If English press want to ‘kill’ someone they do it. I remember that Rafa Benitez could do nothing right for Liverpool in their eyes.

“Everything he's done or said was made look to bad in the newspapers. I don't understand English very well, but even I could see it."

I know I'm still in the mad minority but I'd like to see him back at this club in some managerial capacity some day

Rafa wasn't without fault but he clearly wasn't treated well byt the English press.

Rotation policy...

didnt he also say today that his new philosophy is that he would be happy living anywhere as long as he has more money, if that isnt the precursor to a move to some areshole club who will throw bags of cash at him

"Facts !"

The press hid like bitches.

*waits for the "he should have kept his mouth shut" brigade*

It's funny, because he did what alot of people haven't had the bollocks to do, he came out and called Fergie a cunt (more or less) and alot of people applauded him for it, but then as with anything in the media over here, it was great for a couple of weeks and then they used it as a stick to twat him with.

That said, it did coincide with a down turn in form, whether it was coincidence no one will ever really know but from there on it seemed like his press ramblings over shadowed the club, even though in hindsight he was probably right about alot of things, he didn't do himself any favours when moaning about a lack of money and stuff. You can't do shit like that when your recent transfer record (with a reasonable amount of wedge) leaves alot to be desired.

If he'd added quality on quality and we were missing one or two players then you could understand, but the players he bought over the two seasons had little impact on us finishing second and then did fuck all to help build on that season, if anything they made us go backwards.

He should've kept his mouth shut for two reasons:

1 - It sounds bitter coming from the losing party (which is how it ended up). Any speech should've waited until we were in a position to talk and that was only ever going to happen after a league win.

2 - He never had the personality to pull of that kind of stunt. He looked awkward and uncomfortable in his own skin and when you're trying to bring people over to your side that's not really going to cut it.

Rafa was shabbily treated by the press, called Ferguson out the the twat he is and had he not exposed G&T's financial problems the club could have gone under. When Kenny decides to retire he'd be my 1st choice.

that second point is the crux for me. such an attack should've been made subtly and almost off-handedly, instead he came across like the pressure of fergie's sniping had got to him.

I understand that view, but I don't agree with it. I don't think anything but a head-on assault would even have been noticed. As it was, there were (and to some extent there still are) more critical references to the old sod in the media now than there were before Rafa got stuck in, and he's been fined more often in a shorter space of time than he was before. The effects haven't been earth-shattering, but they've been there.

He never deserved it Themn.

At least he had the balls to defend the club against the bully like Fergie. Do you think Rafa would have said nothing when Fergie called Torres a diver after Nani dived all over the place in the very same match? And accuse Suarez again this year?

But he could easily have said the same thing in a much less earnest and paranoid manner.

In theory, maybe. In practice I suspect Rafa's command of English - improved though it was by then - wouldn't quite have been up to that.

come on, it wasn't his english that made him produce a charge list like some haunted obsessive. i liked that he was feisty and confrontational, but the way he went about that speech was always going to expose him to some ridicule.

I don't think it was the main reason for the sheer bluntness of Rafa's presentation, which was mainly due to the fact that Rafa had already tried to work through the LMA and was massively frustrated at having drawn a total blank there. However, I do think the kind of slicker approach which, reasonably enough, you'd have preferred to see would have been hard for someone whose English wasn't absolutely 100%.
