Thanks for that last soul crushing piece of information.
I know.

Even at that time I couldnt believe we turned it down.... he was rated sooo highly by everyone, including Juve, I have no idea why we rejected the offer... easily the best defender in Serie A alongside Thiago Silva of Milan.
And Gilardino, obv.

We were offered Chiellini?

When?
It was early on in 2007.

Juve were more concerned with renewing the contracts of the established stars, and Chiellini was most definitely on the outer.

He was offered to us for 8M but we only offered 5M.

A real shame we didn't sign him, and instead went so hard after Heinze.

Perhaps, but what's to say he too wouldn't have fallen victim to the curse of the italian import?
Yeah perhaps, but at 8M - why not? ... wouldn't have been a big financial loss if it didn't work out because any of the top sides in Italy would have been prepared to meet that figure if we wanted to get rid of him.

We did pay £8m for an Italian defender and that, most certainly, didn't have a happy ending.

Roopy slightly off topic and not one for Liverpool but what is your first impressions on 18-year-old defender Frederik Sørensen who's quite amazingly played a lot for Juve of late as RB? (Loaned him in Summer before he'd even had a look in for minnows Lyngby in the Danish SuperLeague).

I've only seen him play a couple of times but he's looked surprisingly up for the task whenever I've seen him. Big and fast and quite strong on the ball. Have you seen enough of him to make an early judgement on the lad?

Still too early to judge him, although he is promising player going by the handful of games I've seen him play.

What I have noticed is that he seems to be capable of playing anywhere across the defence ... Chielini & Bonucci are quality and definite starters, but the other 2 spots, for me, are up for grabs.

His rivals for these 2 spots are - Legrottaglie, Motta, Grygera & Rinuado - I rate none of these defenders, but they do have valuable experience at the top level - and given that Champions League football is a top priority for Juventus, it's quite risky to have Sorensen playing. The key to becoming a better player is of course getting game time, my only concern for this lad that he won't get the chance once Motta, Grygera have sorted out their injury problems. Perhaps going out on loan would be of greater benefit.

With Juve you have to be careful about getting excited about young players.

They've not had a very good success rate with converting talent into the real deal. A lot of people were saying the following Juve players were the next big thing:

Manuel Blasi - defensive mid now at Napoli ... was supposed to be their version of Pirlo
Nicola Legrottaglie - defensive mid/defender ... everyone said he was the direct replacement for Pessotto
Seb. Giovinco - attacking midfielder ... the next Nedved/Del Piero
Raffaele Palladino - striker ... Trezeguet's replacement.

The only youngster who has fulfilled his promise is Georgio Chiellini - who I might add was offered to Liverpool on numerous ocassions during his earlier years as a left back.

Much appreciated mate.

(sorry for the late respons, I've been smothered in Christmas)

What little I've seen of Chiellini I've never been impressed. He seems to be living off his ability on Footy Manager/Fifa. That's just my take on it, of course.

Even so, if that's true, Benitez is a useless lump sometimes! Chiellini? Nah. Heinze and Dossena? YES PLEASE!

I despise Juventus, but Chiellini is a champion player and a warrior in defence.

Along with Buffon and Del Piero, he is the type of identity that Juventus needs to compete for honours.

I agree in that he is sometimes off his game, but he's not playing alongside players that match his quality, and the quality that Juventus has had in the past.

The likes of Cannavaro, Tudor, Ferrara were blessed with playing alongside a team of champions - whereas Chiellini is playing alongside has-beens in Grosso, Grygera, Legrottaglie... & inept defensive mids in Sissoko & Melo.

He's right to praise Del Neri - the man knows how to get the best out of midfielders like Aquilani.

He was the man to take what many considered average midfielders - the likes of Eugenio Corini, Simone Perrotta, Franceschini & Simone Barone - and made them hot property during his tenure at Chievo Verona.

His assist yesterday:

JUVENTUS-INTER 1-0 | SKY Calcio HD | 25 Giornata 1°Gol Matri 13/2/2011

Del Neri reserved special praise for his defenders, as Frederik Sorensen provided the crucial assist and silenced Samuel Eto’o.

“A kid who marks Eto’o that way has to be applauded
. Barzagli has also impressed me, as with Giorgio Chiellini in the left-back role. Now we’ve got to improve on the flanks.â€

Juve backline was: Sorensen, Barzagli, Bonucci, Chiellini

Aquilani played the entire match.

