Caice-d'oh!

We've looked like chumps for weeks but this is tragically bad.
Chelsea have been trying to sign this kid all summer, and we've had a bid accepted in less than 24 hours of making contact, leading Chelsea to double their wage offer and cancel a transfer that was already past the medical, just so they can scrape enough money together to match out offer, and you think it's us that look tragically bad? I swear some of you folks just wanna be angry at the club regardless of the situation.

Realistically, he is going to Chelsea. Boehly is fucking insane and has signed about 30 players in the last year. He's going to do anything to get this done, including doubling his wages and offering 130 million to Brighton if required.

There's no way we can compete with that with a greedy agent in tow. The only way we have a chance at this deal is if the player himself had a clear preference for us, and cared about the footballing project under Klopp being significantly better than the one at Chelsea.

But the context to the player is that he comes from an extremely impoverished background, was earning 5k a week just 12 months, and is now surrounded by a bunch of money-grabbing greasy fuckwads. There is literally no chance they will push him to choose the better 'footballing' project when there's significantly more money to be made in the Chelsea offer.

We may hope for Brighton to help us by asking Chelsea to fuck off, but from their perspective they have nothing to lose really. They're getting their 110 million (or more) one way the other. This may delay things a bit, but that allows them to possibly ask for money, which Chelsea will probably agree to given what a psycho Boehly is.

Once upon a time we wouldn't have entertained any questions about it in this mornings press conference. In addition, we've needed a centre back since at least last Summer, yet here we are, relying on three crocks and a lad who looked on the decline last season.

I swear they could sell Salah and buy Shane Long and you'd still blow smoke up their arse.

I mean you're just proving my point Mark, I've literally said in this thread the centre back situation is ridiculous and going to bite us in the arse, yet here you are trying to pin that on me for some reason. Nothing I've said about Caicedo is wrong and you know it, you just want to be angry at FSG. I mean fair enough, but at least do me the service of actually reading my posts and opinions before accusing me of things I fundamentally disagree with.

I don’t think this saga makes us look bad - but it does make football look bad. With all the insane money brought in by the Saudis and the Russians etc, leave it to the yanks to obliterate any remaining sense of responsibility and proportion, leading to players being “packaged” and traded back and forth like financial assets as they do in American sports. Poor Tyler Adams already had his medical done and they told him to fuck off because they might need more money for Caicedo. The whole thing just feels dirty.

It will be disappointing if he does go to Chelsea as he would have been the perfect player for our midfield but personally, I would be a lot more mad with FSG/LFC if I thought that there was an opportunity to get him and they didn't bother their arse

I wish Edwards was still around....

Oh well we have to learn form this and pivot.

Any player that would choose Chelsea over Liverpool its either realted to wages, signing bonus issues or extreme stupidity.

I'm happy to move on and glad we do infact have funds to spend, my only concern is that we dont actually seem to have a polished, well organasied, strategy.

Even before Fabs and Hendo left it was clear we needed a 6 becuase both Hendo and Fabs were being run down, there should have been some sort of pre work on a shortlist of defensive midfield players. I cant belive that this last minute gamble on Caideo is the range and extent of the summer work???

I know it's a different position etc but I think we got the best CM from Brighton already. Yes it would be great to have them both but we can spend this money on 2 more players. We need a CB.

Its gone really quiet in all honesty. Just waiting for a confirmation that we've pulled out, or agreed a fee for another player.

I really do think the original plan was Lavia and Badger tits as understudies to Fabinho and Thiago, with the hope they'd be ready next season when both their contracts ran out, but obviously the Saudi factor has thrown a curve ball. Maybe we haven't adapted to that as quickly as we should have, I do think we were just going to stick to the original plan but without Fabinho, however we clearly were offered a chance of Caicedo this week and have decided to go all in on it. I'm not convinced this was all a ploy by camp Caicedo to force Chelseas hand, but it's more as dmishra highlighted, i dont think anyone was prepared for the lunacy of Boehly.

We need a top class DM far far more than we need a back up CB.

I'll be very upset if we don't get Caicedo now. We'd have had a superbly balanced midfield for the next 5-7 years and be in the mix THIS season for the PL title.

Lavia's head to head with Caicedo that Binny posted earlier was actually very interesting as they are very indeed very close (but Caicedo a better tackler / ball winner) and Lavia could be Caicedo Mk 2 within a couple of seasons.
But we need a top quality DM now if we're going to challenge. I was really excited to see that midfield in action.

I more than anyone moaned about FSG, However, they gave Klopp £200m this window before sales. The club did everything right, if Chelsea want to pay £15m a salary and £111m transfer fee, and LFC don't want to compete, I am okay with that. Everyone has a threshold.
I'd rather get 2MF and a CB over one CDM.

Manuel Sierra will black balled by both Liverpool and Brighton after this if indeed they do hold for Chelsea.

We asked if they'd accept a move to us.

Caiceidos camp including agent said yes.

If anyone has made us look like mugs it's them rather than FSG in this saga.

A bit more than accept a move they sorted out personal terms!

Just got greedy when Chelsea went ballistic when we out bid them. The choice being go along with the agreed up front process or advise their seemingly easily swayed protege that he needed to hold out for Chelsea because they’d had an epi and promised the world (including double wages for longer) which would significantly increase their cut

Personally, I'm still waiting for @Hansern to say "I am serious, and don't call me Shirley!"
I mean seriously mate, I set that one up for you hours ago.
The ones that got it are perfectly good with the joke as it was without making it obvious for the ones that didn't.

If we had all this money, I wish we'd just stuck it on Gvardiol AND Lavia. Yeah, we wouldn't have got the perfect DM, but we'd have sorted out our LCB problem completely. Gvardiol was a big Liverpool fan too.
