bang average

watching us earlier just reminded me how many average players we have in our squad and to be honest unless we have a pretty amazing end to the transfer window i can't see us getting above 5th or 6th.

Bar one or two there are major question marks over nearly all our players , it's a massive season for so many , make or break . Agger, skrtel , downing , henderson , lucas , allen , borini , enrique , johnson , even sterling to a degree...no excuses , they have to improve .

And don't get me started on our midfield , if rodgers really thinks it's good enough then god help us .

I disagree. I'm not normally optimistic, at least I don't think so, but I am this season. I think Aspas, Toure and Mignolet will play a lot and two of them will probably be successful. Ibe and Sterling will have great seasons. Coutinho and Sturridge will be devastating together. We're also going to sign another three players or so, including a 20 goals a season player. Henderson will continue his upward trajectory, Gerrard will stay fit, and little Joey Allen will start playing a bit more like he did in his first few weeks at the club.

We're either going to be in or very close to top 4.
We're going to have some great victories over big teams this year
and we're going to thrash the living shit out of some bottom half teams.

I really hope you're right gene. I really do.

Great to see the non stop moaning starts in July this year.
Its like Christmas,it starts a week earlier every year.

I think you're being optimistic Gene.

Pre-sesason, Henderson hasn't shown anything and Allen has been totally anonymous. I think they will never be at a top level that we are aspiring to. Not sure Lucas will ever reach the heights he once glimpsed and maybe that was just a purple patch as he hadn't exactly set the world alight apart from then.

I'm disappointed with Allen as he looked good when he first joined but has never recreated that form.

My problem is that they're all squad players at best, and we've had way too many of them over the years.

BR confirmed that players coming in will go straight into the starting XI so I'm pretty confident that he take us to the next level to challenge for a top 4 spot. Despite the oppositions, we haven't conceded yet and the young players are doing well. That's a good thing.

How many years have we been saying the Man United team is bang average? Van Persie aside, their best player last season was the bang average Carrick.

I think there's reason for hope. Will this '£20m' net spend materialise? I don't know, but the people who were saying it are usually reliable. We clearly DID want Mkhitaryan, but was it dependent on Suarez going? Again, the jury's out. I think the evidence is probably against that: FSG have shown before that they're willing to spend with the expectation that money will come back in later. Is the interest in a serious alternative to Mkh in Bernard genuine? Again, reported by usually reliable people.

Basically, I think if we end up spending that £20m or so net, then I think we'll be in a reasonable state to challenge for the top 4, if probably missing out. Suarez I would just sell tbh, £40m to Madrid, or £50m to a direct challenger like Arsenal, because I think the likelihood is that we're NOT going to get CL for another couple of seasons, the main reason being that a LOT of our best players are young or very young: and so I'm only cautiously optimistic about the short term, but very much so in the longer term. The following players will all still be young in 3 or 4 years, and all probably better than now:

Mignolet
Kelly
Wisdom
Henderson
Allen
Sterling
Ibe
Coutinho
Luis Alberto
Sturridge

There are another 10 or so who have a good chance of being involved in that squad already at the club. That has to be the plan. I don't see any other way.

For someone who isn't normally optimistic this is pretty optimistic.

well if you think a pre season is going to magically change all these players then you are off your rockers .

We have a few average players who don't look like they can do much better, but we've got a few who've seriously coasted through the last season or too, they need to improve sharpish, particularly Johnson, Lucas, Enrique and Skrtel - all of whom are so called "peak age".

This is where I'm chillingly in tune with Ross, but Johnson, Reina, and Skrtel are all players we should've sold a year or two ago when we could've got more than £50m for them. We could've spent that money on mostly young players, and the chances are that that £55m or so would've appreciated to more like £70m now. Instead it's depreciated to, what? £25m?

We've got to be much much cannier.

More mental not cannier Peter.

That's how I'm described when I suggest doing the above.

we've been playing glorified pub teams

We did that a few years ago and conceded 3 goals in every game, yet we still had a thread full of lemmings who thought were going to win the league, people watching us win 3 games and decide we might finish 4th is not such a stretch

Scum have lost 2 out of 3 pre season games so surely they'll finish 8th come may next year!
