Basel is the centre of the European football world on Wednesday, with Liverpool and Sevilla fans descending on the city for the Europa League final this evening. Big European football matches usually mean a lot of beer drinking and Basel bars have insisted they're well prepared for the situation, and have ordered in more beer.
Speaking to Swiss newspaper Blick, regional politician Guy Morin explained that Basel will be able to cope, because they've held similar football events previously, with more fans attending. There's expected to be 65,000 supporters in Basel today, but in 2008 there were 100,000 followers of the Dutch national team for the European championships.
Just in case, more beer is being ordered.
Djawas Hakimi of the Braunen Mutz bar and restaurant told Blick they wouldn't run dry: "We always have beer! If we had no more beer there would be war."
Mr. Pickwick pub boss Mark Gauci Maistre added that he's ordered a lot of beer: "In addition to our normal stock of 9000 litres of beer we have additionally ordered 8,000 litres."
Papa Joe's, a bar where FC Basel celebrations have been held previously, are prepared to open through the night: "The whole staff was mobilised. Depending on how the mood is outside, we can stay here all night."
