Ban them, suspend them. If a referee make a big mistake then he should be banned. Being a PL referee must be the easiest job in the world. You can be shit year in year out and still keep your job as a referee in the PL.

Stop protect them. They should also face the consequences when they don't do a good enough job.

The referees in the PL is a joke and the main reason is that they are allowed to be shit and nothing happen.

It should also be allowed just like it is in the NFL to throw a red flag and make a challenge against a decision. Not every decision but for example if it is a penalty or not.

A referee was murdered on the football pitch just moments after he showed a player a red card in Argentina.
Cesar Flores, 48, was shot three times, in the head, chest and neck, by the attacker who is still at large and being hunted by authorities.
Another player was also shot in the chest but survived - 25-year-old Walter Zarate was rushed to hospital but is said to be recovering.
The incident, which took place in Campo de la Bribera, the provincial capital of Cordoba, Argentina, on Sunday, saw the man run onto the pitch and pull a gun from his backpack as the game was being played.
"It all happened during the match," police spokesman told the Efe news agency. "We don't know what happened with the referee but the player was angry and went to get his gun and killed him."

Refs do get punished if they make major mistakes. There's not enough consistency there, but most of them do suffer the consequences. And if you want refs who don't make any mistakes then you'll be waiting a long time. Personally I'm all for technology to help them out: if there's any doubt, let them consult an off-field ref who can look at video footage, as in cricket. And if a ref makes a glaring error they can just beep his wristwatch to alert him there and then. The argument against, that it'll take too long, is nonsense, as would be proven if someone timed the on-field protests that refs have to deal with when there IS controversy. If anything, it would save time and cut out the swarms of players around the ref and his assistants.

Rugby league is the perfect example. It works. Everyone gets on with it.

Takes 30 seconds max, to get a correct decision.

It would also cut the diving if they did introduce video refs.

You are never going to cut out diving, etc, and people buying soft free kicks. You cant go the video ref for everything.

But certainly. if the Ref thinks something is a foul in the area, a handball, a bad tackle, and is considering giving a major decision which will then totally affect the game (Penalties and Red Cards), they should be able to go to a video panel, who can quickly review it, and advise the correct outcome. It would take up to 30 seconds to sort it.

Offsides are a problem. Is there a way around this? Instead of linesmen, have a panel dedicated to watching for offsides. The Ref carries on play as normal, and if offside, the panel could tell within 5 secs. They buzz the Ref's watch, and play comes back?

How far do you take it? I dunno.

This is the way to go;

The German Football Association has expressed its interest in testing video replay technology at the highest level domestically if the game's rulemakers give the idea the thumbs up in March.

The International Football Association Board (IFAB), at its interim meeting last week, recommended trialling video replays to help referees with questionable goals, penalties, red cards and cases of mistaken identity. A final ruling will be made at IFAB's main session in Cardiff.

DFB referees chief Herbert Fandel said trials could include matches in the top two Bundesliga divisions.

"We have a great interest to be in the front row when this pilot project begins," Fandel told the DFB website. "That is why we are eagerly awaiting the final decision.

"As early as November last year the (DFB) referee commission sent as letter to FIFA saying very clearly that Germen referees not only want to be part of possible tests but want to play a leading role."

IFAB approved the use of goalline technology in 2012 and since then there have been growing calls from players and coaches to extend that to other contentious areas of the game. Initially there was strong resistence from FIFA but world football's governing body is now softening is stance.

The Dutch are also keen to use video technology in live games and everything now hinges on the March meeting of IFAB which comprises FIFA and the four British associations.

If the Ref misses a really bad tackle which is worthy of a Red, they can also review this, and let him know. So what if the player gets sent off 2 mins after the original tackle. He is still getting punished and the outcome is the correct one.

Its wound me up for a while this now. I've been watching Rugby League for 10 years and its so fucking easy and brilliantly done in that sport. I cant believe it hasnt worked its way over to football yet.

Offsides could easily be fixed with modern tech. I'm sure they could have a system of sensors and tiny microchips in the players' shirts, plus one in the ball. It would be able to tell instantly if a player was offside, although they might need to rework the "interfering with play" rule to make it more workable.

What if he scores a goal in those 2 minutes? Not a reason to not send him off, just an interesting conundrum, and something for managers to complain about
