Danny Ings - Confirmed

The dream team - Aspas, Lambert & Ings up front.

Dempsey & Siggurdson in behind.

Edit: Rodgers Dream XI

-----------------Aspas---------Lambert-----------
----------Sigurdsson--------------Dempsey------
Konyplanka-------Welsh Xavi-------------Salah
-------Lovren-----Papadopolous----Llori--------
----------------------Mignolet------------------------

I like Konyplanka. Has he lost some brain cells since we were last interested and adjusted his surname accordingly?

If the 'reports' are correct and he has chosen us then that's good. A player that wants to play for us is a bonus.

What a daft comment. Chelsea had drogba and remi for a lot of the season with Costa injured.

It's not all about Ronaldo and messi fantasy footy.
Remy is better than Ings so I don't get your point. Drogba was a gamble which didn't pay off but he won't be there next season. Fact is our strike force is shit and getting Ings isn't going to change that. We can't rely on sturridge so we need someone who will strike fear in defenders and bang 20 goals. Ings isn't that person.

From the owners point of view I'd hope they are looking at Ings & Origi as relatively low cost strikers who they anticipate being part of the team for many years to come, and therefore offset that against a more experienced striker who might only be around for 2 or 3. I've no idea who that might be but i'm as always optimistic.

Ok... I guess he can't be worse or contribute much less than Balotelli, Lambert or Borini, but the only possible way this makes sense - is we're getting rid of those 3 and we are spending top dollar on another high class striker.

Signings like these are not going to help us challenge for top 4. Just keep us right where we are. Average signing. Replacing like for like.

Actually, yes they are. Because instead of Lambert & Borini as strikers #3&4 we'll likely have Ings and Origi, so when there is a need to call on them, or rest Studge or whoever the other new striker is (assuming there is one), they can start in the LC, EL or early FAC matches as well as proving reliable substitutions in the PL.

Origi has 11 goals in all matches (Lille & Belgium) so far this season. Ings 10.

I can go through the archives but im fairly certain that a sizeable number of usual suspects were not convinced Suarez was a star when we signed him....he was not enough to replace Torres... As fans we tend to debate mainly on the basis of hindsight.....

Im in no way suggesting that this is another Suarez, but when it came to signing promising players from lower down the league this is exactly the sort of signing i wanted us to make...not buy half of Southampton for 50 million.

Good player on the rise and at a seemingly bargain rate.

True, but we rarely have two of them. Last season we did, and we did really well, the last time we did before that was probably 2001?

Hmmm, you're not really tackling the real issue though. I can use exactly your rationale for why Ings will be a good 3rd choice signing this season as why Borini was a good signing back in 2012 - when lest we forget, he'd scored 10 in 26 in arguably the most defensively minded of the top leagues. Why is Ings going to work out differently from Borini? Nothing says he is made to be a reliable substitute anymore than Borini has proven to be...

If anything he has less flexibility in position than Borini so is going to get less games to prove himself...

Exactly. And the same numpties that are moaning about this (probable) signing would be moaning if United had signed him saying "why didn't we make a move, FFS for £3m-£5m it has to be worth the risk".

Ings is definitely a no risk signing. 3 million is nothing as we'd recoup that easily if we sold him after a season. His wages won't be lavish either.

It's relatively low risk, given the age and price. It's a much more sensible buy than Lambert was, but I doubt he'll really make that much difference to us next season.

I'm waiting to see who else we get this summer, I'm not going to get too excited over this.

It will be a cheap name to have on a shirt. One letter more than Ibe or Can. Several fewer than Coutinho, Sturridge or Henderson. I hope this helps.

People said exactly these things to justify signing Lambert and Borini. I fear it's more of the same and we haven't learnt.

Ings has had to prove himself the hard way by coming through the lower divisions. Borini reckons he belongs at a top club and has nothing to prove. They are entirely different, Ings deserves a bit more respect than to be compared to that deluded excuse of a striker.

Maybe, in a day and age when the top clubs hoover up all the potential talent from an early age, there's a reason he's been stuck in the lower divisions? It used to happen thirty years ago, but there aren't many players now who spend a lot of their career in the lower divisions and seamlessly go on to be top players for a club with top level ambitions.

If he signs, I'll give him all the time I afford to other signings and really get behind him and hope he does well. But I'll be surprised if we're not bemoaning our lack of striking options again next season.

I think he'll be all right. But "all right" has got us where we are now.

As long as he puts in more effort than Balotelli or Sturridge did, which is pretty much guaranteed, then he will improve the team simply by giving more of the ball to Coutinho and Sterling.
