offer of about £18.5 million for Glen Johnson accepted last night. The successful bid comes after they struggled to raise the money to buy him when he was valued at about £8.5 million in January.

The Portsmouth and England right back subsequently signed a new four-year contract, but his future club appears clearer with Chelsea unwilling to match the fee for a player they sold for £4 million two years ago. Manchester City expressed an interest, but have not matched the price, which will include add-ons.

Liverpool will raise funds from the potential sales of Ãlvaro Arbeloa and Andrea Dossena and from outstanding money that they are owed from the sale of Peter Crouch to Portsmouth for £11 million a year ago. The Anfield club have expressed an interest in Micah Richards, the Manchester City defender.

I'll give my take on the situation.

If this deal does go through at 18.5 million, i'll be thinking yes this is pricey, had it been 15-16m, i'd have thought it would be a cracking deal. In reality 2-3 million is not alot when considering he could potentially be our RB for a very very long time. He's a brilliant athelte, grat stamina, and goes forward really really well, and can also DEFEND. A fullback who can attack well and defend in todays game is hard to come by, and in glen johnson, he will offer that.

It will take some time for people to realise this, but he will slot well in that position, and overlap when we need him, providing that all important width.

Would be a cracking signing if this happens, fingers crossed.

Thing is, you'll never please everyone with the fee. Some complain that we're not pro active enough and get outbid, and then complain when we over pay and seal the deal. I blame the internet.

As long as the manager gets his main targets and they improve us, I'm past caring how much they cost. I'm a fan not an accountant.

18 million.
Either Rafa has millions waiting to be spent on an attacking player or he is an absoluter nutter, 18 million on a RB, bloody heck

Agree with the point in general, just not if it comes at the cost of lack of improvement elewhere ie at the moment attacking threat

If it's £11m and that mean's we've lost £7m elsewhere, it's effectively £18m.

Not sure why some seem to think it's fine to "lose" £7m.

I have to laugh when people said last year that they wish we could afford to spend 15-20 million on a RB when Chelsea did. Maybe this is one of the 2 players Rafa wants. Now an attacking player in the same price bracket maybe a bit more.

Sorted.

What the fuck sort of logic is that. Overpaying is overpaying. You are a salesman's dream.

He's a good, but not spectacular right back. Spending 18.5 is fucking ludicrous, even in this market, even with his being English, even with him currently being an England international.

He's perhaps an incremental improvement on what we have, based on a shaky end of the season by Arbeloa, and promising displays by Johnson. We aren't going to recoup more than half the transfer on Arbeloa. Even if we sell Arbeloa to finance the deal, is it worth spending a third or more of our transfer budget this summer on a right back, when we have other pressing concerns? 2-3 million is the difference between us being gouged on the deal, and there being an argument it is reasonable.

This is a bit like the Alves situation really. Rafa wasn't given the additional few million we needed to sign him, however pricey it seemed at the time. Perhaps now he's got the control he wanted, he's willing to go the extra mile.

Ha.

HC, it's 18m, whether the 7m was from the Crouch deal or not, it simply changes the structure of the payments, not the fee.

Ignoring the fact that we haven't signed him yet, and are probably also in the market for a striker/winger, Rafa obviously feels a quality attacking full back will give us the edge we need as opposed to the usual lustings for 'attacking players' who could just as easily flop, ala Keane.

As long as we get a top left winger cum forward then I'll look the other way when it comes to the price of this deal.

Whilst the price is 18m.. the 7m from Crouch could have been a million each year for the next 7 years.. if Rafa's happy to forego those installments and take a chance on using all available monies (present and near future money) now, then i guess we have to trust him. After all, Gerrard and Torres aren't going to be young forever and it's vital this summer we get it right this summer, whatever the price.

Shame he is still not at the club.. but it would be oh so fitting...

I have reservations about this one. I think Johnson is a good player, but no more than that. He's definitely a better crosser than Arbeloa and I think that in itself would have turned around a few of the 0-0 draws we had this year.

I think defensively in one on one situations I'd prefer Arbeloa, but then again I have to think that the players Johnson will play with and the coaches he'll learn from will improve him no end while he's here.

I wonder has Arbeloa stalled / refused to sign a contract extension and that's why he's being shipped out ?
