Flanagan

Even though Lallana and Milner were the best 2 players on the pitch last night I'd make Flanno man of the match because from the 1st minute he set the tone of the whole game.

Trust the true form of 6CM, that when anyone is praised for a good performance, someone, at least one person, will be a total dick about it.

Yeah. People have short memories, like his good performances are outweighed by his bad ones, or something. He was terrific under Dalglish and continued that fine form in the "nearly" season under Rodgers. He's a fucking good player and I don't really buy that he's that limited, it's like the stuff people used to say about Carragher.

I heard a lot of weirdness about his 5 year deal at the time, made me very sceptical of his ability, but whatever happened I'm not arsed, he played well last night.

I think the only reservation I had - or have, maybe - about Flanno is that for a full-back he isn't the quickest. I think his passing and technique are underrated, and he's looking like he could be a very good defender. I'm not sure he'll get to Carragher's level, but then not many do.

Very promising though, and great to see him playing again.

And he tackles like a threshing machine. That's always fun to watch.

Typical contract blundering from LFC....?

The instantaneous round of applause from Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson said it all.
Raheem Sterling – Anfield's pantomime villain for the night – was knocked off his feet within 25 seconds of the opening whistle.

Perhaps the Centenary Stand should have roared a “he's behind you” to their former favourite.
Jon Flanagan had delivered the best early tackle in an Anfield game since Jamie Carragher welcomed Steven Piennar to the 2010 Derby with a now famous thunderous challenge inside 10 seconds.
Just like Carragher's, Flanagan's impact was clean, no foul.
As Klopp said later: “Flanno showed his opponent that maybe we were once friends...but not tonight.”
A typical performance of intelligence, poise and desire followed from the 23-year-old.
It wasn't perfect but when needed he was always there.
By half-time, Sterling was off, withdrawn by Manuel Pellegrini as an act of mercy thanks to constant stick from the crowd and little change out of his opposite number.
If Klopp had put Flanagan up against his former youth team colleague as a test – he could easily have deployed him on the left against the far less threatening Jesus Navas – he had surely passed with flying colours?

Verdict AnalysiTalking point

Late on - with Liverpool cruising 3-0 - the young full-back got a nasty slap in the face from a trailing Kolarov limb, an eye-watering straight arm which left him on the ground needing treatment.
Yet it is nothing to the ongoing slap in the face he's been getting from his own club for the last few months.
There is a time for business savvy, for a practical approach which watches the pennies and keeps the madness of football finance in check.
But Liverpool have had a good look at the fit-again Flanagan now.
If they were waiting for Jurgen Klopp to have a look, then he's had several opportunities too.
After fighting back from a succession of knee problems and more than 18 months on the sidelines, Jon Flanagan has shown he is ready to pick up exactly where he left off.
And that was playing full-back for most of a Premier League season which took Liverpool within a whisker of a title.
Yet his Reds contract is within a few months of running out with no new offer and no real talks.
It's a situation which you simply can't imagine happening with anyone other than a local lad.
Any young continental prospect showing similar traits would have been tied down months ago, protecting his value if nothing else.

You can only imagine that it is the player's own loyalty to the Liverpool cause which has led the club to be so apparently unconcerned about securing his signature.
It is ironic that the very things which can make Flanagan so important – his connection with the fans, his understanding of what it means to wear that red shirt - are making his future so uncertain.
Perhaps it's lucky Sterling left the scene so early or he could have been tempted to pass on some of the darker arts of contract negotiations. He knows a man, or something.
Liverpool of course supported Flanagan through his injuries but it was a modest 12-month contract extension he was granted last year.
Enough is enough now.
The absence of Flanagan from Liverpool's Europa League squad already looks like a significant error – his presence against Manchester United would surely have been a valuable one.
The club must make sure they do not make another and secure his presence at Anfield for several more years to come.

Love Flanno, and he can actually defend, unlike most of the 'defenders' in the squad. Not sure he'll offer enough to a modern team though as all modern teams love these fancy fucking fullbacks that spend most of their time attacking not defending. I'd have him and his sort in the team all day long though.
Unfortunately he'll be out of the games vs the scum and the dickhead will be back in as he wasn't registered 🙁

Trust the true form of 6CM, that when Flanno has a series of inevitable, poor performances - most, if not half of the posters in this thread will turn on him. Just watch. 96%
Well I'll be firmly with the 4%. The kid's a cracking defender and he's got more spirit and bottle about him than the rest of the fuckers put together.

There was a few times last night where he got himself into a spot of bother and either rescued the situation himself or kolo covered like a beast .

He can certainly defend and as everyone else has already pointed out , his desire , will and commitment are streets ahead of anyone else in the squad ,he has to be kept around purely for that reason. And that tackle on sterling was sublime in every sense , you could see the crowd and both sides felt it and the red half of each responded accordingly.

It was a a Gerrard/carra esque moment that we've seen far too frequently in recent years

To be honest, I'd forgotten quite how good he was and last night I was duly reminded. His tackling ability is up there with the best in the league. I didn't realise he wasn't in the Europa squad. I'm not sure what we were thinking there.

The issue Flanigan has is Clyne, who isn't much older, is more accomplished and looks to be going nowhere. He needs to learn the LB position this season and make himself adaptable to ensure he gets regular games for this football club.

He's an unreconstructed player from a bygone age. He's like the comic strip character in 'Billy's Boots' where Billy wears the boots of a fantastic striker from the days of yore and is able to play with his predecessor's striking talent– but instead, Flanno is wearing the boots of a murderous FB who hospitalised opponents.
he has Tommy Smith's boots

I didn't want Flanagan near team after an awful stint as a wing back away to Arsenal a few seasons ago. A few months later, he can back into the team and was a revelation. Absolutely love him. Watching Flanagan in a fun side show to our games. He's worth watching the games for alone.

Give him a new contract (he's due one soon isn't he?) and play him left back til the end of the season.

More than the tackle, this is why he deserves a new contract. With experience, he can be the new leader at the back.

Wasn't he the one that gave it away to create that chance for City?

One of the things Flanno does is get the crowd going and he set the tone for his teammates last night too. That has been the domain of Suarez and Gerrard and can't be underestimated. I'd stick him at left back from now on and give him a run in the side.

The least he deserves is a new deal. He's put in some really cracking performances over the years and I'd have him in the team ahead of Moreno any day of the week.
