Aye. Imagine this place if Everton beat city and we beat palace?!?

We're not favourites but we were 30 hours ago and that pendulum could swing back in our favour easily enough.

To be fair, let's just dick palace and Newcastle 20-0 on aggregate and forget about city altogether!

I just read online that they've only won at Goodison once in their past 15 trips... That can't be true, can it? Either way, that's a tough game... This isn't over.

City will walk it, and the other teams will improve a fair bit. If we don't win it this year it's likely our best chance gone for a good while. We need to buy a fair few players in the summer. All good ones, no more of this padding out the squad Aspas/Moses/Alberto type shite. We need people of the quality of Coutinho, Sturridge and Suarez to come in.

i don't want to blame anyone we simply lost our first game after 11 wins. we were going to lose eventually it is just the nature of it that hurts, because of stevies slip

this is going to hurt for a while and work today is going to be piss take city by the chavs and mancs

Days like today make me love my office where there isn't a single person who knows or cares one iota about footy.

We have to get everything right this summer, and make sure our best players are all on form next season, and hope we don't have many injuries. All those things happen and we'll challenge. They're unlikely to though.

I don't see any reason to suppose that that's the case. Based on the way this season's gone, I reckon we have as good a chance as anybody of putting that kind of package together successfully.

We don't have the depth or the money. And as other people have said, City and Chelsea will go out and blow another 100-200m, we will spend about 50m net tops, that's on top of an already inferior squad. Plus we will be competing on more fronts next year. So unless we prioritise the league and rest players in Europe, or unless we sign about ten players worthy of the first team, it will take a monumental effort to be so close to the league next season. Impossible? No. Unlikely? Yes.

I agree, this season would suggest we would. But given how many false dawns we've had the last twenty years, it would be amazing if we got it so right again.

Next season is the one that will really define how good a job Rodgers really has done.

City and Chelsea have really roared ahead of us this season with all that spending, haven't they? Spending is necessary but it absolutely is not an automatic guarantee of success Yes, we'll be competing on more fronts, and because of that we'll attract better players. Get a grip FFS.

That's my point, they haven't. But Chelsea will be a striker or two for about £50m each, and City will probably sign Messi or something. They will spend even more to ensure that a season like this doesn't happen again. They'll look to improve and increase the gap.

It represents a very good chance of success though, if invested well and in world class talent as they both have done. We will need to attract players at the level of Suarez etc as I have said, and about 4 or 5 of them, but that will be difficult. There's not many of those around for about £15m. If you don't acknowledge it will definitely be harder next season than this - a season where we've been amazing, but still might fall short - then you're burying your head in the sand a bit.

As far as the last 20 years are concerned - that was then, this is now. We're under new management and I really and truly don't see the relevance to the future of harking back in that way.

As for next season, that will obv.be hugely important but I'd take issue with "define". It'll be a significant waymarker but IMHO no more than that. Phrases about marathons and sprints come to mind.

Of course it's always harder to maintain success after initially bursting on to the scene. What I was taking issue with was your apparent assumption (and Gerry's) that the chances are against us. "Difficult", which it certainly will be, does not equal "unlikely" and I genuinely don't think the latter is true.

Hope I'm wrong, but I think we need top level players in the summer to be back here again next summer, added to the fact we need more and better quality depth. We have to get every signing right, make sure it's of the right quality, cope with added pressure and fixtures, and catch up to an improved City, Chelsea and even Arsenal and United. I think we'll finish top 4 next season, but I don't think we'll threaten for the league as we have done this.

Call me naive, people keep saying that FFP is going to hurt us, but aren't we one of the ones who are going to benefit from it most? We have large revenues which will increase even more now we're back in the champions league.

It's all bullshit. We may well benefit from it, but the likes of City and Chelsea won't be reprimanded either.

It's clearly aimed at keeping the big clubs big & preventing others from breaking into that top elite.

If, IF, we get in the CL next year when the revenue doubles we should benefit as we'll have that plus bigger match day earnings the season after, which will help cement us in the top 4/5 clubs in the country.

If there's any karma in the world at work then both city & Chelsea will miss out & have to spend like made trying to get back in whilst real clubs benefit. Won't happen unfortunately.

Football is on its way to ruin, I think. Not literally, but from a purely romantic standpoint.

I was saying before the match that Maureen's plan would be the same as I'm their Tottenham game... bore the opposition to death until one of them falls over. For spurs it was Vertongen and us Gerrard.

It's an actual tactic that works. Makes me wanna smoke crack.

Shit the bed. It's true.

According to Diego Torres, at Real Madrid, Mourinho came up with a code for big games, particularly away from home: “1. The game is won by the team who commits fewer errors. 2. Football favours whoever provokes more errors in the opposition. 3. Away from home, instead of trying to be superior to the opposition, it’s better to encourage their mistakes. 4. Whoever has the ball is more likely to make a mistake. 5. Whoever renounces possession reduces the possibility of making a mistake. 6. Whoever has the ball has fear. 7. Whoever does not have it is thereby stronger.”

Apparently we have an outstanding manager, so none of that matters (until things go wrong)
