GIVEN his phenomenal goalscoring record since arriving at Anfield two years ago Fernando Torres' status as the darling of the Kop has been well and truly earned, writes Tony Barrett.

It isn't just the Spaniard's goals that mark him out for hero worship though, it is the way he has integrated himself into Liverpool the club and Liverpool the city pretty much from the moment he first got here.

His respect for the traditions of his club is apparent each and every time he gives interview, so much so that it is rare for Torres to speak about Liverpool without mentioning the fans who devote so much of their lives to support the team he is so proud to play for.

It is often said that Torres just "gets it", that he understands what it means to be a Kop star and what it means to represent the people of his adopted hometown and this was again clear following the birth of his daughter Nora.

In conversations with friends, Liverpool's number nine could not hide his delight at becoming a dad and one of the things that pleased him most was to father - "a baby Scouser".

Torres gets it alright, no question about that.

What a guy. And I was just thinking earlier, that if he stays relatively injury free this season, it will be his best yet. cannot wait to see him back in action.

Regardless of goat totals and what have you, I think Torres debut season will forever be his 'best season', simply because it was so special for Liverpool fans to have a proper striker once more, but it's based on more than just that; he broke the highest goal-scoring record for a foreigner in their first season, which was a remarkable feat in itself.

I have doubts over his hamstrings, but other than that he's the best striker in the world, IMO, and if he and Gerrard stay fit, we're favourites to win the league.

Does this little piece sort of take a dig at other player's who perhaps haven't come out and said anything lately?

I think its a post-lesson for those that have left and wondered why they were never truely adored despite being talented and winning the Balon D'Or

Players who have/haven't come out and said anything have the right to say summet or not say owt if they wish I moan about my job and its the same for them. Personally i think Xabi and javi have acted well seen as 2 spainish giants are in for them.

Call me oldfashioned, but I would prefer if they'd had the balls to actually come out and say what their real feelings were
