Boring James Milner

In fairness to the guy he acknowledged publicly on here that his posts were going OTT too often and said he was leaving the forum for that reason. I'd had the occasional run-in with him myself, but I thought he did himself credit in the way he left.

He did seem rather too easily riled, yes.

Hmm. I remember when the euphoria around Kenny's second coming was somewhat tempered for me by thinking about some of the truly horrible transfer decisions he had made while managing Newcastle. Nobody's perfect, not even The King, but some of those calls were appalling.

And then we got Charlie Adam, Downing and Carroll.

And also Suarez. So maybe it all evens out!

Peter Hague had a few entertaining meltdowns. I think one of his dog-whistles was Rodgers and the transfer committee, and there was another where he belatedly realised he was presenting two diammetrically opposed opinions and was essentially arguing with himself.

Nothing on the scale of an Original Dreamy or spider-neil, though. Like we could get that lucky.
Peter Hague showed his true colours in the "She's dead" thread. After that I treated all he posted with total contempt

Why are you guys ruining my Boring Milner thread with Peter Hague. He didn’t get on with me.

He's exactly the sort of footballer that your typical whiteboard-wielding, stat-monkey superfan who really "understands football" and is beholden to more aesthetically pleasing, cultured footballing "technicians", don't like and don't rate.

Which obviously makes me like him more.

Bullshit, I don't think there anyone here, whiteboard or not, who doesn't rate Milner and what he's brought to this team, particularly in the last couple of months. Or Robertson, who seems be cut from the same cloth. You seem to be arguing with a stereotype of a fan that exists only in your head.

BTW, when Milner was just starting his good run of form around late January, the "football nerds" immediately took notice, and in fact you were the one doubting his ability (here's just one quote of many, I recommend reading it in context):
It is, but I wouldn't play AOC or Milner in that advanced role, Milner is too lumpen and agricultural, and AOC is brainless and has zero end product.

Chortle.

I must say, I'm enjoying Dreamy resurrecting his old Forum persona: the no-holds-barred, consensus-wrecking, straight-talking, giving us the hard facts and making us confront the difficult truths, one.

He did it for a while a few years ago and it was equally hilarious. Even if he's still not sure if he's objective or subjective, because he doesn't know what they mean.

It's a wonder.

That's a very subjective opinion Brendan.

If I recall, he didn't use any information at all, just had a list of bad signings (= Rodgers alone) and good signings (= Transfer committee, no input - or possibly even active opposition from Rodgers)

Or was it the other way around?

Shows you how persuasive he was.

He put complete faith in what one of the hacks used to say as signifying who signed who. Until said hack insisted that Lallana was finished in Rodgers' team because of the Firmino signing. Even though the same hack insisted Lallana was Rodgers' player and Firmino the committees.

He said the teamsheet in the first game of the season would tell us who signed who, because it would inevitably contain just Rodgers' own signings, or something. Firmino made 31 prem appearances in his first season under Rodgers. A game more than Lallana. So neither were the victim of any bias.

That's not doubting his ability, that's a fairly accurate description of his ability in an advanced midfield role.

Of course, I think you'll find a lot more positive sentiment about Milner from me, should you choose to look for it

Firmino played about 4 games under Rodgers and then Rodgers was sacked.

Odd, rurik, that you seemed to agree with this sentiment, although you did use rather more damning language:

"Milner is useless in attack"

"I really don't like the idea of Milner as a 4th-choice CM as I think despite his age and experience he's the least positionally disciplined midfielder"

"Milner played in the midfield 2 for us and was terrible – always drawn to the wings and attack, leaving huge gaps in the key areas in the middle of the pitch. I posted a detailed tactical analysis from some blog some time ago – it's not pretty reading for Milner"

"he can't be a full-time CM"

So yeah, we can't always get it right, eh?

Well whatever, he started the season under him anyway and the whole Lallana/Firmino thing was a complete contradiction.

I don't really fancy going back over starting line-ups, but I'm pretty sure it was a few games into the season when Firmino got his first start, because I remember wondering why he wasn't starting after we spent so much on him.

Hague put complete faith in this hack as knowing the ins and outs of who signed who. Hague insisted that Lallana was signed by Rodgers and Firmino by the Committee, so when the hack came out and said Lallana was finished at Liverpool, because Rodgers was ready to replace him in the team with Firmino, it undid his theory completely and he made a twat out of himself. And the hack was wrong anyway (I think it might have been Prentice, I can't remember now)

But anyway, my memory of it all is a bit hazy now, goes to show how obsessed I supposedly am with Rodgers, that I don't know when he left.
