Burnley (H) - Post Match

I felt this game showed our attackers playing with an intensity that we didn't show (or couldn't show) against Everton. Our press was better, we were more direct and I reckon stats around number of sprints would show it too. It's a shame it took us to go 0-1 down to turn it on but great to see that we could switch into full on attack mode.

Klopp talks a lot about reaction and reacting to certain situations. I thought we were very good yesterday, and I really enjoyed the fight we showed.

I like winning, and I don't care if it's lucky, "ugly" or well-deserved and easy. Yesterday was a weird mix of all three; we certainly didn't look comfortable, but we scored four and were unfortunate to concede two. There was a more fluid look to the team, and we created decent chances with some sharp, aggressive football, but it wasn't entirely convincing or dominant.

As everyone predicted, Klopp changed the midfield, but what nobody expected was that it would be Lallana (after impressing in training according to Klopp) who came in, and not £60m Keita or six goal Shaqiri. And he performed well to justify that call.

Alisson (6) Fouled for the first goal, and was verrrrry angry. Kept it simple after that, and made a few decent catches under the high ball, before conceding a late second.

TAA (5) Had a very tough time against a tricky winger, who got inside him on a few occasions. Should have added to his assists with one devilish cross that Mane somehow missed, but was very inconsistent apart from that. Maybe it was the wind. Ordinary.

Virgil (7) Another good game from one of the best defenders in the world. Dominated in the air, calm in possession, tried his best to start attacks with some good diagonal balls.

Matip (5) Poor start to the game, with sloppy play and his usual 50p headed nonsense. Stiffened up and looked much sharper and solid after half-time, but loose play like that is often punished.

Robertson (6) Deserved to add to that superb tally of assists with one superb ball that deserved better than Wijnaldum's typical timidity in front of goal, but probably should have done better with some situations. Won't be happy with the second goal, but apart from that wasn't troubled defensively. Not at his very best, and a little tired towards the end.

Wijnaldum (6) This might be generous. He was his usual "neat and tidy" and strong in possession, but did little of note, and missed a sitter with his head. Looked tired and was rightly replaced by Henderson, who added far more energy and dynamism.

Fabinho (7) Solid and has a pleasing ability to read play and be in the right place at the right time to snuff out danger. Sometimes unfairly, but tactical fouls are a crucial skill also. Not as adventurous with his passing as usual.

Lallana (7) Well, well, well. Nobody predicted he would start, and Lallana seemed hellbent on proving he still deserves a place in this Liverpool team. Worked hard to deny Burnley time and space, and it was his flying interception that helped create the second goal. Saw plenty of the ball and used it intelligently.

Salah (7) Instrumental for the equaliser and also caused panic in the area when Mane scored the second, Salah was a constant threat, without ever really looking sure of himself in front of goal, but he had a hand in almost every threatening situation we had and forced a great save from Heaton at the end. Getting sharper and the goals will return.

Mane (8) What a season he is having. Lovely finish for the first and after missing a sitter, showed superb composure to slot the fourth and settle nerves. Always looking to attack and was a fast-moving, aggressive attacking force of nature that burnley just couldn't handle.

Firmino (8) At last! He's had a sloppy, inconsistent season with some very poor displays and obviously not enough goals. But this was much more like it. Worked hard, combined well with Lallana, Mane and Salah, bewitching Tarkowski and co with clever flicks and passes and darting runs, and was on hand to slot two tap ins after 6 games without a goal

Subs:

Henderson (6) Energetic display of booting Burnley in the arse and up into the air whenever he had the chance. Which was enjoyable.
Keita (5) Game was made for him
Sturridge (6) Beautiful control, turn and pass for the Mane goal.

Not always simple. Several times during the game I was thinking, 'What are you DOING???' while watching him. There was one occasion when he let a forward run at him and he almost got caught before belatedly kicking it away. It's probably more his defenders to blame than him, because they keep giving him the ball and leaving him to it, but I could really do without the anxiety of seeing him try that footwork every damn game!

