There's no real agenda here at all. I'm simply asking the question because Javier seems to have one foot out the door and I'm delighted to say Didi's returned to help train our Under 16's.

Simple really, cut out all sentimentality and ask yourself who's the better defensive midfielder and why?

Didi is the better reader of the game, the better passer, has better technique and scored more goals.

Masch has more pace and aggression.

I voted the german.

I think that's a fair enough assessment, although Javier must also be credited for having more desire and athleticism... or not smoking, whichever.

I voted for Didi, too, manly because I think he could play pivotal role against any side we faced. I'm not sure that's true of Mascherano.

Didi had more in his locker, plus would chip in with the odd screamer.

Although, the fact that he used to take all the free kicks and land them mostly in the top corner of the stadium used to do my head in.

I agree actually although in a big game against strong opponents I think Masher is the better player where as Didi could be more effective against lesser opponentsa whilst being very effective against the big guns.

The kaiser every time. Mascher is more impressive in his aggression, but Didi's footballing intelligence more than made up for it.

houllier's signing was much better than rafa's. not sure who signed lucas, maybe it was parry.

Yeah right.

didi's all round game is better than mash' but mash allows us (or should allow us) to defend further up the pitch as he is much more mobile.

I think Mascher is the better defensive midfielder but Didi is the better midfielder... if that make sense!

i'd like to see masch next to gerrard in all honesty to be able to make a better comparison. didi was at his best towards the end of his career with us, masch is still young.

didi could shoot better though, i've yet to see a masch shot really trouble a keeper.

Are you serious or you're just doing this to wind up others?

I really don't see the point..

Rages moronic posts tends to do that to posters...

Didi also had an impressive "slowly fall on top the ball in dangerous positions in our own half getting free kicks every time", that he used frequently.

Dietmar was fantastic.

A top pro and a top bloke, the best kind of guy to have around the club. I'd have liked him to stay another season as a player and I'm chuffed to monkeys he's coming back as a coach.

The Didi at Anfield was significantly older and more experienced than Masher is now, bit of an unfair comparison (unless this is on what they've done for the club so far, which is a no brainer).

the question is who is the better defensive midfielder? It has to be Mascher,as his ability to break up play and protect the back four os phenomenal. If the question is who is a better player or all round midfielder, then it is hamman, whose contribution to the team overall was probably more significant than that of Mascher.

I dont care how you phrase the question, there shouldn't even be one in the first place.

Didi >>>> Mascherano

Better in terms of skill
Better in terms of personality
Better in terms of teamwork
Better in terms of facial expressions

Fcuk. This is a no contest !

'FUCK OFF FUCK OFF FUCK OFF!!!' I love Mascherano the crazy little guy. For speed, power and aggression in the tackle is no contest.

I would be more afraid of Mascher running me down than Hamann. Hamann obviously the better footballer on the ball, and being in right place at right time.

Hamann smokes a pack of cigarettes and 10 pints of lager keeping one eye on the football and one eye on the horses.

But i wonder how good he would of been if he didnt do that? i guess hes lucky fast metabalism.

Id go for Mascherano, becausse i have a big soft spot for him. crazy guy.

Well considering he was good enough to change the course of a Champions League Final, as well as being his Country's best player in a losing World Cup Final, I'm gonna say... Not much.

He was good in the WC final, but remember it was him who was pushed off the ball for the opening goal by fat Ronaldo.

Maybe he would not of been caught if he didnt smoke like a train and drink like a fish? But Im not judging him, i do too.

I like Mascherano for all the reasons you have said, but trust me on this this is a no contest.
As you say right place right time, you don't have to make a tackle.
Didi was like Ronnie Whelan, in that too many people didn't realised how effective they were until they weren't there, because they did their job so effectively without bringing attention to themselves.
Unless you watched a lot of Didi it could be an easy mistake to make.

I think his ability is quite obvious Vlad.

He is excellent at tight spaces. He reads the game really well, and his passing though in most part short and sideways, is much more purposeful than say, Lucas.. He directs the game very well.

He's a big game player. Almost always performs at the big stages. (v Barca where he was an absolute monster, and against Milan for example)

I don't know why I was using present tense then, but I meant in the past onviously.
