In both cases I'm sure I heard a little "u-umlaut" sound just before the "t". A lot of European languages pronounce "y" in that way. It comes from the Greek, where the letter originates.

Thinking about it JJ, I could well have framed the question, "do you pronounce it Kout or Kite?" Which would have left little room for more exact correction on their part.