Cheers Binny!

Sørensen lost Eto'o late in the game and he should've scored really. Otherwise did really well. I like the look of their new striker too. Matri.

Aquilani or Pirlo? Juve decides
Juventus are wondering whether it would be better to sign Andrea Pirlo from Milan than make Alberto Aquilani's move from Liverpool permanent.

Aquilani has impressed during his loan spell, but Juventus are seriously beginning to have qualms about paying the €16.5m option included in the deal.

The 26-year-old's wage demands, said to be €3.5m a season, have also given Juventus general manager Beppe Marotta plenty to think about from now until the end of the campaign.

La Gazzetta dello Sport understands Marotta is prepared to offer Aquilani a five-year contract in Turin at €2.5m a season and not a €uro more.

Pirlo is out of contract in the summer and would represent a low cost alternative capable of replacing Aquilani in the heart of the Juventus midfield.

Although he would arrive on a free transfer, the 31-year-old's wages are more prohibitive than those of Aquilani. He currently earns €5m a season at San Siro, excluding bonuses.

I'm still hopeful this will go through. Aquilani's so keen to stay in Italy that he might take the pay cut.

At all events, we must not let Juventus diddle us on the fee. They agreed it, so they can pay it or f'ck off.

if he comes back and plays with passion then he could do well as an option for us. Especially in our new found passing game

I'm not convinced about that, I'm afraid. He obv.has ability but I'm sceptical about whether he's suited here, and he'll be mightily narked about having to come back anyway. We'll just have to hope for the best if it does happen.

oh i agree. Thats why i said "with passion". He'll prob come back, be narky and be a bit poor. If juve don't buy him someone else will. Who knows we might luck out and someone wants to pay more. an italian side who has just got a bit of money and wants to splash out. OR use him in part of negotiations for someone else. Like hamsik or jovetic. or pastore!

He's off to Juve; the fuckers are just playing hardball with him because they know we're not going to take a lower fee which is already 4 million less what we paid when he was broken.

He'll gladly sacrifice 5 million euros over 5 years to stay in Turin.

i <3 pastore

He will stay at Juve I expect it's brinkmanship.
However, I would not be that heartbroken if he came back, Kenny might even know what his best position is , something that Rafa struggled with when he was eventually fit, and Roy did not get a chance to fuck up. The only problem is however he is too similar in many ways to Ming. Who ironically also suffered from the manager who purchased him, not getting the best out of him as he did not know how or where to play him, Kenny comes along and "Bingo".

I saw enough little cameos of Aquilani on the few occasions when played as a forward mid-fielder, to see a very good player in there, which is what he is proving in Italy. He never ever had a fair crack of the whip.

We could do with the cash to help fund a couple of other players though

regards

I'd love Aquilani in Maxi's current position. He's offer plenty to our attacking link up play and will be very clever with Suarez..

If Stevie played the holding role we could put out a tasty looking CM 3 (Probably only for a game or so though, before Aquilani got a cold or something).

Ming---Aquilani

----Stevie------

Stevie Aquilani and Ming moving forward as a triangle would pass anyone off the pitch.. Then Suarez/Carroll to slot home their through balls.. Creativity in the team!

There's no way we can incorporate Gerrard, Meireles and Aquilani in the same first team.

I would like Alberto back though, but if the money raised was going towards a decent DM or LB then I'd have no complaints.

Why is everyone so intent on all of them playing together.
WE DON'T HAVE A FUCKING SQUAD AS IT WAS CLEARLY EVIDENT AGAINST WIGAN!!!!

We need to have quality players on and off the pitch. When are people gonna understand??
I'd love to have Aquilani back. He'd be the perfect player for our current system.

I don't see why not squiggs if SG were to play the holding role. I know many will argue that we'd miss out on Stevies goals (which don't seem to be coming so easily in recent seasons), but it wouldn't be the first time a player has moved back to a more withdrawn role as time starts to catch up with them.

Anyways, Aquilani will probably stay in Italy and make this debate pointless mate.

Juve already screwed us over royally for Poulsen. Fuck 'em, stomp up the cash or Alberto returns. His form is such that there'll be a few clubs in for him.

Anyhow, I wouldn't mind Kenny running the rule over the lad in pre-season to make his own assessment of him. He is a creative player and that's what we typically lack within the squad.
