Anzhi agree Eto'o deal

Anzhi Makhachkala have confirmed they have reached an agreement with Inter Milan to sign Samuel Eto'o, who will now head to Russia to undergo a medical.


Reports in Italy claim the deal is worth £21.8 million, with Cameroon striker Eto'o set to become the world's best-paid player on £17.9 million a season after tax.

Anzhi market consultant German Tkachenko told Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport: ''We chose Eto'o because he is a fantastic player. Now there are only small formalities, which will be resolved tomorrow (Wednesday).''

The statement from Anzhi continued: ''Anzhi expresses gratitude to the leadership of Inter Milan for their professional and constructive approach in the negotiations.

''Tomorrow the player will undergo a medical examination, following which the player will be awarded a three-year contract.

''On Thursday, Samuel will arrive at the location of his new team and will begin preparations for the match against FC Rostov.''

Tkachenko led a delegation from the Russian club who met with their Inter counterparts on Tuesday afternoon to thrash out the deal.

Eto'o scored 21 goals in 35 Serie A appearances for Inter last season, having helped Barcelona to Champions League glory in 2006 and 2009, scoring in the final victories over Arsenal and Manchester United.

The club has only had one full season back in the Russian top flight but has become a major player under an owner who who has poured money into the club.

In Forbes magazine's latest list of the world's richest people, his net worth was estimated at US$7.8 billion.

Despite the dangers in Dagestan, where a low-level Islamic insurgency has made the republic very unstable, Anzhi have already managed to attract players such as Roberto Carlos and Yuri Zhirkov.

Anzhi players live and train at a training camp outside Moscow for security reasons and travel to Makhachkala for home games, flying about 2,000 kilometers (1,250 miles) 15 times a season.

Crazy setup but if you pay crazy money then players won't mind .

Bundesliga is what it is because of its organization and traditions - things even big money can't buy. Russian league has paltry attendance figures and pervasive culture of corruption. Referees are routinely bought or intimidated or both. Just the other day, Anzhi coach with some bodyguards (or thugs) reportedly broke the door into the ref's dressing room at half-time of the game vs Dynamo Moscow. According to Dynamo players, after the ref's conversation with Anzhi officials at half-time, they were "blatantly killed" by the ref in the 2nd half, most notably with a bizarre disallowed goal.

I feel genuinely sorry that a world-class player like Eto'o is going to play in that shithole.

I feel sorry for the world of football for having lost a player like Eto'o. This is a player who scored winning goals in 2 CL finals and is still in his prime. Yes, it's his choice (although I hear it took quite a lot of persuading by his agents and inner circle people for him to agree to this), but it's a bad choice.

I feel sorry for Eto'o more, what a sad fucker. He's an immense talent who's pissed the last few years away and could easily continue playing at the highest level.
