'FUCK OFF FUCK OFF FUCK OFF!!!' I love Mascherano the crazy little guy. For speed, power and aggression in the tackle is no contest.

I would be more afraid of Mascher running me down than Hamann. Hamann obviously the better footballer on the ball, and being in right place at right time.

Hamann smokes a pack of cigarettes and 10 pints of lager keeping one eye on the football and one eye on the horses.

But i wonder how good he would of been if he didnt do that? i guess hes lucky fast metabalism.

Id go for Mascherano, becausse i have a big soft spot for him. crazy guy.

I like Mascherano for all the reasons you have said, but trust me on this this is a no contest.
As you say right place right time, you don't have to make a tackle.
Didi was like Ronnie Whelan, in that too many people didn't realised how effective they were until they weren't there, because they did their job so effectively without bringing attention to themselves.
Unless you watched a lot of Didi it could be an easy mistake to make.

It is largely no contest IMO. I'd have to give it to Mascher in terms of mobility and aggression but that would be about it. Didi read the game as well as anyone - he and Sami were almost peerless in this respect. While many love Javier's passion - as do I - it must be said that his temperament has also cost us at times whereas Didi was the epitomy of cool. He defined his career in Istanbul and I doubt any other player in the world has had a more profound affect on a bigger match on a bigger stage.

Let Mascherano play out his career first before you start making comparisons.

The fact we are even having a discussion about whether Mascherano is good as Hamann at this stage of his career is enough to indicate that the lad is something special!

when it comes to mobility and aggression mash takes it. even didi's biggest fans wouldn't agree that point. I think the key point is would we be able to hold a high line, aggresively go after the ball when we don't have it and force the opposition into mistakes (as we currently do) with didi rather than mash? I was obvious rafa wanted to move in this direction, hence the reason rafa shipped out didi but held onto momo, but momo wasn't up to the task where is mash is perfect for the role. Mash is off form currently but when he is in top form he is a joy to watch, like his one man wreaking ball performance v chelsea (game just gone) before his fuck up.

I wouldn't swap didi for mash but I conceed didi definately reads the game better than mash does.

I'll tell you why Didi owns Mash like his crying bitch.

Didi is one of those rare players who has that valuable commodity to calm things down especially in tight situations. It's like time suddenly slows down when the ball's at his feet.

When in a panicky situation, notice he holds the ball well, draws a few opposition players to him, and then release a simple, short pass to diffuse the situation as if to say, 'pffttt...calm down lads, no biggie..you've all got didi...'

What's most important is that he enables the entire team to keep their shape especially when his team's put under intense pressure.

And of course, when all else fails, he does the patented 'Didi fall' as if someone's just hacked his legs off. Whistle blown, free-kick earned and if lucky, booking for the opposition, provides time for teammates to redress thoughts and regroup formation.

It's an art only perfected by the kaiser and a select few. Not many players have this unique talent of being able to calm play down and buy a few seconds advantage for their team's play.

It's also fast becoming an old skool art as the game's all bout pace, power and aggression these days. But the ones who have this skill, they usually stand out very clearly and are usually the world's top players.

Examples of those who have this sort of skill...
1) The one that stands out most - Zidane
2) Molby
3) Makelele
4) Dunga
5) Roy Keane
6) Alonso to a certain extent
7) John Barnes when he played in CM
8) Fernando Redondo

These players listed rarely give the ball away. That's what makes them special.

that was a strength of didi's to be sure but mash has strengths as well. it's easy to see why barca are after mash because his aggresive type all and action display would be idea for a team that want to press the opposition high up the pitch. with didi we'd gain calmness but lose mobility. it really is a pity xabi fucked off but we had both with both xabi and mash in the middle of the park.

Javier Vs Momo may have been a fairer comparison.

Please tell me that was sarcasm? The captain of Argentina, widely recognised as the best in that position for one of the top 3 international sides in the world v Sissoko?

Definitely a joke.

You know, my memory fades quickly and i never thought about this for a long time but this is exactly right and i remember now watching Didi and thinking this.

He was the perfect player in the tight situations on the edge of the box to slow things down, clear the danger, 'crumble' to win a free kick, control the game.

Hamann was probably underrated, by me at least, I'm a sucker for the all action style of defensive midfielder, its more exciting to watch. I loved Momo for this too, when he was good. But your Didis, Whealans and Fernando Redondos are your connoisseurs choice of Def Mid.
