Whatever happens, Brighton has made both us and Chelsea look like complete dickheads. I feel like we're 'all in' at this point. If Caicedo joins Chelsea then other clubs will jack up their prices and the market gets further inflated. Additionally, the amount of cretins on the internet praising Jorj for using Lavia as a smokescreen for our real target has made me wince. This has never been the plan. There's been no groundwork in place for this deal - Arsenal worked on Rice for 12 months. We likely had a 6-12 month plan to attract VVD. There's been none of that for Caicedo. It's all been lost in the turnover of Sporting Directors and it will largely be for that reason if we do not get this over the line.
All we've done is write off signing a CB, combined whatever cash we do have, and stuck it all on red 5 minutes before the casino shuts. Whether we come out winners or losers there's no doubt that this has been messy and uncoordinated.
Assuming he signs for us, in what way do we look dickheads? We contacted Brighton and had a deal accepted within hours, Chelsea has faffed around for months, we've tied it up in a day.
We obviously knew about Caicedo, but didn't need him / couldn't afford him before the Saudi transfers, but they changed everything. This might still fall through, but at the moment I'm convinced it's just agent talk, Chelsea won't match, but even they do, we can't control if the player / agent are dishonest, they obviously encouraged our bid and it seems Caicedo wants to come, but the agent is playing funny bollocks.
We've been clinical here, we've made Chelsea look like dickheads, and conversely both us and Brighton have come out looking like the more professional outfits who want to get things done, him going to Chelsea doesn't change that for me.
I do agree about your concerns over the centre back position though, we're shamefully light there, an injury to Konate (which let's be honest is a foregone conclusion) and we're fucked.
