To me the potential Lovren signing is the most important one of the summer. More important than Lallana or Markovic or any potential striker we are looking to sign now. We can do with a decreased attacking threat, after losing Suarez, if our defense significantly improves. But if it doesn't and whatever attacking players we sign to replace Suarez don't hit the ground running (which is very possible and likely), I can see us slipping back into mid-table in the first few months of the next season. Then it will be a difficult climb to make up the deficit over the rest of the season to get back into top 4. With a stronger United and Arsenal, we might just miss out.

However if we do improve the defense by the start of the season, it could carry us through the first few months while the attacking players work out the kinks and adjust to life without Suarez, and in the 2nd half of the season our improved squad quality and depth should ensure we'll be in good shape. Last season Rodgers shuffled through all the possible CB combinations and none of them truly passed the test. We need a top quality new addition who could then play with either Sakho or Skrtel and form a partnership that truly works. Fullbacks are also important, but you have to sort out the CB situation first – that's the spine of the team and everything grows from there.

If Lovren deal doesn't work out, I still think Vertonghen would offer an excellent alternative. People usually have short memories and last season wasn't the best for him, but make no mistake – that's a top class CB and a real defense organizer. I heard that Barcelona are considering either him or Marquinhos as their main targets, I hope Rodgers is monitoring the situation as well. We don't need to skimp on this position, the players who fit our present requirements are rare and finding a new defensive leader will be worth every penny in the long run.

He might be a bit young to be the kind of defensive organizer and leader that I think we need, but I would also take a strong look at Feenoord's Stefan De Vrij, who had a magnificent World Cup. I think he was leading all defenders in both tackles and defensive duels won.

I do think we need another option besides Kolo/Skrtel/Sakho with Agger likely heading out. We have Kelly and Wisdom both as potential youth options, plus Ilori and Coates as more developed choices.

I liked De Vrij quite a bit, and he would be my pick of your three, as I wouldn't want to spend more than 15M on this position. It sounds like we're getting mauled in negotiations by Southampton again though over Lovren, so I wouldn't be surprised to see us just bring him in for 20M...

I like Vertonghen the player, but not Vertonghen the personality/person. I tend to be ultra pragmatic when it comes to these things, but he seems like the sort of moody players that could really rock the boat. Maybe he settles down when he moves from Spurs, but I'm not confident in spending serious money on him.

I think Caulker could be a very smart signing for us at the reported 8M figure, bit like how Chelsea snagged Cahill a few seasons back. Even if we end up loaning him straight back out somewhere, he would be a really smart asset to grab.

I'm a big fan of Kostas Manolas, he could be exactly the player we need. Looks like a fantastic player.

Toprak of Leverkusen is another one I like a lot. There's also the guy we were linked to, Dede, who had a strong season in Brazil.

Lots of choices out there, I think we're being rash to spend 20M on Lovren.

Agree. It's slightly worrying we aren't being linked with centrebacks other than Lovren.

It's not just a personnel issue. Rodgers needs to adjust the system and do the work on the training field to ensure the defence gets better.

There were a lot of unforced individual errors last season but we also often looked very vulnerable as a team.

Lot of work for Rodgers.

I think he's on his way to United isn't he ? Definitely moving, I think that ship's sailed.

Haven't seen anything that near that decisive. Honestly, more substantial links to Hummels and Vidal for United than De Vrij at this point.

Carra should be roped in now that Hyppia is at Brighton

Ron Vlaar was the Dutch defender in charge of the organisation of the defence.

He had a brilliant World Cup.

Hope we don't buy him.

We will get Lovren. BR has shown a pit bull-like attitude towards getting his plan A targets. Lallana and Moreno deals is confirmation of this.

I don't know anything about Vertonghen as a person. What did I miss?

I'd love Verthongen but with our system we could have Maldini and Beresi in their prime and they'll still get torn apart next season time and time again.

The system, full backs, DM and CB's all need addressing if we are not going to change how we set up.

Centre Defence is now becoming a massive headache..

In our ranks:

Want to be starting based on experience
Skrtel
Agger
Sakho

Happy to be on bench/ squad
Toure
Coates

BIG potential
Ilori
Wisdom

The problem here being that we have maybe 2 too many. Ilori and Wisdom have both had excellent loan spells by all accounts and for me either need to be on the fringes of the team (instead of Kolo and Coates) or be sent out on loan again. Other title challenging teams are happy enough to trust youth if they have a big injury problem (e.g. Chelsea playing Kalas, United when they started bringing in Smalling/ Evans). Why should we persist with average players as back up when they are taking opportunities from potential stars.

I know @Frogfish is going to come in and defend Kolo. I don't dislike the guy and think he was a good addition at 4th choice but he is entering his last season of football and why should we let him take those 5 or 6 appearances away from Ilori or Wisdom (should they not go back out on loan).

No I agree with you Brizzle. I thought Kolo was just what we needed on the bench or even starting last season .. but I'd prefer Ilori there now that he has a full season in La Liga under his belt.

So for next season : Lovren (I don't think you can ignore him considering we have just put our 2nd bid in and he is dead keen to come here), Sakho, Skrtel and Ilori.

I am not at all convinced with Wisdom, maybe his loan period did him good but he's not competing with those above so either another loan or arrivederci.

Thanks for the memories Agger, Coates and Toure.

All fair - I think if Lovren comes in then one of the top 3 needs to come in. Also agree that you'd think one of Ilori or Wisdom would need to go out on loan again. I think Wisdom would get more interest given his Championship experience and Ilori might need more time to spend with our own coaches.
