Liverpool to price Andy Carroll out of return to Newcastle

Liverpool will allow Andy Carroll to return to his native North East if Newcastle United make a £20 million offer for the out-of-favour forward.

Their asking price will put Newcastle’s determination to capture the 23-year-old to the test and the strong likelihood is that they will be both unable and unwilling to meet it.

Liverpool, though, feel it is a realistic fee to seek for a player who cost £35 million just 18 months ago and enjoyed an impressive end to last season.

Newcastle made an unsuccessful attempt to re-sign their former player on loan at the weekend and Liverpool have made it clear that they are unwilling to consider a temporary deal for Carroll at this stage.

The Newcastle hierarchy is no longer optimistic of securing a dramatic return to Tyneside for the player the club sold in such contentious circumstances in January 2011. While they believe that Carroll, who is at present on holiday in Brazil, is willing to play again for the team he supported as a boy, they have not found Liverpool to be enthusiastic negotiators.

Newcastle were only prepared to sign Carroll on a season-long loan with an option for a permanent transfer, yet after paying them such an inflated fee for the striker, that is not a scenario favoured by Liverpool.

After missing out on Luuk de Jong, who is set to leave FC Twente for Borussia Mönchengladbach, Alan Pardew, the Newcastle manager, had been eager to establish whether Carroll could settle back in the region without attracting lurid off-field headlines. The club were prepared to pay only a proportion of his wages next season before a deal they valued in the region of £12 million.

Seconded.

Johnson is one of the fee players we have who wouldn't look out of place in the Manchester or chelsea sides. But let's sell him anyway, cos the press keep saying he can't defend.

That must be why we had such a poor defensive record last season, oh hang on, no we didn't.

It's not like Rodgers plays with full backs who have to push up the pitch to provide support anyway, oh hang on, yeah he does.

I actually rate Johnson quite highly, but I think if we could get £12-15m for him we'd have an opportunity to greatly improve the distribution of quality in our squad over the next 5 years. He's 28 so his value will decline rapidly over the next 2 years, he's injury prone, he's on astronomical wages, and he *does* have significant flaws in his game.

Let's say his total cost over the next 5 years will be £37m (£12m fee foregone plus £5m wages per year). I think we would be wise to invest that cash in 2 players around 23 or younger, one a right back and another a creative attacker. Then after 5 years you've got 2 players around 28 years old who are likely to be worth a decent amount instead of a 33 year old right back worth nothing.

Spoken to #Nufc re Carroll: reluctant to move from season loan with option. They don't think #lfc will do business with them on those terms.

Perhaps that's understandable in light of £35m etc, but less optimism deal can be done in spite of Carroll's willingness to return.

Carroll has been on holiday in Brazil, by the way. The country. Not Alan. I'm almost certain about that.

I like GlenJo, I think he is one of our better players and I think Rodgers style would be made for him, he is still only 28 and thats the peak for a footballer so if we were to consider selling I would want a) a sizeable fee for an international defender at the peak of his powers, and b) a like for like replacement ready to go. If either of those things is missing then there is no point in selling.

Its like the Torres/Alonso deals, sure we got great prices for them but we were unable to effectively replace them so for all the money saved it do the team no good

"The offer to Liverpool over the weekend is nothing more than a bluff. They are declaring their interest in a player they know they have no chance of signing on a temporary basis and who they do not have the money Liverpool are looking for to let him leave for a season.

Newcastle’s move is designed to rock the boat. It is a move designed to stir Carroll’s inner yearning for a homecoming in the hope he sets his heart on it and does his bit to make it happen."

This line always gets trotted out but I think it's woolly thinking. There's no fundamental reason why money from a good sale will get spent badly. Generally some money will be spent well, some badly. Let's say it's 50% each. If you make a shrewd sale and bring in £20m, and at the same time spend £20m on a flop, then that funds the £20m successful purchase one can expect to make next time. The caveat is not to rush to spend money as we did with the Torres/Carroll affair.

The solution to making an excess of bad signings isn't to cut off your revenues so you can't afford any signings at all.

Funny. Its from the Ryder journo who apperantly is Newcastles "spokesperson" in the media.
Everyone says he's got a direct line in to what happens at the club.

Ah right.

Tell Andy I said hi the next time you speak to him lid. Ta.

Lol, bit out of order that.

Most well respected Journos in Newcastle are saying the same thing - that Carroll wants back to Newcastle.

Hardly comes as a surprise anyway, he's a lifelong fan and a Geordie.

Black and white issue: Kop reject Carroll WANTS to make Newcastle return
A homecoming appeals to the Liverpool striker more than West Ham, Fulham or a move abroad - and the Geordies know it as they haggle over his fee.

Andy Carroll will push for a move home to Newcastle as his current club Liverpool try to thrash out a deal with the Magpies.
England striker Carroll was shocked to learn he will be allowed to leave Anfield, either in a straight sale or on loan with a view to a permanent exit, and he wants the final say on any transfer.

The big Geordie, who left Tyneside for Liverpool in an eye-popping £35million deal 18 months ago, has told pals that he wants a return to St James' Park, rather than a possible switch to the likes of West Ham or Fulham or a move abroad, where he has been linked with Italian giants AC Milan.

And Carroll's choice is known to Newcastle, who will try to get him back on the best terms possible as they haggle with the Kop about how to do the business.

Liverpool are upset that the Toon leaked their interest and the fact that they did has held up talks as both sides seek the upper hand in the discussions.

However, Liverpool are under pressure to broker a deal that suits all parties, as new manager Brendan Rodgers will not want Carroll to fly to America to join the Reds' pre-season tour.

Rodgers wants Carroll away as a transfer would give him extra funds to make his own moves in the month before the season starts - Liverpool have been strongly linked with Fulham's goal-scoring midfielder Clint Dempsey.

Carroll was not on the club's flight to the States on Monday as he has been given extra time off after appearing for England at Euro 2012.
He is due to join his team-mates in the USA in a week's time if he is not moved on by then.

The thing as we all know is that he was never worth 35m in the 1st place . To be honest , i reckon 17-20m is also above his true worth . He's never actually done a huge amount to warrant these prices , what half a decent season in the prem and a goal in the Euros ? . Everyone is just valuing him on the so called potential , this idea that he could be an 'unplayable beast' .
I guess that's the gamble we're taking but i reckon it's a calculated one , he might start scoring again but if so it will be in a team built to his style .

If he is sold, I sincerely hope there will be no weeping, gnashing of teeth here when he become another Zlatan or Didier or name your favourite tall forward....

I don't understand why you take everything to the extreme. It would have been smarter for Rodgers to keep speculation to a minimum but instead his vague comments have been interpreted in all manner of ways, which the player will no doubt see and will affect his mind

That's a completely acceptable viewpoint to take, and yet, according to you, that means Rodgers will only been given 6 weeks to turn the club around?

You sound like a WUM at times.

Stick your wum up your arse, sunny is one of the best lpool fans I know.

Fuck me this place is silly at times.

By the way, I'm on new York time, it's 9.30 here and I'm in a bar with wifi. And pissed. So fucking smoke me.

When's Carroll acquiring the technical skills of those 2?

So we've come out and basically said 20m, no loans - Carroll is yours.

I'm happy with this.
