Benteke - BOOOOOO the puns

We've let Gerrard and Johnson go thats about 240k of the wage bill.

Added Firmino, Clyne and Benteke who are probably on 80+60+90, so thats roughly the same.
Added Milner who is on 150k and Ings and Origi are probably on about 40k each.

Our net spend is about 35 mill now. We'll have to give Enrique away, Borini will leave for 5-6 mill and Balotelli will at best leave on loan due to his wages and lack of interest.

I think we might see one more signing. Someone like Digne on loan or if someone becomes available late in the window that will strengthen us.
I still feel we should sell Lucas and buy a top class midfielder but that probably wont happen.

A net spend of around 40 mill + (adding Ings 7 mill and Milner 5 mill signing on fee) without CL isnt bad but it might not be enough to get us into top 4.

Do we think thats it now for signings?
Weve only spent about 25m net.
Benteke 32m
Firmino 29m
Clyne 12m
Gomez 3.5m

Minus
Raheem 49m
Coates 4m
Aspas 4.5m

25 million is a nice wedge for a team not in Champion's League Looks like our wage bill won't have changed an awful lot when you take into account Johnson and Gerrard leaving but Benteke and Firmino are probably on good money. Even if we're not happy with signings you'd be reasonably happy with that as a net spend.

On getting rid of Andy Carroll

[article]My thinking was that, when you play with a target man, he becomes the focal point of your team, so everything has to be set up around the big guy. Sometimes you get sucked into doing it more direct, and clearly, with my history as a coach, I don’t work that way.
Removing that means you have to connect your game better through the lines, through the thirds. Possession is not good enough on its own, you have to penetrate. That’s what Luis does. He is always on the move, in spaces and in behind defenders[/article]

There was a culture of hoofing the ball forward at that time, suffice to say that's long gone and this is no longer a concern. Anyway, it's hardly like Sturridge is small.

By your argument we dont need a goalscorer as Suarez got us 30+ goals a few season ago....

What the fuck are you on about?

We've just signed four strikers, but yeah.

As for your really shit generalisation. Allen won't be playing much and, quelle surprise your jumping on the retarded "big lump upfront" argument over Benteke.

Have you actually watched him play? His best season for Villa was when they played more or less as a counter-attacking team, which is more or less what we do too alot of the time. He can play as a target man when you need him to.

Under Rafa, Houllier, and recently, there was always two or three magic players. Players that could turn a game.

I don't really see that in this team.

And I can't for the life of me understand why Henderson is captain. He's bang average most of the time, and occasionally very good. Occasionally.

I see so many players with potential. but that's all

That being said, the quality of signing, while not World class, is pretty decent, and it's not 2010 territory thank heavens.

Only if he gets to the standards you claim he's already at.

He's not really claiming he's at a particular standard, he saying the claims that he's "bang average" most of the time, are nonsense. Which they are. Statistically he's as influential as any midfielder in the country in his position, there's certainly not many I can think of who weigh in with as many assists and he keeps getting a few goals.

Also this idea that we had "two or three magic players", well we had maybe two with Rafa in Torres & Gerrard, and we've had three more recently under Rodgers, with Suarez, Sturridge and Coutinho.

We still have Coutinho, Benteke will get important goals, we still have Sturridge, Firmino is potentially a match winner. I think overall we're probably as well balanced as we were in the season before last, perhaps even more so, without the 30 goal a season player (which are difficult to come by), but we certainly look like we can spread the burden of goals a bit more between a few players.

Highest goals and assists total of our entire squad last year, from central midfield, and you guys reckon he's the problem?

No, I don't reckon he's a problem. There is a middle ground on this. He doesn't have to be our next superstar.

He's a decent player and adds to the team, but he's not up there with the likes of our previous captains, and is unlikely to ever be that standard.

No ones is saying he's the new Steven Gerrard, but he's by far the best player for the job.
