Defending Carra (formerly West Ham thread)

Focus on our streghts. Keep the ball, let them run in between and press them hard all over the pitch. if we win the ball back high up we will be fine. Biggest worry is Gerrard and the booking issue, as this might be a hard battle in midfield. I can't see them lie down as easily as Spurs.

HAHAHA!! Kolo is an absolute shit house! He has been a reasonable 4th choice but he would be the worse equipped to deal with Carroll.

Fuuuck Orrff. Talk about hyperbole.

Toure was brilliant for us early on (when played in his preferred position of RCB) and the only reason people have got on his back is because of the two awful/unlucky mistakes, both of which could be excused to some degree (and were by TV panels). However replacing Agger is not beneficial because Toure is just as poor as Agger when played at LCB. Toure has springs in his boots, he's a better header of the ball than Agger but not as good as Skirts and Sakho is easily the best.

It's good news if Collins is out for this game, he's one of the few defenders who's managed to contain Suarez in a game.

I'm referring to his strength/ aerial ability which is what he'd need to take on Carroll (which is what DB was saying he should come in for).

He has good positional sense and started the season making lots of Skrtel like blocks which will have saved us a few goals and I thought he was a good addition to the backline at that point. I don't think he is the defender we put out to combat an aggressive, strong and bullying centre forward though. He doesn't challenge for headers as often as he should and has often been caught ducking out of challenges which would not work well in this situation.

I want revenge for the way they cheated us to win the FA cup

We cheated them?! If I remember correctly, didn't we dominate that game and they got three goals against the run of play, including one ridiculous cross that turned into a shot?

Ball retention and defending high will be key in this game. We should be able to carve out enough chances for our forwards to score.

Big Sam is going to try to hurt us. Be ready for a physical and aerial bombardment. This game is going to be a war.

Big Sam is the Big Fear factor here. Afterall he had the capacity and skills to manage Real Madrid according to insiders!!

Konchesky's goal was ludicrous but no, we definitely didn't dominate the game. On the contrary, they outran us all afternoon, and at times Momo - who was my MOTM, wonder goals notwithstanding - was playing them on his own. It wasn't a miracle on the Istanbul scale, but it wasn't that far off.

If a team is good enough to win the league, they'll beat West Ham. And if Carroll is really as hopeless as some on here claim, then there's absolutely nothing to worry about. Next topic!

Carroll is far from hopeless in the right circs IMHO. However, this season's version of Martin Skrtel can handle him. I'd have been happier if a match-fit Sakho were in central defence alongside him, but I'm quietly confident all the same.

I'm confident that if we play our own game, we will win comfortably however if we are drawn into a scrappy and aggressive game I am worried we will struggle.

As Gary Neville said, you can see the squad is starting to believe ... They are a fairly close knit group of guys it seems, and the confidence that is oozing from them is unreal. If, as Briz, says - we play our game, we'll win. I'm actually happy to have read this morning that Carroll said this am that 'We're safe now' ... A team that feels it's 'achieved its goals' is far more easier to overcome than one that is fighting for their lives.

You definitely didn't watch the same FA Cup final I did. To even suggest its in the same league as Istanbul is preposterous, West Ham played very well, but we were the better team.

Milan were a far better team than W.Ham, but that's beside the point. The Hammers were as far ahead of us for the vast majority of the 2006 Cup Final as Milan were in Istanbul and there is no way on God's Earth that "we were the better team" that day. Let's agree to differ.

We were the better team but West Ham were up for it.
They scored three lucky goals. I mean one own goal, one howler by our keeper and one lucky cross. Momo was obviously the best player on the pitch.

Just look at Newcastle. Its the same thing every year. You drop off 5 % in this league and you lose nearly every game.

Exactly, to suggest they were cheated like that West Ham fan did was ridiculous, in fact I'd say we would have been the ones cheated if they won with those goals.

There talking about us not giving the ball back after they kicked it out just before Gerrards goal. But their player kicked it out as a ploy to waste time anyway!

The criticism and ridicule of Toure is as harsh as it gets, its crazy how a couple of bad mistakes can alter the whole perception of him.

Its to be expected from oppo fans and media/pundits as they won't watch us every game and will just remember the howlers but its a bit mad for any of our fans to write him off as no good or having a bad season, hes done a good job for us overall, its a pity those mistakes have changed the whole outlook on him, if you took those 2 clangers out he would get a lot of praise and the vast majority of us would be very contented with him and the job hes done this season.

To an extent. They were definitely the better team in the first half though. It also took a ridiculous goal from Gerrard to even force extra time and a wonder save from Reina in extra time to keep it level.

And why do people keep saying about some of us being scared and afraid of Andy Carroll?

Its just recognising and respecting their main threat, you must be seriously ignorant to just ignore that, Carroll is the best player in the league in the air and West Ham will play to that strengh, we all know what he can do when hes on it, he was a match winner for them only last night.

We have an 18 million quid French international whos ready to go sitting on the bench, out of all the games this is the game to bring him in as he is our best defender in the air, Aggers main weakness is in the air, when i think about it based on what we have seen this season im not sure there is anything Agger is better at than Sakho.

Don't buy the excuse of him having not played so its dodgy to bring him in either, every player has to be put in at some point after a spell out of the side.

Whatever happens hopefully none of this will matter and we dish out another stomping but as mentioned above i think this game could turn out to be a right old scrap.

But Sakho has no weaknesses?

Agger might not be strong in the air, but he offers us some calm in the back line and helps us keep possession.
