I know, he wanted Kuyt and Alves but could only afford Kuyt and Pennant. That'show I remember it.

If it wasn't for David Moores lending the club money to spend he would have only been able to afford Pennant.
He had limited resources and chose to sign Pennant and Kuyt instead of Alves. I don't think Alves was ever coming here anyway, hence why Rafa took the other two afterwards.
It's even more tragic. There were strong rumours that Parry and the board had agreed the fee but dug their heels in over paying it by instalments and Seville rejected that.

Rafa had 17m ready to go and a choice with how to use it. He chose Pennant and Kuyt, instead of Alves.

If Rafa had wanted Alves, he could have prioritised him. But I don't think he was ever coming here anyway. Which is why after we couldn't do the Alves deal (in June 2006) we opted to sign Kuyt and Pennant (In July and August 2006).
How we couldn't agree a deal for 12m with 17m sitting in the bank if that was the player we wanted, I don't know.
Unless of course it was true all the time and Seville turned down this "norm in the footballing world".
