Downing can stay ... but as full-back

If all it means is that Downing could play in that position if there's an injury/suspension crisis, then we know that already and it hardly merits a thread. If it means he could play there full time ahead of Enrique or Robinson, I don't dispute it but I also don't find it very appealing or, in the long-term, logical. That's all I'm saying.

If he's that high up he'd be in his 'proper' position anyway. It'd be like converting someone who works for Royal Mail and can't use a letter box into someone who works for DHL and can't use a letterbox.

Pretty much.

I doubt I'd like him there against top class opposition but at anfield against a lot of teams the full back will be doing pretty much what downing always does.

He's probably not going to be better than Enrique though is he? I mean, the whole thing is just damage limitation. Rather than him bring on the magic sponge or make the after-match sandwiches, let's try him at left back and put that 20M pounds to the back of our minds.

Why's it damage limitation? We've sacked the two people responsible for buying him and are looking to sell Carroll and Adam, two other purchases, so.... It's a bit late to trying to save face.

There's probably some politics to it, in that we can't pay off everyone on a wedge, but anyway.

I've got it ! Our new super improved back four meaning we can sell Agger to buy Neymar !

Johnson ...... Skrtel ...... Carroll .... Downing

We'd never concede a goal to a corner/header again and our new LB will never be out-paced.

"Stewart has a future as an attacking player but I have had a good chat with him on the role and he is excited about [playing at LB]." It's a sort of hamster wheel sentence, that. I think we'll have to wait for Rodgers to explain what he really sees happening in more detail

Even better:

Walcott...Skrtel...Carroll...Downing.

Johnny Rockets would have loved playing under Rodgers in that position.

I loved jar, but think he may not have been able to play his natural game under Rodgers. He did like to make long runs & take shots a little too often to work in this system I think.

He's lost every single 50-50 I've ever seen him attempt to "win" in the flesh, not particularly sound criteria for someone we're advocating playing at the back.

Let's take this to an extreme.

Downing - Adam - Carroll - Henderson

That's going to be ace. A back 4 made from all 4 of Kenny's attacking purchases. Didn't Rodgers say he likes to buy attackers and play them in defensive positions?

Whoo-hoo, let's get Suarez, another Kenny signing, in there as libero! (Oh god, I must apologise: Suarez did well, ergo, some on here have incontrovertible evidence that it was nothing to do with Kenny, unlike Carroll, who signed at the same time but isn't liked and therefore wasn't signed by the manger.)

He hoofed if too much for Rogers style.

So if Downing is successfully converted to a left back can we see that he's been "Rogered".

Or those 4 players were used in the mock example as they were shit signings.
Suarez was the best purchase in years for the club. Thus he can stay in attack.

Here is what I wrote back on June 3rd:

I am indeed proud. I think I was the first to suggest it here and at the time it felt so out-of-left field and improbable. Managers don't often convert established players to another position. Really proud I was able to predict it.

Congrats Rurik, that's impressive. I genuinely mean that.

From someone who's consistently ahead of the curve with things like this, I can appreciate it when others get the odd prediction right too.

Hmm, I guess I'm not the only one with penchant for self-congration 🙂. Thanks.

So Dalglish is (to borrow an Americanism) 1 and 7 then? Do you really want to do this?

Heh, if you're gonna go down this route full-on Rurik, then you can expect zero by the way of congratulations. In the last week I've nailed about 3 absolutely brilliant predictions. Really really good ones, including a fucking splendid eulogy that Luis Suarez repeated about nigh on word-for-word 5 days later.

And yet all I still get is "aye, Hayden Mullins you cunt."

I'm afraid people who point at things and say "look, this proves I'm brilliant", are generally treated as being cunts. Even if they are *actually* brilliant.

I know Mac. I'm fucking around here in case that wasn't obvious.

I *do* think Rurik's prediction was an impressive one mind.

I see. Thanks for the warning.
