Danny Ings - Confirmed

Meh, average at best I reckon. Hardly fills me with confidence on our summer recruitment drive, oh scrap that, zero confidence as we have rogers and that committee in charge.

Maybe, in a day and age when the top clubs hoover up all the potential talent from an early age, there's a reason he's been stuck in the lower divisions? It used to happen thirty years ago, but there aren't many players now who spend a lot of their career in the lower divisions and seamlessly go on to be top players for a club with top level ambitions.

If he signs, I'll give him all the time I afford to other signings and really get behind him and hope he does well. But I'll be surprised if we're not bemoaning our lack of striking options again next season.
That's a bit unfair. Ings is still very young - 92 born, same age as Coutinho. Talent needn't show itself at age 16. Some people develop a bit later. I think you can hardly hold against a 22 year old coming through the academy of a Championship side the fact that he hasn't been poached by a Prem club yet. He's had 2 years of first team football with his side, and performed admirably. He is now rightly getting the move to a bigger club. Whether he's good enough for us, we'll find out, but I think he deserves a fair assessment of where he stands today. He isn't some midtable journeyman like Dempsey or a big fish in a small pond like Charlie Adam. He's actually a reasonably talented youngster.

Oh I think he's alright like. A premiership footballer perhaps, but a mid to lower half one. Certainly not one for hopes of top 4 and titles. If he was, he wouldn't be at Burnley and Bournemouth or whoever it was

The part in bold is correct. There are 6 strikers currently in top 4 sides in the league who were still playing lower division football, kicking around in a tier 2 European league, or at a less glamorous first division club at around the same age:

- Giroud was 24 and Drogba was 25 before they made their moves to Ligue 1; Giroud's career before 24 was like a tour of the French lower divisions
- Dzeko moved to Wolfsburg from an obscure club in the Czech league at 21
- Bony was knocking around at Sparta Prague, then Vitesse in the Dutch league, from 20 to 24
- Costa was playing at Albacete at 21, in the Segunda Division, and then Valladolid at 22 in the La Liga; rejoined Atletico Madrid, played a season there, and was sent out on loan to Rayo Vallecano
- Remy wasn't from the lower division roots, but he was with Nice at 20-22 - they finished 9th and 15th in the 2 seasons he was there

It's interesting to see that Remy aside, the strikers above are of the strong, physical variety with decent pace, quickness and technical ability. Maybe it's a coincidence, or maybe clubs tend to favour kids with blistering pace when they're coming through so these types get overlooked.

Good point, but I don't think it's a coincidence that none of these are English. English clubs, it seems, more than elsewhere in Europe battle desperately to get all the talented kids at an early age. That's why we rarely see young stars coming through at clubs other than the top clubs. Joe Hart was probably the last player to do so.

I'm looking at Danny Ings' record here, too, and it's not very good. I thought he had banged them in for a couple of years in the championship. Basically, he has had one good season there and a half decent season in the prem. So a lot like Andy Carroll.

Well the bit where he doesn't cost £35m is a bit more reassuring at least.

Yeah... but it's still signing someone who doesn't improve our first team.

That's a bit of a stretch isn't it? Last year all our strikers were fucking shit. He's a bit better than that.

Not that I think that our bar should be set at 'not fucking shit' - but that would have got you 38 starts this season up front for us.

Assuming Sturridge happens to stay fit for longer than five minutes, Ings wouldn't get in the side. He'll only get games in lower priority fixtures and the last 15 minutes. If he is a starter for us our strikeforce is still log.

I first noticed Ings predatory instinct about 4 years ago when he was at Bournemouth and was very impressed. I followed his career from there and, despite what the "hard" statistics say, he has been prolific in my eyes throughout.

Obviously. given his stats, I need to qualify that assertion...................He became prolific for Bournemouth as soon as he became a regular starter. He then went to Burnley and was injured for about 8 or 9 months almost immediately. It's doubtful he would have got straight into the team anyway as Charlie Austin was knocking in goals for fun for them and ably assisted by Vokes.

Eddie Howe had been Bournemouth's manager when Ings broke into the team and when he left to take over at Burnley he took Ings with him (a few months later). I am quite sure that Howe did not plan on pairing Austin and Ings but bought Ings because he knew that bigger clubs would move in for Austin.

