Caice-d'oh!

Best case we get Caicedo worst case we just made Chelsea pay £110+ mill for him.

This really isn't good ...
High => Low and now the club knows they need a huge signing to get the fans off that, and I assume the playing staff and manager too ... what a bad omen.

I seem to recall reading an article, perhaps in the Athletic, on the purchase of Caicedo by Brighton.
If memory serves me right there were many complications with the transfer, among which were numerous parties having rights to much of the fee paid.
It was enough to put off lot of other clubs in trying to buy him, even though there was considerable interest at the time.
Perhaps things are no different now

His ex club alone has a 20% sell on clause

There's a good chance those same people still expect a cut of the fee on this deal.
Usually when this sort of thing happens, the agent ends up promising to "sort it all out", which basically means asking for a stonking agent fee and then paying off people who have no strict legal right to anything because third party ownership is outlawed by FIFA. That might happen here too, and may be why Chelsea weren't big on paying a huge transfer fee in the first place (because they've researched the deal well enough to know they'll have to pay the agent off).
Also sits well with the suggestion the agent is a bit of a nob.
And bearing in mind changes to agent regs after this window, probably means this is the last chance to get this done.

We just had a shit season, and it just hit a new low for many (not for me as I didn't want him). My issue right now is how the fuck we cannot see beyond Lavia, and Caicedo as a new DM is beyond me. I just don't get it, - I really don't think Caicedo is that great anyway - what the fuck am I missing ? - someone please tell me !!! - the world has gone crazy when a DM costs more than £50M - its a fucking joke.

Assuming he signs for us, in what way do we look dickheads? We contacted Brighton and had a deal accepted within hours, Chelsea has faffed around for months, we've tied it up in a day.

We obviously knew about Caicedo, but didn't need him / couldn't afford him before the Saudi transfers, but they changed everything. This might still fall through, but at the moment I'm convinced it's just agent talk, Chelsea won't match, but even they do, we can't control if the player / agent are dishonest, they obviously encouraged our bid and it seems Caicedo wants to come, but the agent is playing funny bollocks.

We've been clinical here, we've made Chelsea look like dickheads, and conversely both us and Brighton have come out looking like the more professional outfits who want to get things done, him going to Chelsea doesn't change that for me.

I do agree about your concerns over the centre back position though, we're shamefully light there, an injury to Konate (which let's be honest is a foregone conclusion) and we're fucked.

If the Fabinho deal changed everything, why did we not automatically pivot to Caicedeo rather than dicking around with Lavia for 3-4 weeks? Chelsea were still dragging their heels at this point. That would be the bare minimum you would expect for a potential club/PL record-breaking transfer. I just find it bizarre that we can turn to a £110M player after having a bid rejected for a £45-£50M player. When you spend big that amount of money the player should have always been, or made to feel at least, the first choice. I cannot recall anything like that happening before. Then you factor in everything we're doing getting leaked to every possible journalist under The Lying Rag. It all just feels too much like a kid playing football manager to me and I'm longing for the Edwards days when we seemed to have our shit together.

Stop it! Some posters have already shown (based on one source - which may or may not turn out to be accurate) that they are more than happy to blame this all on LFC/FSG and will be agast at common sense posts like this.

Will be a bit gutting if this doesn't transpire now. On paper he's exactly what we need.

£100M plus is definitely crazy money but I guess that's just the way the market is right now.