I thought Matip was good on a number of occasions with clearances that were deliberate passes into an attacker which helped us break on Burnley a number of times. Largely agree with the rest and thought Robbo was closer to his best in both defence and in high paced attacks & runs in behind.

On the Red Sea with little network connection. Zero connectivity from Friday til this morning, so asked my son to text me scores. Connected this morning and immediately loads of pings for incoming messages, so excitedly opened them - only to find a series of complaints on how his phone credit had run out. Little twat.

Can't c&p Ben Johnnos ratings, but here's a link if you're interested

I'd give Lallana an 8 but other than that I think this is pretty accurate
Wijnaldum and both full backs could really do with a rest, they all look very tired and have dipped in form badly.
I think Matip is just shit. Unlikely to happen but we could really do with Lovren hitting some form on his return as he can be a much better defender when at his best

On a day when Yorkshire confirms what the rest of the world already knew by developing a major traffic jam westbound on the M62, I'd just like to say James Milner is one denizen of that county I'd let live if I ruled the planet.

Lallana's tackle was 100% luck. You make your own luck they say, he made his but it is still luck that it fell to our player in good area........
And how many times does luck not fall our way in the box with passes deflected and falling to defenders or rebounding off someone into a keeper's arms, and the like. It's rather strange to put that goal down to 100% luck, yes the ball fell our way but it was a brilliant gegenpressing tackle in the first place so to call it 100% luck isn't right for me.

The whole premise of gengenpressing is that it creates opportunities from mistakes/tackles/blocks so hard to say it is luck when it is what we 100% play to do

It is not pure Luck. It comes from the press together with movements. The 3-1 was a bit Lucky as that was really poor from the goalie, but again Bobby has to make that run better than opposition to be first on the rebound. The 1-1 is actually very neat play and I think Salah does it very good to Control that ball enough to put it infront of goal. For me we are just better and faster than them in that situation. Goalie could have done better of course, but evryone can do better if tempo is slower.

Henderson not playing and us scoring goals and winning is an actual thing now. From our last six he's started three and we've scored none. The three he hasn't started we've scored twelve.
I've been saying this for months...but hey...it's too late now

@Morse's thread isn't here yet, but my top 3 would be:
  1. Firmino – back to his best, he was sharp with every touch and pass and was a strong candidate for MOTM even without his 2 goals
  2. Lallana – set the tone with his willingness to press and created the 2nd goal with an audacious tackle.
  3. Mane – less influential in our attacking build-up, but took his goals very well and probably should have had a hat-trick.
Honorable mentions to Salah, who hasn't scored, but helped create chaos for others to take advantage of, and Fabinho who I thought was excellent again.

Hmm....Interesting stat.
I thought he played alright when he came on the other day to be fair, but I just can't be arsed with him in the starting 11 anymore.

He doesn't play bad, it's not him personally, it's just that if we play him we play with a holding midfield instead of an attacking one, and it doesn't work.

As I’ve said a couple of times, Lallana showed what we lack when Hendo plays. Henderson is not a ball player at all. I like him but his days are numbered.

We play with a holding midfielder in Fabinho though. Difference is he's really good.

Yeah but when we play Henderson we still play Fabinho, and Gini or Milner. That's the problem. It seems that when Henderson is dropped a more attacking player comes in and the balance is much better

Yeah, it's ironic that Hendo is currently playing some of his best football of recent years – but Klopp's attempts to find a new role for him while still keeping Fabinho in DM don't seem to be working. Other midfield combinations simply offer better balance, even when individual players don't perform as well.

Yeah, but as Woland said, it's not that, it's playing Henderson as well as Fabinho and Wijnaldum.

I've famously never been Hendo's biggest fan - especially in his early years - but it's unfair to claim he's terrible, or indeed that he isn't good enough. At his best, he certainly is.

But if you're playing a specialist DM - a role he can play - then it becomes trickier because Fabinho is better at it.
