It was a catch-all phrase I used to clarify what FSG's business model is in relation to football. Sabremetrics. Moneyball. Not spending enough to ever win the title.

The majority of our spending under FSG has been funded by the sale of our best players, last summer Sterling, before that Suarez.

I dunno man. Theres players selling around Europe now for 30m (like the kid from Benfica) who no one really knew a year ago.

Im honestly too old and cynical to think we can do it now. We COULD go and outspend everyone and buy Gotze, Griezman and the likes, but we wont.
My hope is that we sign good players and Jurgen can get a tune out of them.
I think replacing Mingolet is such a big step forward it will help, if this Matip is good as people think it will help. Beyond that, I dont know. Were in a league now where Stoke, Palace, West Ham etc can go and spend 150m on players this summer.
I dont mean of course I dont want us to sign the best of course I do, I just dont see it happening and even if we do its still a lottery. United have spent 300m to finish 5th Leicester and Spurs spent nothing and finished top 3.
I know im rambling. Truth is I have no expectations. I just hope our manager is better than their managers and we play some great football. I only watch US nowadays so I just want us to be good to watch.
If we are waiting for big name signings we're likely to be disappointed because Klopp is all about bringing in players who are little known and building them into big name players.
In fairness, that's generally been the Liverpool way too, we've often come unstuck when we've bought big so-called "proven" EPL players - eg Andy Carroll/Stuart Downing/Christian Benteke/Mario Balotelli
Traditionally, we as a club bought many second-liners, or guys who had not featured in English league (Keegan/Hypia/Henchoz/Clemence/Alonso/Suarez/Coutinho/Masher/Torres), but in recent years we've also bought some massively overpriced dross that we've been stuck with on grossly inflated wages.
I'm hoping (and thinking) that Klopp will bring greater due diligence to bring quality to our purchases and spend the money as if it's his own (which he did to such good effect at his last club.
I think the problem is less buying "proven" PL players than buying shit PL players. Carroll, Downing and Balotelli were never good enough. The prices we paid for them merely added insult to injury.

Klopp's recruitment policy was largely dictated by his budget. When he had available money, he wasn't afraid of spending "big". Mikhtaryan.
And Liverpool "traditionally" spent huge sums of money to buy the best available players in Britain; Dalglish, Rush, Beardsley, Alan Kennedy, Mark Lawrenson - all transfer record fees at the time.
I know there's a romantic notion about picking up gems from Partick Thistle and Home Farm - and we did that too - but let's not pretend we didn't wildly outspend almost everyone else when we needed to aswell.
How and where to recruit from is a very difficult 'science' and always has been. Personally I'd want to map out a style of play and then find out all I could about a persons experience, character and fitness to play to my style before approaching his club or agent. I'm sure Klopp has these things in his mode of working from his previous clubs.

Not necessarily, given the money Klopp will spend on known entities. Mkhitaryan, Ramos, Aubameyang, Reus, Sokratis, and Immobile were all sought after by top clubs.
Thats not true though. We've spent about 160 mill net since they took over. Maybe not enough to win the title but certainly enough to challenge for 3rd/4th.
