Danny Fucking Ings

Chelsea 05-06.

Drogba 12 goals

Is that the only one? I'm not arguing that a 20+ striker guarantees the title, we've had a few of those ourselves to disprove that. And there's always Kevin Phillips. But as a general rule, the Champions usually have one big scorer. I assume that season Lampard got quite a few.

Well, I don't know. Name me one Title-wiining side that didn't have a striker in it who didn't score 20 goals plus.If your front three only score 10 goals each, you can't win the league.

2013-2014 we had Suarez and Sturridge with > 20 goals whereas City won the league with Aguero 17 goals as top scorer. Apologies in advance for invoking painful memories.

Probably better to name all the title-winning teams that did have a striker in it who scored 20 goals plus.

For the Premier League, 13 of the last 23 champions have had a 20-goal scorer (not always a striker, see Chelsea and Lampard). A few top scorers have come really close though (e.g. Cantona, Solskjaer, Yorke, Ronaldo with 18).

92/93 Man Utd - Mark Hughes (15)
93/94 Man Utd - Cantona (18)
94/95 Blackburn - Shearer (34) **
95/96 Man Utd - Cantona (19)
96/97 Man Utd - Solskjaer (18)
97/98 Arsenal - Bergkamp (16)
98/99 Man Utd - Yorke (18)
99/00 Man Utd - Yorke (20) **
00/01 Man Utd - Sheringham (15)
01/02 Arsenal - Henry (24) **
02/03 Man Utd - Van Nistelrooy (25) **
03/04 Arsenal - Henry (30) **
04/05 Chelsea - Lampard (13)
05/06 Chelsea - Lampard (20) **
06/07 Man Utd - Ronaldo (17)
07/08 Man Utd - Ronaldo (31) **
08/09 Man Utd - Ronaldo (18)
09/10 Chelsea - Drogba (29) **
10/11 Man Utd - Berbatov (20) **
11/12 Man City - Aguero (23) **
12/13 Man Utd - Van Persie (26) **
13/14 Man City - Toure (20) **
14/15 Chelsea - Costa (20) **

I have a feeling most of those sides will have had a front 2 or 3 that scored a fair bit more than 30 goals a season though, which would have been a better argument.

So the point stands really, most title winners have a player who is at least capable of 20 goals a season. Most prolific goalscorers average in their peak years 15-20 goals I reckon, you need reliable goalscorers to win the league or a shit load of goals spread across the team, like the Drogba example (I think Chelsea's defense got around 15 goals that season).

Anyway, I think Ings will do quite well, he looks capable of getting goals and even if his average is somewhere around the same as Kuyt's contribution, then aslong as we get the attack sorted, he'll be a good option. He did well earlier in the season and looked a but above Benteke and Origi. The latter has pushed on since then, so hopefully we've got two hungry players there with big potential.

Those who know more about Ings - can he play wide in a fluid front 3? Or is he more of a strictly central player?

Also, what is his strong foot?

Not actually 100% true, though rare. I actually had a thread / post on this a year or so back and there was at least one. Basically title winning teams fall into one of two categories a) prolific striker + a couple of others hitting 10-15 or b) 4-5 players each scoring 12-15 or so. I can't say though whether the 'top' striker(s) in those teams failed to score more due to injury restricting the number of their starts.

Edit : not as rare as I remembered - thanks Pigeon !

Thats crazy talk
Statistics show that 100% of teams which concede more goals than they score don't win the league 75% of the time.

I think they may have used the wrong statistical test during their work.

I can't claim to have any great knowledge of him but to me he would seem to be an out and out striker who would benefit from a strike partner.

Definitely central JR. When Burnley first signed him they had Charlie Austin and Sam Vokes up front so to give the 20 year old some game time they sometimes squeezed him into the team as a No.10 type behind either Vokes or Austin, or as part of a front 3 but with Austin as the central character.

That was the season that manwithnoname alluded to earlier in which Ings only scored 3 goals.

A few Burnley fans I know were devastated when Austin left and didn't believe me when I told them that Ings would be a great replacement (I knew this because I'd seen him play for Bournemouth in the 1st division and knew he had to play centrally). Needless to say Ings became a goal machine as soon as the moved him centrally.

To answer your other question....he's right-footed although has a decent left too.

Quite. I meant it would be a slightly less big a waste of time compiling the list. It's all dealing with the bleedin' obvious.

While we're on the subject of the bleedin obvious, I quite like having a striker who scores loads of goals. They're more enjoyable than the ones who don't score loads of goals.

Looking at that list of top scorers in title-winning teams, I can't help thinking that professional footballers are shit at their jobs.

Even in the days when brain surgery was considered more impressive than rocket science, it was regarded as pretty obvious that the best two things a manager could do to start shaping a potentially title-winning team was to buy a top class keeper and a top class striker. We were unusual in the sense that we tended to nurture young players into being top class, such as Clemence and Keegan, but the likes of Clough certainly highlighted that template. It's a sad fact, given how many millions we've wasted over the past few years on 'he can do a bit of this and a bit of that' midfielders, that we've never really grasped this idea. It's still what we need, amongst other things, now.

Didn't Mista get a fair few that season?

I do remember Vicente being an absolute machine on the left wing that year though, I think he scored 15 or something.

I think Ruben Baraja was nearly their top goal scorer when they won a title.
