I reckon that Carroll will do very well this season, finish as our top scorer just ahead of Suarez and Kuyt, and will go some way to justifying the £30m price tag
Me too.
The fee isn't so much pressure on Carroll as on Commoli and Dalglish IMO, it was a startling punt on a potentially very good player, as of yet unless Carroll goes out and terrorises defences like a la Drogba of seasons past then he will not be able to justify that fee...

I wish in a way we had not bought him, certainly not at that mental fee, it would have given us more options this summer if we hadn't and he would have cost millions less if we had wanted him now and not january! Of course hindsight is a wonderful thing, we needed another striker at the time and even though he didn't actually play for us much we weren't to know that. I like him and think he could be a good player but never in a month of Sundays is he worth 35M. Dalglish and Commoli have certainly been bold with there signings, considering the money spent and the fact that it's still a coin toss as to whether we finish top 4, in effect if the complimentary siigning of Downing is considered then it's 50M on two players who will have to perform to their absolute best for us to get value for the money.

It's brave to say the least!

There is of course a lot to be said for a huge target man beasting defenders and scoring powerful goals, I have a feeling he's going to be a legend for us, i fucking hope so anyway!.

If Carroll does not do as well as Sergio, the price tag will be a millstone around his neck with the sword of Damocles waiting....
That's the most dreadful mixed metaphor I've seen for a very long time. ;D
Ha. At least it painted a picture.

Twitter folks claim two facts.

One is that the friendly XI put out yesterday in salary terms is in the top ten of the premiership.

Two is that Carroll is well short of his fitness targets.

Twitter folks are usually full of BS.

Carroll looks much fitter and slimmer than since he joined us. Starting to look like the Carroll that was ace for Newcastle.

The salary thing I can believe though.

Cole 100k
Poulsen 50k
Degen 50k
Insua 20k
Soto 25k
Doni 30k

I've got loads of doubts and worries about Andy Carroll, but I think he'll do alright for us.

20+ goals in all comps.

I'm very concerned aout Carroll. I don't think he'll be a certain success as some might say. Some question marks over him.

I'm very much on the fence with regard to Carroll.

I am of the belief we shouldn't have signed him in January however. If we desperately wanted him, we surely could've got him this summer and not been forced to pay such a ludicrous fee.

I agree in part, although I can see why we bought him as we needed a striker. I just don't agree with the fee and the fact that we could have signed somebody perhaps better and more established as a replacement for Torres.

We needed a striker so we paid a premium to get one who was injured and was only ever likely to give us a couple games at 100%?

Well as Kenny said at the time we bought him for 5 years, not 5 games. But even then, there'd be others I'd rather pay £35m for a period of 5 years.

But then again I see your point. Like I said, I'm very indifferent to this signing.

If he scores less than 15 goals people the press will undoubtedly brand him a massive flop and use him as stick to beat Kenny with, justifiably so to a certain extant, when you smash the clubs transfer record for a player with half a season of top flight experience and then spend another 30 million on supporting players to get the best out of him it really is a colossal gamble. On such wagers are the reputations of great managers built or destroyed, its a bold move, I would just rather we had gambled on a player with a brain

How do you think he'll do this season? Fitness permitting, I think he'll do well.

Does he fit into the team properly? I anticipate we'll be mixing and matching a fair bit this coming season. It won't all be a matter of feeding Carroll. When he IS the favoured option I'm sure we'll be set up in a way which utilises his strengths well.

Are Downing, Adam and Henderson all bought to put balls on his head? Yes (Downing especially) but not exclusively. See above.

If they are, does that mean we're focussing too much on how to utilise Carroll, and where will that leave Suarez? Some on here are. I don't reckon Kenny and his coaches will be making that mistake. Suarez will be our player of the season, maybe the Prem's overall.

Will we continue to see the pass and move football we were getting used to? Most of the time, yes. There'll be times when we depart from it but I don't expect that to happen regularly. Carroll is no mug on the deck and can defo play his part in such a style.

If we play Skrtel and Carragher as our cb-pairing I'm afraid we'll see route one football more than we'd like. It has happened before...the easy way out.

i've got a sneaking suspicion you don't like andy that much skully

Oh no, someones made a video of Carroll playing his first pre season match and his touch is awful.

Shocker!!!!

Some people have way to much time on their hands when you make a video like that.

Not that it makes much difference in the long run because its just a meaningless friendly but he didnt even look like a professional footballer in that video, that was very uncomfortable viewing

Most of it was just the defence getting to the ball before him, I'm sure you could pick a video of most players having a game like that if you're selective enough. He looked alot better against Gala.

I was in the boozer watching this. An shouted "TWAT!" just as he connected. Felt like i'd scored. Chimay Red every fuckin where.
