Flanagan is the new Carra! Gerrard hails Kop kid after defender's first Mersey derby

Steven Gerrard has likened Jon Flanagan to recently-retired club great Jamie Carragher after singling out the youngster for special praise.

The 20-year-old started his first derby in an unfamiliar left-back position. But the local lad was Liverpool's stand-out performer in the weekend's thrilling 3-3 draw at Everton.

'Our star man for me was Jon Flanagan by a country mile,' said Gerrard, speaking to the Liverpool Echo.

'He doesn't get many headlines but as captain of the team he was the player I am most proud of. I thought he was unbelievable.

'He's been fighting hard in training just to get in the 18, never mind the starting 11, but the manager threw him in at the deep end against a top class player like Mirallas and I thought he was sensational.

'It was one of the best derby performances I have seen for many years.

'He reminds me of Carragher in a lot of ways.

'I don't think you would judge Jon in terms of ability or skill, but he is all about heart, desire, determination and fighting for the cause.

'He's a Liverpool fan like myself so I know what it meant to him to come into a derby and finish as our man of the match by a mile.

'He was on the front foot, he was aggressive. He did exactly what the manager told him to do before kick off. He was brilliant.

'He's a local lad and you don't need to tell them what the derby means. He's known what to expect from an early age.

Flanagan made his first Premier League start in the defeat by Arsenal earlier this month.

With Spanish full-back Jose Enrique out injured for a long-term spell, he will now look to make Liverpool's left-back position his own.

He's never been thought of as anything before this game, which he wouldn't have been playing in was it not for injury. That's just not true. He played 3-4 games in a row when he first broke through and looked decent. He then had a horror show against someone (Spurs?) and lost all form and confidence.

Totally disagree. Carra's first few games saw him struggle to establish himself, there was a lot of comment on the bullet boards / forums of the time that were critical and I was a season ticket holder back then. I remember a lot of heated discussions as to if he was good enough.

Well I'll apologise to Flanagan when he retires after playing 500 times for us, with a shed load of honours, and goes down as one of the best to play for us.

Carragher was already a first team regular when he was 20 , as well as a regular in the Under-21's for England. Flanagan is nowhere near that.

Blackburn away i think, he sold Doni short with a woeful back pass which led to Doni getting sent off and missing the Wembley semi v Everton.
