Ashley Young is so overrated on here. He's above average, nothing more. His final ball is bollocks.
So true that.

Agreed.

Give me Robben any day over Silva.
I like Robben as a talent. Exactly the type of player we need. In fact, I'd even be willing to overlook his Chelsea cnutishness. I;ve pushed his name forward in the past. But it always comes back to one thing.. what I can't overlook.. his injury record. It's appalling. He only plays 20-5 games a year.

A fit Robben-type of player would be ideal.

Let's spend all our dosh on him.

Fuck any other players.

His club's chairman said the asking price is €100m

Genuinely, a great player. But we've missed that boat. They're talking about 100m+ for him. Ridiculous.

Whenever I've seen Silva play, he's played on the left or behind the striker in a free role. How often has he played on the right?

As for Ashley Young, I've not seen much of him I admit, but when I have, perhaps the only thing that has impressed me has been his final ball. Odd.

Ashley Young is highly rated because

a) He's young and therefore
[ i]if you spend a large amount on him you've got a decent chance at making a good return
[ii] He's likely to improve.

b) He's shown he can cut it in the Premiership

c) He gets tons of assists

d) He's a pacy and direct winger; just what we need.

I'm sure we can negotiate.

Come on Rafa, you know you want him here.

have you watched Villa at all for the last 3/4 months when they failed to win a game?

Ashley showed some good things in the earlier part of the season but hasn't really helped Villa win a game for over 4+ months, so to be suddenly worth £20m and touted as the answer at Liverpool is laughable. Silva is a much better bet

Ashley Young. 7 goals , 7 assists.
Dirk Kuyt 12 goals 8 assists.

"He's young and will improve". Ahem, Lucas and Babel.

There's better out there than Ashley Young and he wouldn't substantially improve our team. I'd take Silva any day over him.

Villa's form has been terrible the last few months, and no Ashley Young unfortuntely wasn't able to drag them out of him. He had a run of bad form along with the rest of his team. But he's shown he's got the ability to be every effective in the PL, like we show last season and earlier on this season.

Unlike Babel and Lucas, Young has shown he is capable of being effective in the league over significant periods of time.

the other thing is that Silva plays for the best team in the world in terms of Spain and Ash Young can't even get a look in at England over non specialist left wingers like Gerrard and Rooney

My point is there are no guarantees as to whether young players will improve or not. As for being effective in the league over significant periods of time - no he hasn't. You've said before he had a run of bad form. What's a "significant period of time". I'd be wanting a player to perform all season long otherwise we may as well stick with lazy arse Riera.
At Celta Vigo, he was definitely a left winger, no question.

But at Valencia he's mainly played behind the striker, and then after that, the times i've seen him, it's been coming in off the right. Perhaps that's just on the odd occasion, but even with some of the reports i've seen, it's said he's been playing from right wing recently..

Not much of a source, but hey..

http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/footb...w-about-the-liverpool-target-115875-21353311/

"10) He’s primarily an attacking midfielder, but can play anywhere across the middle and also as a second striker in the hole. David spent most of last season playing on the right wing for Valencia and is regarded as one of the brightest talents in Spanish football."

http://www.davidsilva.azplayers.com/biography.html

"Silva is highly versatile, capable of playing as a left winger, playmaker, and recently has been played in Valencia as a right winger."

Now, whilst it's clear, he can play from the left wing (as he did at Celta), more recently, whenever i've seen him it's been, as you say, in a free role behind the striker and/or drifting in from the right.

Maybe that is a recent thing then - is Joaquin injured?
Well he's only played 25 games this year, so I presume he's been out for long periods and Silva has covered for him.

Conversely, Mata has played 38 games (with Vicente 23game), so again, I presume they've been tussling for the left wing spot.

Silva's a cracking little player at the right age to improve at Anfield. He's got that creative spark, can ghost past players with ease and uses his slight frame well in tight spaces.

An all round quality player who would improve our left side markedly, can cover for Gerrard when he's out and is one of the better players in the best Intl team in world football. Moreover, with Valencia in financial turmoil we'd get him for a very reasonable price (18m ish)

I'd be over the moon if we sign him.

I liked ibromurphs post but i think he underestimate Silva quite a lot, for Valencia he has been a highlight and is a very good little player, obviously whether he would prosper in the premiership is debatable but then you could say that about nearly any signing from abroad.

Even shit players cost 15M nowadays, his value is about right.

I concur Bud, I think he is a superb player and will improve us signficantly. His ability to keep possession in tight circumstances and his ability to create space in the final third of the pitch would be invaluable.

£25m for a player who can play"attacking midfield" or behind the lone striker, but isn't a traditional winger

Who is, like Garcia, diminutive and not very pacey.
Who, unlike Garcia, doesn't really score many goals.

8, 7 and 6 in his last three seasons.

And this is a player Benitez wants to spend £25m on?

Jesus Christ.
Where to start?

Silva is nothing like Garcia. The whole point about Lil Luis was that he was a maverick player - unpredictable, inconsistent, capable of creating goals out of nothing, but also guilty of giving the ball away much too cheaply. Silva is much more of a team player - less mercurial perhaps, but his control and passing are of a much higher standard than Garcia's. He's quick rather than fast, but above all he's quick-thinking - he'd be at his best in a high-quality, high-speed passing team like Spain or Barca... or like the Liverpool team we watched in the final third of last season.

8, 7 and 6 goals is not bad for an attacking midfielder, but it could be better, I agree. It might be a worrying statistic, but then Torres had an average of about 14 goals per season playing as a lone striker for Atletico - and look at his record here. FWIW, Iniesta - who EVERYONE thinks is fantastic and plays a similar role in a similar style - has scored a total of 20 goals in 181 matches for Barcelona.

He's at Valencia, who are in a position where they have to sell their best players, and he is friends with about half our team, meaning there's a good chance he might prefer to come here than any other club. The chances are, if we sign him, we'll be getting him for less than his true market value (which was also the case with Torres). I read that we offered a take-it-or-leave-it deal of £15m for Silva, and general press speculation has been in the £18-20m range - so where do you get your figure of £25m from?

Apart from all that, spot on.

How many diminutive, slow, physically unimposing attacking midfielders/ wingers have come to this league from abroad and thrived?

At a stretch, Nasri, Benayoun, Garcia, Pienaar.

Obviously if we are going to pay 25m for Silva to achieve what the abovementioned have achieved then if will be a terrible waste of money.

Can I just ask the posters who think Silva is a bit meh, who would you sign? That can play anywhere across the attacking line, a natural winger and has potential to be a superstar. Who?

We're running out of players in professional football at this rate. Everyone is apperantly shite or mediocre.
He plays for Bayern and I've not been more convinced that a foreign player would be a success. He could be a superstar here.
