I just never found much to like about US socca ... From their 'young stars' (like Adu, Altidore - or in the past, Hejduk or Donovan) to their hyped up 'We'll catch up the world eventually' slogan, I just never was reeled in. Oh well, maybe they'll eventually get it 'right' but as long as the major sports league (money wise) are the NBA, NHL, MLB & NFL - I doubt it will happen.

All very true. I find myself in that familiar predicament of really wanting them to succeed but having to watch them play in fast forward.
Given that US soccer players are essentially the 4th tier of athletes in the country, as you pointed out, and are at the least competitive on the world stage, I can still stick one hypothetically grubby little finger in everyone else's eye.
