My point was win or lose you cant tell anythung at this point..... give it at least 5 games into the season yeah?

More mental not cannier Peter.

That's how I'm described when I suggest doing the above.

No, you treat it like it's the rule of thumb, it's not, there are different scenario's for different players, the standard philosophy shouldn't be "sell a player when they're at their peak price", obviously in some cases it's valid, in others it's not and it's also with the benefit of hindsight. We've been trying to rebuild in recent years so we haven't really been in a position to sell players that had been performing well, it's ok saying it a few years down the line when things haven't progressed. Reina was good enough to play for a title challenging side, we were chasing CL football and trying to keep hold of our better players to aid building and keep the attraction, it's a difficult position to be in.

my original post has nothing to do with our pre season form , i don't give a shit about that . It was just seeing the players , their styles etc again reminded me how average so many of them are .

So you really expect a vast improvement from most this team ?

I think January to May's form gives us hope, if you look at how we performed with Coutinho and Sturridge, if Aspas and Alberto can make a step up and we add one or two more players, then who knows? I'm also excited about the prospect of Ibe and Sterling contributing, not to mention Wisdom. I know there's a long way to go, we've still got several plodders and the big boys are adding BIG players, but that's the same every year, if we can get our shit together early then hopefully we'll push on from last season.

I think to a large extent our problem has been that we've been chasing CL football when it was never really realistic. Actually that's not true, is it? It probably would've been realistic without Kennoli blowing £40-50m on dross.

What I really mean is that it's probably not realistic to attempt both short term CL qualification AND long term growth on our budget. If we wanted top 4 we should've gone all out for it within 3 seasons. But once focus switched last summer to under 23s we should have realised that short term CL qualification was very unlikely and seen that players like Reina, Johnson, and Skrtel weren't really of much use. I hope we're more clear sighted from now on.

Well thats the point with buying youth, you are hopefully nurturing them to improve over the next couple of seasons. Sure we will be lucky if 50% or more of this team turn out to play for this club hundreds of times over the next couple of years.

But to be honest I do have hope in Rodgers plan, the 2nd half of last season showed a progression in style which was a definite improvement on the style of play from Kenny or Hodgson in previous seasons.

Who is it in particular you think look average?

It's like you're either average or world class. No in-between.

Enrique, one of the best fullback in the prem last season, average?
Johnson, England international, average?
Agger, Danish captain, wanted by top clubs, average?

It's like the way Skrtel was one of the best defenders in England a year ago, now he's a liability. It is pretty tiresome tbf. I think we can put out a good squad of 18 right now, and tbh I still think we're likely to see at least an alternative to Mkhitaryan come in, regardless of Suarez leaving. With Reina gone I think we now have a negative spend, so until I see a credible report that that £20m budget didn't exist I'm gonna keep hoping it'll get spent.

Considering how we improved and played the last half of the season we should be encouraged. BR will implement the way he wants us to play and shift a couple of players. Of course there are question marks but we should aim and believe in a top 4 spot, no doubt.

You lot are like those, who after preparing their fantasy teams, continue to go back again and again, scrutinize every single detail, click on every single button just to be sure they haven't missed out anything. And even then, after all the exhaustive scrutiny, they still won't log off and continue to loiter about and finally after a lengthy idling about, snap out of their daze and resign themselves to their mundane day-to-day activity in the real world. And then they realized they've just wasted an hour meddling about their fantasy team.

In other words, stop fretting about the team. Take a step backwards and get out ! It's summertime. Pre-season. Friendlies. Who flipping cares how we play !!

That's alright for you. Some of us don't work for a living.

We're fielding two different teams each game, each team made up of different players from the previous friendlies. We've not even seen what you would expect to be our starting 11 in action together yet. It's a bit early to say we're shite already.

Be honest with me mate, outside of this site - you're a chirpy, lovely guy (or gal)? I can't believe how fucking suicidal some of you people are ...

Downing is the epitome of the drivel we have to contend with; the longer he remains the further he will drag us down.

it's got nothing to do with being depressed or suicidal . It's me being realistic and looking at what i see infront of me . i hope to be wrong but for most of these players i just can't see them reaching the heights i believe we require (although i'm probably aiming too high to think we should be at least a top 4 team and competing ).

So the flip side question from me to you would be - Do you bury your head in the sand and "hope" outside of this site also ? i don't want hope and to see if things pan out . I want signs we are really going to make it . I guess the debate is what one person is happy with as progress.

The first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem. Until then you are hopeless(Pun Intended)

Being a football fan is about hoping. I buried my head in the sand on May 25th, 2005 until Dmish wrote 'we can win this' and then hope was there. What's the FUCKING POINT of believing you club can reach the heights if you can't get behind them as they push for the goal. Last year's 2nd half was very very positive. We're as good a team as that team - with a hungry Spanish striker and highly rated Belgian int'l keeper. Yah, I wish we could be excellent and win everything like the 70s and 80s, but I HOPE this will come too ...

And yes, I'm in general an optimistic person ... I'd rather hope things can get better - especially in the world we live in - than wallow in the depression of what we see day in, day out in the news.

I did see there thinking christ how the f*ck will this lot break down any prem teams next season.

Having said that if we started our (sorry Ryan) best 11 then this would have crushed Victory

--------------------------------Jones--------------------------------------

GlenJo------------Skittles----------Agger--------------------Jose
---------------------Gerrard---------Henderson-----------------------
Sterling--------------------------------------------------------Coutinho
--------------------------------Suarez---------------------------------
-------------------------------Sturridge------------------------------------

No it wouldnt. It would have played at the same, slow meandering pace as last night's 11 did. And not bothered it's arse to chase down Victory when they had the ball.

Friendlies are largely a waste of time because there is zero urgency. The 11 on the ground is largely inconsequential.

We created as many chances with Suarez on for 18 mins than we did in the prior 72.

A full strength side while it may still have been a lazy run out they would have ripped through that victory side.
