Liverpool legend blasts ‘waste of space’ Mario Balotelli

Former Anfield hero Mark Lawrenson, who won five English league titles, three League Cups, one FA Cup and one European Cup with Liverpool, has launched a brutal verbal attack on Mario Balotelli.
Former defender Lawro, now best known for his role as a BBC pundit, described the Italian striker as a waste of space after watching him produce another forgettable cameo performance in Sunday’s 0-0 draw with Blackburn.
Balotelli has scored just four goals in 24 games in all competitions since we signed him for £16m from AC Milan in August.
Lawro is clearly not a fan…

He told BBC Radio 5Live: “Forget about Mario Balotelli. He is an absolute waste of time. He shouldn’t be anywhere near this team.

“I can see why Brendan Rodgers threw him on today as he might just create something, but 99 times out of 100 he will let you down.”

Anyone disagree?

Lawrenson has been a waste of space since he retired playing, has no passion for commentary and is has a become a negative voice in all areas.

Im not a massive fan of the 25 yard shot that goes 25 yards over the bar, followed by the look of dismay, which appears to be his signature move.

He offers about the same if not more to a game than the lazer, but everyone loves the lazer?
I'd swap him for Ings, but I'd also swap lambert and Borini for Ings.
I think he's got so much potential I just don't think anyone is capable of getting it out if him.
We'll do well to get 10mill for him in the summer

He's continuing a great LFC tradition that includes Hamman and Agger. It's odd about Lawrenson; I know people who deal with him who say he's a genuinely nice bloke, but you'd never believe it from watching him on TV. Aside from his beloved Preston, he's relentlessly negative and can't wait to have a moan about us, even though the only reason he's in a job is because of his association with LFC. This latest contribution is hardly welcome or fair seeing as Balotelli has been trying to improve in recent appearances and has hardly ever been used to play to his strengths.

One is a 20 year old who is adjusting to a new league in a new country, yet works his arse off, with reduced or lesser end product than you'd like.

One is a highly temperamental player with huge wages, an attitude issue some of the time & he has played in this league & country before so has no such excuse, yet has much reduced or lesser end product than you'd like.

If you don't see why it's better to stick with the former rather than the latter then you have issues.

Balotelli has been looking good lately in his substitute appearances. Yesterday he was able to out-muscle the Blackburn defenders, which nobody else was able to do. He may well have scored from a cross, had a Blackburn defender not grabbed a fistful of his shirt and pulled him back. One of several occasions when Mr. Marriner saw it as inappropriate to award a nailed-on penalty.

What are his strengths?

moaning
being moody
making you worry that he might get sent off for something stupid
generating media stories about himself
convincing many people he's a world class football player
pulling skanks

*penalties - i forgot about that

He's been looking good by comparison with his own previous performances, which provide a pretty low baseline. There have been some good touches from him but none of them have ultimately amounted to anything - he'll play a nice ball to somebody, get the return pass and blaze it into Row X. No benefit we're remotely likely to derive from having him around will be worth the risk. Lawrenson's mistimed intervention doesn't alter that.

I think people are being unfair on his performance yesterday, apart from his customary dreadful 45 yard shot that ended up on Mars, I thought he put himself about well, played some good passes, held it up and started getting Sturridge into the game. Prior to that Sturridge was either feeding off scraps or too bone idle to work for it. Bit of an odd game to try to make him the scapegoat, considering Lallana, Sturridge, Markovic and a few others were piss poor.

And I agree with Mors to a degree, Markovic is getting an easy ride based on a spell of about 4 games where looked like finding some form, which was about 2 months ago.

I dunno...i always feel like he has a ticker problem. His heart is not driving him to be the best he can be. And I doubt Rodgers can change that all that much ....

He not only offers extremely little to the team, but his presence detracts from those around him. He is taking up a spot of someone who could be making runs, running at players, getting in dangerous areas but he just jogs around trying to get himself to that spot about 30 yards out to the left of the box to smash the ball as hard as he can.

Surely no one wants him in the team? He is awful and it makes things harder for others. In rowing we would call him a handbrake and refer to his seat as the sandwich seat.

There is folklore that in a seat racing event a team had a bet that the boat would go faster with a sandwich on the seat of one of the guys instead of having his weight in the boat as they thought he didn't pull his weight. The boat went faster with 7 rather than 8 and so now 'sandwich seat' is a classic put down. For me this sums up Balo.

He's quick, has a good first touch, can score and takes up great positions in the box.

Unfortuantely he's lazy, greedy, makes poor selfish decisions, zero work rate, not a team player, zero determination, immature, plays with his head down, shoots from stupid positions and will never work at Liverpool.

I still can't believe he's on our books.

Called it as soon as we were linked that he would be a massive failure and lets face it, if I can see it anyone can.

He might be useful if we weren't so shit with our free kicks. He does draw quite abit of fouls on him.

Pretty sure we will get rid at the end of the season.

Just depends who the takers are ... maybe a team like Wolfsburg would take him possibly for 10-15M ...

They got cash to splash & are looking to make big name signings.

Maybe that can work. They were silly enough to pick up Bendtner afterall.

Haha that's true.

But they have recruited well ... and have pulling power for sure, they convinced Luis Gustavo to join them instead of Arsenal.

They definitely need more forwards - I think Bas Dost & Bendtner are their only real out and out strikers.

When I met him he was a twat. But that's just one meeting on one day of course. A mate of mine who works in the media in Liverpool says the word is he is incredibly bitter with the club for the way they both treated his achilles injury and then treated him after it was clear he was permanently crocked. How true that is who knows.

Calling Ballotelli lazy is itself lazy stereotyping.

It really isn't. I think people have noticed he runs a bit more than he used to, but that just moves him away from rock bottom of the lazy scale. He very very rarely even breaks into a sprint. He's an athlete and quick movement is a key part of how our team plays and he doesn't do that.

I've noticed lately he has started saying 'us' when talking about Liverpool, something I never really noticed him doing before.
