Any chance he'd ever drop Gerrard?

This comment from yesterday's Press Conference was quite telling...

“It is always easier when things are going well. Now we have made some mistakes. I don’t like players showing disappointment with body language, it’s not positive but each player is different. It is important to show leadership and to bring people on board. It is important to show the right approach to your team-mates and we have said we want to improve this.â€

I'm sure he'd call it "resting" him or something, but does anyone think he'd have the balls to do it?

It'd be surprising, but Rafa's done some different things during his time here.

There were a number of players that did that, but I wouldn't have been shocked if Lucas had stayed on and Gerrard came off last game. He has removed Gerrard before, particularly in the Derby, but it would be super ballsy to do it when he's not far from being sacked.

It's be the most ballsy move ever to be fair.

Lucas, Masher and Aquilani in the middle of a 5 man midfield, and go for it.

I almost want him to do it now. Ha!

It would be funny if it worked and we started mauling teams 5-0. Turns out Gerrard was stifling the less confident players.

Considering the stink that substitution in the derby caused, it would probably be a resignation note...But id never accuse Rafa of a lack of balls, he will do whatever he thinks is right for the team hes the ultimate pragmatist.

If he dropped Gerrard, but retained Lucas, and we got beat, he may as well just get a taxi to Speke Airport straight from the match. Of course, we might win. But it's a hell of a gamble.
Plus, Gerrard would inevitably spit the dummy, their relationship (ha) would be totally f'ed.
If he does it, I'm sure it will be the end for 1 of them at the club.

He wouldn't have a job now if it were not for Steven Gerrard.

Gerrard will always be more important to this football club.

He's also our best footballer by *miles*

Benitez knows all of the above, and will not drop him because of it.

All this 'Gerrard kept him in a job' chat is frankly bollocks.

Sure Gerrard's performed miracles, and won us many a game, but he was never a 20 goals a season man until Rafa came along and made him a far far better player. And for all the 'Gerrard rescued us in Istanbul' chat, people easily forget that we humped Leverkusen without him, went to Juventus and got a result without him, and that it was Garcia and plenty of others who contributed hugely in that run. We're not, and never have been a one man team.

I think he'd definitely do it if things were going well and his job was secure.

To do it now would be suicidal.

why would he do it? kuyt has endured far worse form but still gets selected week after week.

I agree with those veiled criticisms of Stevie's performances this season. The Wigan game was particularly bad. He really looked like he couldn't be arsed. It's bad captaincy and unacceptable behaviour.

I wouldn't drop him, but I'd sub him at HT against Lille if he played like that again. And, much as I want Rafa to be replaced, I would admire his guts if he did that.

I, probably along with Brendan, am one of the least likely posters on here to criticise Gerrard, but there have been games this season where he's not looked 100% committed - and it's not gone unnoticed in the stands.

I'd love Rafa to do it. It would almost certainly mean the sack.
Do it Rafa, do it today!!!

I think we're playing with fire here boys.

Gerrard does need a kick up the backside, though his injuries this season shouldn't go unnoticed.

What if he has a public spat now with Rafa ahead of the World Cup? You know we're asking for trouble and if Benitez stays beyond the end of the season the press will lap it up and even if it isn't a big issue, they'll turn it into one which will increase speculation, and interest.

No thanks. He needs a kick up the arse but Rafa's at least tried to do that by generalising it and not pointing the finger. The game tonight it irrelevant as any kind of punishment, because ultimately it's not 'the' priority for our season now, so even if players get 'rested' later, they'll be back in the side on Monday. What's the point?

Hmmm, I'm with mark. I think Stevie needs a kick up the arse, but dropping him pre-WC means endless speculation 7 pushing him towards teh exit.

Personally, I think he's got one eye on the World Cup anyway. I'll probably be strung up for it, but I think he's not as committed as usual & wouldnt be surprised if he's worried about getting injured & missing out on his last chance to do it on the world stage. Considering the season we're having & dont even blame him if that's somewhere in his mind.

To be clear, I'm not saying he's thinking 'I'm not getting injured, fuck tackling him' I think it's just a worry he has that's effecting his game, maybe not even that consciously.

I wonder that there may be at least some part of Gerrard's form, attitude and - yes - occasional petulance, that is down to his personal dislike of Benitez and the fact that he, and a few others, have had enough and want (or expect) him to go this summer

No.

He's stuck with a number of lesser players when they've been off form, so i can't see him suddenly dropping Stevie (even if some of his recent displays merit it).

the last time gerrard's form was this bad gh gave gerrard an almighty public dressing down basically telling him he was believing his own press, gerrard was flying after that. I can't see rafa ever doing that.

Tomkins hinted as much in the piece someone posted the other day.

I should think Gerrard and Carra in particular are starting to think that way given their age. Their silence in backing the manager this season (relative to Reina, Torres, Masher etc) has been somewhat telling.

I'm sure there's some truth in that, but I still think it's unacceptable. He's playing for Liverpool, not for Benitez.

I'd drop gerrard, his general attitude has been very poor. The captain should be able to put aside his differences with the gaffer on the pitch and at least look like he is giving a shit on the pitch.

Kuyt is different he's just shite (at times) but aleast he gives his all.

If Gerrard doesn't like it at Liverpool he should be sold, preferably abroad. it wouldnt be the first time he's wanted out

Another pathetic, moany, team-mate berating, lazy performance from Captain Marvel.

would you have posted if gerrard played a blinder today?

If I was Gerrard I'd be standing there wondering who I'd upset so much in a former life to be stuck in a team full to the brim of talentless plodders. I wouldn't blame him if he decided to fuck off in the summer. His timing of the Chelsea saga stunk but he'd be well within his rights to call it a day now.
