David Silva - the new Luis Garcia? Minus the goals

Bravo old man. Bravo.

£25m for a player who can play"attacking midfield" or behind the lone striker, but isn't a traditional winger

Who is, like Garcia, diminutive and not very pacey.
Who, unlike Garcia, doesn't really score many goals.

8, 7 and 6 in his last three seasons.

And this is a player Benitez wants to spend £25m on?

Jesus Christ.

Off topic, what were your thoughts on Jari Litmanen?
I don't have any. He did nothing at Liverpool

only a stupid cunt would post something like that

Please expound, Headwand.

I don't think we would have to pay £25m for him. Hes not in my preferences but he is a talented player.

If Silva is not the silver bullet for goals, then it would be better to retain Reira then?

Are goals really the problem with this Liverpool side?

And even if they were, the last time Benitez spent heavy money on a Spaniard with a less than impressive goal tally it worked out alright... For what it's worth, I honestly think Silva has the ability to score more - he's a naturally dangerous player.

The price is excessive though and the Luis Garcia comparison is valid (who was bought for £6M..) For £25M it would be preferable to land someone more established with a proven goal-scoring record, the problem is, who?

Have you seen him play before Brendan? He's a very good player, he's skillful and creative and is a first team member of the European Champions, he must be quite something to be there?

I share the opinion of Squiggles and a few other posters that theres alot more goals in him than he's showing at Valencia, he's a dangerous player and would fit wonderfully well into our side. For £20million i'd be estatic if we brought him.

Out of curiousity has there been a particular news story linking us to him today what has provoked this thread? It's been quiet on the Silva front the last few days.

Yep. If he signs for us, i'll be happy to be proved wrong, but I think this guy flatters to deceive. He's got a few great touches and can control a ball very well, but that's about it (nothing else that really stands out). No great strength, no great speed, just physically not suited to this league. Moreover, people see a player like him and think he's "creative" because he always looks like a player who has time on the ball to pick a pass. Well, newsflash lads, he won't have that time on the ball here in England. He'll be hustled and harried out of games.

This is my personal speculative bollocks, but i think a lot fans want him simply because of a lack of genuine top wingers elsewhere. Spending money just for the sake of it. Never mind the fact that we need a pacey, dribbling, direct winger to balance out the industry of Kuyt on the right. Never mind the fact that Silva, albeit left footed, prefers playing behind the striker or on the right of midfield (cutting in) where 2 of our "main men" hold that position.
We should sign him because, well, he's got a great sounding name that just seems to roll off the tongue. Ask a liverpool fan who we should sign and they'll tell you "I'll have Dáv-vid Sil-vaa", mind you, most of them have barely seen him play and must think he's the next "Dáv-vid Gin-nole-laa".

Anyway, to surmise, I wasn't overly impressed with him in an impressive Euro-winning Spanish side. Fabregas, Iniesta, Xavi, Senna took all the plaudits (in midfield) for me. And I haven't been impressed on the few occasions i've seen Valencia. A good player, not suited to what we require, and definitely not in the 20-25m range.

I agree with all of that.

Well done.

Has he said that he prefers playing on the right?
That was part of my speculative bollocks because he hasn't actually come out and said that, but most players will just say they "don't mind wherever they play, so long as they're playing". I presume he's best coming in off the right because whenever i've seen him for club and country, it's been mainly behind the striker or often drifting in from the right. Out of the 2 sides, perhaps that's not his "preferred" side (i've never asked him), but that's where he's made his name and recent managers seem to think he's best deployed.

A bit like Pires, he can obviously play on the other side because of his stronger foot, but he may not be half as effective.

Same could be said about the target of many people wank-fest, Tevez. Not worth the money, and not always looked that impressive.

Btw, has anyone actually watched him much this season at club level and not just judging him on internationals? As Torres doesn't always look magnificent like he does for us, at international level....

That's my take on him as well.

I've always like what i've seen when i've watched him play, which admittedly is only 3 or 4 times, however his youtube videos aren't all that, this must be a worry.

I don't care if this comes back to bite me in the ass, but I will be thorougly underwhelmed if we sign him.

There's only one true really reliable way of deciding whether Silva is good enough or not for us. Can some geek kindly fire up their copy of Championship Manager and tell us all if he's any good or not ?

The worrying thing is, his stats are off the chart on that. I always try and sign him lol

I've said before, I think he's lighweight and needs too much time on the ball. If he's the only signing we make this summer, I won't be overly excited.

Can I just ask the posters who think Silva is a bit meh, who would you sign? That can play anywhere across the attacking line, a natural winger and has potential to be a superstar. Who?

We're running out of players in professional football at this rate. Everyone is apperantly shite or mediocre.

Agreed.

Give me Robben any day over Silva.

Seriously, at £20million, I'd rather go for Ashley Young. At least we know he can cut it in the Premiership.

Ashley Young is so overrated on here. He's above average, nothing more. His final ball is bollocks.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

When was the last time he had a good game ?

Robben would be a horrid signing. Injury prone, old (i know he's only 25 but he looks 39) and for non footballing reasons i'd hate to see him here.

David Silva is 23 and i believe could become quite some player, especially alongside Torres and Gerrard, i think these three would really hit it off.

Eh, I'd rather go with Silva than Robben.

For the record, I don't think Silva is a bad player. I rate him to play in La Liga. I just think he'll struggle in the premiership as he won't be able to play to his strengths. And it's the ridiculous price tags that I object to more than anything.
