AS: Agger is central figure in Barca's plans

All these potential deals for players like Agger and Suarez etc, for me, basically come down to whether them leaving is going to make a really significant difference to our chances of getting CL next season. In isolation the case is clear: we'd be mad not to take £15m+ for him. But the problem is that for years now our situation has left us with two clear but risky *and* absolutely incompatible strategies for getting back to where we were: building via CL money or via long term development. And what's worse is we seem to have been caught between the two and got nowhere.

We definitely went for the CL option in the past - Firstly when Hodgson was appointed and all his signings were the experienced options who would supposedly fit in right away allowing us to challenge. It was never a realistic option because we didnt have enough money to fund what was needed to get us back up there.

Secondly - when Kenny and Commoli were given licence to spend. When they were arguably given enough to make that jump but simply bought badly.

Both of those efforts at pushing for the CL were based on the same core that we have now, which is simply older and more expensive and no better than it was.

Reina and Carragher are gone from that core now, and I'd happily let the rest of it go for the right money (Agger, Skrtel, Johnson, Lucas)

We could then build a good team with that plus the Suarez money.

Sell for 18 and buy that Zouma lad of St. Ettienne for 10 to play alongside Papa. Two mean units in defence. A wall of ebony and ivory if you will.

Not our entire back line (which would include FBs) just our two CBs who don't exactly work brilliantly together anyway. Papa & Kolo plus A.N. Other good CB with a good part of the 20M+ Agger dosh ? Looks OK on paper and certainly not weaker than Agger+Skrtel.

It's weaker than Agger and Skrtel at full tilt. When they were firing on all cylinders a couple of seasons ago, there was no better combo around.

Well Skrtel hasn't been all that for quite a while now and TBH I hate it when Agger runs all the way up to and into the opposition's box (mostly without any result) leaving our defence exposed, which sometimes does have a (negative) result, so I'm not against losing either/or/both if the price is right.

*awaits Wrath of KHL*

Meanwhile twitter rumours of a 2m loan fee agreed with Napoli for Skrtel with 10m option to buy.

It states that he's now Barca's main defensive target and that he is seen as a central figure in their plans. Or thereabouts. Sport states that a deal is close.

Quoted figures in the range of £17M-£18M

That article states

"Agger, 28, out of contract with Liverpool on June 30, 2014, so that the club is confident that the cost of the operation would not be excessive. "

Agger signed a new contract till 2016.

We should just have one *Daniel Agger Linked" thread where we post/discuss these rumors that come up what feels like once a week.

I was on an Inter board once looking for thoughts on the Coutinho transfer, and they had players organized by sections. Current players/Coaches, and Former were seperated and each had their own thread. Was certainly interesting seeing their posts regarding Coutinho over the course of 5 years or so from when they were first linked to him as a 16YO.

Ross would never allow 5 yr old threads to be kept alive.

Well you can understand why, once they get to that age they're past it and aren't worth investing any time in.

I beg to differ mate.

A good example the "One to watch: Eriksen" thread.

Why close it? Everything I know about him I had put in there, and I could re-use that same thread over and over again to post updates related to the player, rumors, goals, etc., instead of having to open new threads on the same subject all the time pissing certain posters off. Same posters who thinks he's the most boring topic on here could just stay out of it too. Win win.

I understand that some threads goes awol after a while and needs to be shut, but when it's specifically player related it's simply a really bad idea to shut them down just for new ones to pop up when a new story, goal or whatever could be of interest to some.

El Mundo Deportivo today claims that FC Barcelona have started negotiations with us and Chelsea over Agger and Luiz. They only need one, but they are afraid they'll both prove difficult to buy why they are betting on both horses.

It is expected that Vice President Bartomeu and director of sports Sanllehi from the Catalonia club will fly to England soon to strike a deal, as new manager 'Tata' has demanded that his squad is assembled in good time.

But I never read that thread in the first place, now its 70 pages long I certainly wont. And whats the point in it anyway? He isn't our player and is never going to be. Why not have one for Gundogan or Santos or Fabio? Who gives a shit?

If we indeed sell I believe we'll get in excess of £20M, closing in on £25M - Barca do seem desperate, Agger is at the peak of his career age-wise and proved last Season that he is in better physical condition than ever.

I know people like Ryan keeps on telling us he's wank - or average at best - that's just not right however as most of us know, and I really do fear for our future if we keep on selling our best players when at their prime.

PS I am not crying.

I like to get new info from posters such as Pesam, Rurik, Roopy, Keni, gkmacca et all who knows their footy and watches leagues and players I don't.

No worries if you don't care about it but it's a football forum so I don't think it's that odd really.

The fact that we even by now know we have actually been scouting this player loads will perhaps ignite some posters interest in him further and then they'd perhaps appreciate some back-ground info from others whom have seen him play. I know I do and even if you don't I struggle to see how it would harm you or others that doesn't care in any way.

We don't have to agree upon what we find interesting either, I personally just keep out of threads that I find boring , hysterical whatever.

Oncy has a great idea - if anyone finds a new talent in their country that few of us know about, then start a thread and introduce him to us ... That's what the FOOTBALL forum is about ... Talking footy.
