" I like seeing them all fail".. "It's a lot of fun"...

Jesus Keni, and Oncy was just talking about people throwing stones.
Heh, well the super patriotic and passionate commentators do make it fun to see their energy and belief die a slow death as the game goes on. I watched a lot of the Scotland v Holland game tonight and it quite entertaining.

And besides, you can't say the other home nations didn't snigger when England missed out on Euro '08, can you?
I can't deny that it wasn't funny ye missing out. But it's also due to the expextations held over the England team and the fact it's hammered down our throats during qualifiers and then carried into tournaments.

Semi's of Euro 96 too.

It's not great but it's something.
I've said this before, I'll say it again.

Euro 96 was a shit tournament packed full of shit teams.

It's only the English in some depserate attempt at creating something out of nothing that think it was anything remotely memorable.
That opening ceremony...SHITE. Truly the worst thing there's ever been. It was almost endearingly awful.
Dont get me wrong Ken. I fucking LOOOOOVE it when the Sweats go out/dont make it! Seeing all those tartan clad ginger wig wearing kilted pissheads walking home in the rain with the ginger hair stuck to the sides of their windswept rosy cheeks swearing 'Thas a fuggin deesgrace tha by the way' and 'Brooon oot, aye he's ta go noo' lovely stuff.
Haha, that's more like it.

with the personnel england have plus the savvy of their manager coupled with the competitiveness of their league any less than a semi final place is underacievement. that's not an arrogant view imho. take italy who actually WON the world cup their players aren't as good as the english players put it this way how many of the italians would get in the england first 11? the keeper, pirlo and then...? before anyone mentions totti england have lamprd AND gerrard.
Yup, and they've had these players togethor for 10 years and won fuck all. Actually haven't even come close to winning anything. Before that, they had great players too, and zip.

Take Rosco's post for example; Terry and Ferdinand - yup, great defenders. But they're past their best and have been part of England's back 4 for years and done zero. Cole? Past his best? The midfield? Lampard, Barry and Gerrard may be wonderful footballers - but England get nothing out of them - they look disjointed, out of position, lacking in cohesion, and get passed off the park byt slightly better than average opposition. Strikers? Well, let's just say that Rooney and Heskey aren't Vill and Torres.

You've always ALWAYS had good players, and dspite insistence to the contrary - have near;y always had good managers too. You'll still fail when it comes to the crunch though. You can't even beat Portugal.
All of that is true. Can't disagree with any of it.

England has always been a team of individuals who seem hellbent on not playing as a team. The Euro 96 side actually played like a team despite actually not having many if any, "world class" individuals. And Shearer was not world class.

Its all about the team dynamic and we struggle with that tournament in, tournamant out.

Someone said the semis is the minimum we should expect? Why? We are ranked about 10 in the world so why should we "expect" the semis. This is part of the issue for England. They are told they are better than they are by an expectant press and fans and then when they don't achieve the unrealistic goal set for them, they are slaughtered by the same.

I hate the press when it comes to England games, its boring, jingoistic crap that frankly shames us. But they will never, ever change tack.

i think our euro 96 side was excellent, personally.

seaman was great.
good fullbacks in pearce and neville.
adams at the back
ince was wonderful in midfield.
gazza
mcmanaman
sherringham
and shearer was, quite incredibly obviously, world-class.

and robbie fowler in his prime. on the bench.
Dont fuckin empower the bitter ballacks.
If football as a sport lasts for another THOUSAND years, our country will still have won at least one more international tournament than his ever will, so let him boo hoo all he fucking likes, Christ his country best player doesnt want to play for them and their best ever manager is English.
Im hoping Ryans 'magic' from this summers ashes thread spills over into this one.
Don't be such a bellend.

The thread 'Can England win the World Cup?' wasn't started by me, nor were the "were a great chance, come close before, world class players, if the World Cup started tomorrow" posts.

Sorry for interrupting the fawning and misguided optimism in here, my realism obviously isn't what you're after.

Well the drive-thru window does cover your bottom half, so it mightn't be that big a deal.

Slaven Bilic :

"They can definitely win the World Cup. Definitely. It's not easy to play every game like that, but they did not misplace a pass in the first half-hour. All their passes were dangerous, one-twos … perfect. If they play like that, then of course they can win it."

Holding your nerve, mental strength, single-mindedness etc etc is the key factor which sets apart the winner amongst well matched opponents. Players bonding and taking responsibility as German sides of the past, in particular; have displayed when winning tournaments involving better talented teams.

Croatia looked very ordinary, I agree. But they are the ninth-ranked team in the world according to FIFA, so your definition of 'really average' is perhaps being stretched a little.

Maybe there just aren't many good international sides around anymore? Who would England have to beat 5-1 before you were impressed?
Wise up Ryan.
You know when everyone but Dreambeliever/Rage/insertgobshite can see they are being dumb/dogmatic/repetitive/gobshites and they think they are being sage like?

*holds up mirror*

No one on here has said we will win the world cup, most have even said they find it unlikely. Even the staunch England fans such as myself have said that we will norse it up at some point.
So why continue with your bitter little tirades? Who are you hoping to convince we arent good enough?
Seriously. Wise up.

It was a belting performance, in particular the first half. They were poor but how many times have teams better than England come up agains poor opposition and not done the business?
It was aggressive and positive from the off and 8-0 wouldnt have flattered us.

England can win it cause they have the best manager in the world today.
Everything he touches turns to Gold, all hail Capello.
I heard he would retire after taking England to the world cup, hope not.
If Rafa went I'd love him to take charge, he's the one manager who I truly believe can bring us the title.

Yeah right...4 headers. Dangerous one-twos my arse.

It was a poor defensive display from Croatia and there was nothing, and I repeat (x10000), nothing spectacularly special about England's performance last night.

If it was anything, it was a very disciplined and efficient performance against a pretty disorganized Croatian team who got their tactics wrong from the beginning, partly due to key personnel lacking in form, discipline or missing through injuries.

No way will England win the World Cup, even based on last night's performance. I mean don't get me wrong, they will definitely go further than before. But they still don't have that Plan B when they find themselves up against a world-class team e.g. Spain, Brazil, Germany, etc. Especially in tense moments such as during Extra Time or Sudden Death.

Lennon was awesome last night but a world-class leftback would not gift Lennon the amount of space to run at, like last night. But the biggest achievement Capello has done, which no other manager has done before, is to finally find a way to play Fat Frank and Stevie G together and make them gel to lethal effect.

*wonders how many 'world-class left backs there will be at the WC *

Lahm (and supposedly even he was off the boil last season) ..... and ? I would back Lennon & Johnson against any 'world-class left-back'.

Brazil 9/2
Spain 9/2
England 6/1
Argentina 9/1
Germany 11/1
Italy 12/1
Holland 12/1
Russia 25/1
France 25/1
Portugal 33/1
Ivory Coast 33/1

It looks like we'll have at least one player in the squad next year with a World Cup winners medal.