Most of Ings appearance/goals during the 2012/13 season were as sub and, as I alluded to previously, he was feeling his way after a long injury.

When Austin signed for QPR for £8m the Burnley fans were devastated but Danny Ings filled the void. As soon as Ings became a regular feature in the Burnley line up he started scoring.

I remain quite convinced that he will score lots of goals for us if he signs but even if he does not prove as successful as I anticipate I am 100% convinced that he will prove better back-up than Balotelli/Lambert/Borini.

It will be a cheap name to have on a shirt. One letter more than Ibe or Can. Several fewer than Coutinho, Sturridge or Henderson. I hope this helps.
I found out getting N'Gog on my shirt was the same price as Mascherano. They don't charge per letter unfortunately.

To be honest.... I think I'd stand a good chance of scoring more premier league goals for Liverpool next season than Borini, Balotelli & Lambert combined have this season and I'd cost even less than Ings.

Pesam has been talking highly of Ings for years on here, and its great that we could be on the verge of signing him. Proof that the club follows what our own lower league scout says.

'Bout time they started paying me a retainer fee 🙂

the way to improve squad is by signing players that will improve our first team then getting some competition going, whats the point of buying players to improve our squad depth when they're average when they do play? They're just making up the fucking numbers

We're losing Gerrard & Glenjo; almost certainly losing (IMO) Sterling, Jones, Lucas, Enrique, Balotelli and Borini, possibly losing Lambert and Toure and god knows how long Flanagan and Sturridge will be out for. If we can get a few "bargains" like Ings, Milner, Boruc etc it means we can spend the vast bulk of the budget (maybe £100m.....based on £50m for Sterling, £25m for rest and £25m from FSG) on getting 3 or 4 top quality signings. If we need to bring in 8 players to replace the 10 (or so) that are leaving then ideally we spend £85m buying 3 really decent players (e.g. Isco, Pranjic, Carvalho) and £15m on the other 5.....e.g Ings, Milner, Boruc etc.

On the face of things it seems like a good idea to sign him - low fee, low wages, good age and will be very much in demand (for a profit) if it doesn't work out.

It's nothing we can really get excited about but when you reflect on the sort of dreadful signings we've been making in recent years, you can't really be too critical about this one.

Liverpool told to sign QPR's Charlie Austin AND beat Man Utd to Danny Ings this summer

HARRY REDKNAPP has urged Liverpool to sign Charlie Austin and Danny Ings next season.

Redknapp worked with Austin earlier in the season at QPR before stepping down as manager for health reasons.
But he has backed his former charge to score at least 15 goals if he moved to Anfield next term.
Liverpool's problems up front have been well-documented this season.
They're talking about Liverpool taking him, if they do I'd like to have bet he gets between 15 and 20 goals next year.

And with Daniel Sturridge set to remain sidelined until September with a hip injury, Redknapp believes that Brendan Rodgers should also look to add Danny Ings on a freetransfer from Burnley.
He said: "Charlie's had an excellent season.
"He'll score goals anywhere, he's proved that this season, and wherever he has been he's always scored. I wouldn't see that changing with him.
"If he doesn't stay at QPR then I'm sure someone will take him. He's a great finisher, he's hungry and he works hard.

Harry Redknapp has backed Charlie Austin to succeed at Liverpool
"Like the boy, Ings, at Burnley, he'll score wherever he goes.
"They're talking about Liverpool taking him, if they do I'd like to have bet he gets between 15 and 20 goals next year.
"I think he would in the right team, in a team like Liverpool who create loads of chances, I think Ings would score lots of goals there."

But how often have we said that? "Player x looks like a decent signing as a budget backup to go with our shiny new world class player", season comes around and we dont have a shiny new world class player we have someone that should be playing FA cup games playing constantly and being shit

No i would stay well clear of Austin. This kindo of signing is not worth doing at 15mil plus....this is like all those times we almost signed Bent....Hopefully its the same case with Austin.

I would bring Ings because he is on the cheap and with him Sturridge and the Belgian kid and Ibe we are unlikely to have as woeful a season when it comes to goals contributed by forwards.

Anyway what we are going to clearly miss is a talisman like Suarez, Torres or Gerrard...we must quickly unearth that player, dont care what position he plays in....we need someone who can make it all happen out there....we are lost as it is.
