Klopp said it as a reason why we didn't buy anyone. I don't get the issue.

From the date of the article Klopp said it not later than last August, so it would be interesting to know whether he would still take the same view but, even if not, what else is any manager going to say when asked to comment publicly on the quality of his players?

We either take Klopp at face value and accept his belief that he couldn't improve the squad, or we don't and accept he didn't improve the squad regardless. I think whichever way you look at it he fucked up. I don't think VvD was the only player who could have improved us. I think there are loads who could. I'd rather have Ryan fucking Shawcross than Lovren. I'd rather have Sakho. I think he made a total mess of the window. You don't. Fine.

The sheer expense in this current financial culture makes the stakes incredibly high. Fans might sit back and claim they may as well buy so-and-so instead, but unless that second or third choice turned out to be brilliant the same people would be queuing up to complain about what an obscene waste of money it had been. It's really disingenuous to pretend it would be otherwise.

- It goes without saying that this is a high stakes game.

- I don't really get this obsession with centering the argument around what "brilliant fans" think (or the media) for that matter. Who cares? We're talking about what's right for the club and there is nothing wrong with putting forward different opinions.

- The "first choice vs waste of money second choice" argument has already had plenty of holes put through it, e.g. Klopp wanted Goetze by all accounts as his first choice who would've been an an obscene waste of money.

I understand that the general opinion is that Klopp and co wanted VVD. I just think we could've been more flexible as there are other decent options out there.

As I said, there is no middle ground here. It's the same 'ol argument we've had a million times before where one set of fans will voice an opinion and the other will go "oh, well, you're just a fan, what do you know, I prefer to trust in the judgement of the manager".... *slow clap*.

I think Klopp has done brilliantly in his hires. We are getting the right sort of output for the money we are paying right now. I really think he knows what he is doing and also what is likable about this manager is that he won't just dismiss players straight away - he will give them enough chances to prove their worth before he makes judgement. All this does mean that he is willing to let Lovren go or maybe he figures that both Lovren and Matip cannot be trusted to stay fit over the course of a season and we do need extra players on board to cover in such cases.
