Glen Johnson - done deal according to papers

That's a bit of a daft thing to say, seeing as Rafa didn't trust Darby to start a single league game last season. What makes you so sure he'd provide Arbeloa with the competition and back-up he so clearly needs?

Wasn't Darby due to start a match at some stage when Alvaro got injured but got himself injured as well? It may have been the Boro match when Skyrtel played there.
I am pretty certain that our insider told us that around the time of the match and he was usually spot on with team news.

Why is that daft? Anytime i've seen Darby play i've been impressed. Therefore i'd be happy enough if we had Arbeloa as first choice with Darby as back up. I'd probably be even happier if we signed Richards or Johnson but i'd prefer to spend whatever funds we have in other areas.

I wouldn't be particularly enthused about having Darby as backup to be honest. I know he's rated by some but he's never struck me as being Premiership material.

I'd love to be wrong though as it'd be great to have another local player in the mould of Carra coming through the ranks.

I too would like to see Darby given a chance but we are a true title-challenging team now and Johnson does improve us in a position where we have an identified (if not necessarily urgent) need. This window of opportunity for the current squad may only last a season or two before we need to start retooling again.

Regarding Johnson's price being a deterrent, that depends on our overall budget and whether purchasing him would keep us from affording our top attacking target(s) (or would necessitate selling Alonso).

Darby will not play more than 3 first team games next season. Could be loaned to some small clubs in the Championship. We need someone who is better than Arbeloa possibly, but we need to focus on left back, left wing and a striker.

At the prices recently quoted it would appear to be unlikely that Johnson will be arriving however his arrival at right back would probably strengthen left back with Arbeloa switching back again.

Why would Arbeloa switch to left back?? We have Insua there. Having said that, we need better than Insua at left back.

I have a big crystal ball with me. It says three. first. team. games. only. for. Darby. next. season.

That twit Jim White interviewed Peter Storey a few minutes ago on Sky. Storey confirmed Pompey have received a big offer from a top four club for Johnson and something will be sorted out soon. The ridiculous thing was White was so excited he managed to put the price up from £16m to £18m and then £20m in the space of a two minute chat.

Sky are goin to say who put bid in after this break. The suspense is killin me.

Us and Chelski.

No way will Rafa pay that much for Johnson. He's not that much better than Arbeloa; if anything he's worse defensively. Let Chelsea overpay again.

Biddin? Isn't he the vice president of the United States. I don't think you've spelt his name correctly though.

Is it just jealousy, but i'm really developing a healthy dislike for Man City. How comes they seemed to be linked with every target we're seemingly after, like a day or so later?

I rate Johnson - he's a good player, but if we have every right to be disappointed if e spend £14M+ on a fucking rightback

Is this theory about Pompey owing us money for Crouch which can be used as part of the Johnson deal credible or just more message board heresay?

Who knows.. but even if it's the case.. it's not like we'll be getting him any cheaper.

7m plus writing off a 7m debt is still a 14m transfer.

Jim White is an absolute dick. SSN are now proclaiming that the fee is 18 million, when it could be anything but.

Well yeah, but it makes a lot more sense than paying the full lot out of this summer's bugdet.

You're right, it is, but it'll reduce the impact upon our transfer budget.

Crouch's money would not have been included, leaving us with more money for other targets.

Who knows.. that Crouch money could have been spent elsewhere already, or earmarked for something else.. or already included in the budget. It's not just free money (as some people seem to think).
