Cascarino: New signing shows Liverpool "have lowered their sights"

Former Republic of Ireland international Tony Cascarino believes Liverpool’s imminent capture of Fulham left-back Paul Konchesky illustrates how far their stock in English football has fallen, because the 29-year-old is not good enough for any of the Premier League’s top four clubs.

Liverpool are expected to complete the signing of the Fulham defender prior to today’s 6pm deadline and although Cascarino suggests the fullback is a “solid performerâ€, the player would not get into any of last season’s top four clubs.

Speaking to the Times, Cascarino suggested Konchesky was the ‘Signing of the week’, saying: “Not because he’s a great player but because of what Liverpool buying him represents.

“The left back is a good, solid performer who will help solve a problem position for the club but he’s not someone the other top four contenders would ever have considered buying.

“He’s not Champions League quality. How Liverpoolhave lowered their sights.â€

Yeah but we can't all pay £6M for litterally unknown chubby Portuguese players no-one's ever heard of.

Awful article.

No we cant. But we can use our funds way smarter than we have done. We have splashed BIG money on i.e. Robbie Keane, Aquilani and Babel with no plans whatsoever for how to use them. We have been spoilt by using money for ages and ages, and we are now learning the hard way thta we have to be smart with our money, and that doesnt harm us. But players like Jovanovic (free, but still) and Poulsen are meaningless aquisitons to a team.

I might have missed it but did he make any comments when we signed Joe Cole?
Obviously not because that didn't quite fit in with his agenda.

So out of the 5 players you mention, Roy is responsible for one of them.

You obviously misunderstood the context of my post. I tried to imply that we have spent huge money as a club. It was a reference there were someone splashed 8 mill on a chubby portugese without seen him play and I responded that we have been spoilt with splashing cash ourselves. And now we have to monitor players brought in better. It was not an attack on Roy. However the one hewas responsible for would probably not raise the pulse of any Fulham fans neither.

However right he may be, we couldn't get a better full back at that price. With PL experience and home grown.

Cascarino is a cunt, always has been.

He's not any worse than O'shea.

Did you say the same when we bought Meireles? Or Cole?

No. What's that got to do with anything?

That you can't draw all kind of conclusions based on one transfer alone when it's one out of many?

Poor lazy agenda-ridden journalism if you ask me. Unless of course he's of the opinion that it's same with regards to all of our transfers in this windows.

Either way he's blatantly wrong.

He's always at it, putting the most pessimistic spin he can on anything to do with us. Not that he's alone in that among the media, but he is just about the most blatant. Shit player, shit pundit., an all-round 24 carat waste of oxygen.

he'd be more than right to say those things if we bring in carlton cole....

I mean, don't get me wrong, he's a decent striker who'll get the odd goal, but again none of the top 5/6 sides in the league would take him.
Quite a lot of them would though..........
Nearly all of their first team players would currently walk into our team, with perhaps the exception of their goalkeepers. We have gaping holes everywhere.

Essentially he's correct, but what I don't get it is why he's only making this observation now.

We've been signing shit players for years.

No they're not, because had we not signed them, we'd be relying (again) on dross like Lucas, Plessis and Insua to get us through the majority of our season.

The fact that you're right in what you've posted doesn't mean that we shouldn't spend what limited funds that we do have to improve on obviously weak spots on the team.

PK may not be a world beater, but let's not pretend that he's replacing Steve Nicol. He IS an improvement on who he's replacing.
