Gerrard returning?

Klopp: on Gerrard: "All I can say is that I've had contact with Stevie - one phone call and a few messages." "He is a legend. If he's in Liverpool and wants to train ahead of next season in LA that's absolutely no problem. Nothing else."
Well that's settled then.

Irrespective of the quality of the writing, the message is correct.

I watched a few of his games last month and was disappointed at how poor he was. There could be many reasons - he may just not feel settled in LA, not like the weather and the travel, his heart is just not in it. Whatever maybe the reason, he is getting outplayed by bog standard midfielders and attackers.

To be fair this quote could have been written about Gerrard any time in the last 5 years

"It’s impossible for a team with a four-man midfield to provide a suitable shield for its defense when one central midfielder is useless at stopping the counterattack or picking up runners into the box."

It was plain to see last season that hes done physically

There is still a place for him in our side - he could do that DM role now - if not for the full 90 minutes then maybe for 60 minutes per game, and we need that experience. I don't think Klopp is going to get much money for the January transfer window - if we can buy out SG's loan contract it would be good business. We could have that cover and experience in midfield we require. I can see why Klopp did not take Lucas off on Saturday - he really did not have any choice in that area - he had taken Milner off already so we are kind of stuck.

Hope you're kidding. Gerrard DM role? No way in hell.

You're proving your username is accurate with that post.

Indeed, but those were never Stevie's strong points even earlier in his career. Playing him deep was a fairly desperate attempt to keep fitting him into the team well after that stopped being a sensible thing to do, because of his sheer clout within the club. It's one issue over which I have some sympathy for Rodgers, as it would have been a tester for any manager.

You don't know Modo - maybe his experience in the US will have taken the shit out of him to actually bomb forward like he used to. You cannot deny that a below par SG is still better than Lucas even now.

Him bombing forward was never the problem. The problem was him not knowing when to bomb forward.
That's the difference between a midfielder that is positionally sound and one that isn't.
If Benitez taught me anything it's that Gerrard never was suitable to play in midfield without protection.
But play him further forward in a free role with two players behind him and he's as close to world class as you can be.

I'm sure it has its perks. I, for one, would love to me a millionaire footballer living in New York where only a fraction of the population knew me.

I walked past that former barca striker on the street a couple of months ago. Can't remember his name. Spanish guy. Also played for Valencia.

To be fair, bombing forward wasn't even an issue really, because he didn't do it as much. When possession football worked, he worked at the root of the team, starting the build up from the back, that was fine. The problem, as we found out, was when we didn't have the ball.

And progressively he just declined anyway, he didn't have the legs to cover the ground, or the stamina to then get a boot in and be effective putting us back on the other foot.

I suppose mentally (after roaming through the best parts of his career) he still thought he could do it all in that sense, but his body just couldn't. The same happened with Barnes, he was an effective central playmaker for a while, but ultimately we were cut through midfield so many times. People forget the stick he got, rather similarly.

I would love to see him back dominating the center once again for Liverpool Football Klopp.

Hope it happens soon. Still the best midfielder we would have by far.

I'd love to have seen it too, but the time when it would have been possible is far behind him. Still our best midfielder? Have a word with your dealer. 😉

Wiberg would rather have the mighty Poulsen back. He hates Stevie nearly as much as Fabio does.

Easy now, cockyblock. No way I could ever hate him. I just think the last 5 years or so was...overrated...at least.

But hate - never. One of the best ever from 02-09 or there abouts.

I need a Gerrard break. Come back after we've had a spell without seeing your name constantly.
