Alonso on Benitez...

Re: Alonso on Bentiez...

We're never gonna agree, and frankly I've run out of energy to continue on arguing about this. (For now)

Re: Alonso on Bentiez...

Benitez was out of order expecting Alonso to miss the birth of his child for a game of footy. I don't care if you get paid £2.50 a week or £100k a week, it shouldn't be an expectation that you prioritise your job over your family. If it is, look for a new employer.
He then turned 'cock' in that he created a vendetta.

Also, good to see the old 'Xabi was shit for 2 years' is back, life wouldn't be the same. Is this from the same spanners telling me that Lucas is playing OK now?

Right...

Re: Alonso on Bentiez...

Larry - simple question.

If Xabi hadn't been markedly poor for the previous seasons, how come we couldn't get an offer of more than 12m for him when we tried to off load him? I mean, if he was always at a 30m level, wouldn't we have had no shortage of takers for him?

How anybody can say that he didn't have two under-par seasons prior to 08/09 is beyond me.

The be all and end all is Rafa is more important than Alsonso.
[/quote]

Yup, Rafa is here and Xabi isn't, Rafa is the manager and wanted to sell Alonso last season Xabi saw it as some kind of 'diss' and decided he needed to leave. He is a professional footballer, so why go on about how 'professional' he was during this whole thing, he was supposed to be professional its his job to do that.

In the same way Barry waited it out last summer Xabi waited it out this summer, he actually had the bottle unlike Barry to hand in the request even if it was very late, but to those who hate him for doing so..it would have jack all difference to out summer spend and who we purchased, for that we can thank the custodians of our great football club.

He was better last season than the previous 2, I'm not disputing that. After all, didn't he win player of the year on here? Shit/medicore etc. for 2 seasons though? I don't buy that. Strangely enough, I don't think this issue of his medicority came up much till it was common knowledge that Benitez was offering him round every team in Turkey, Belgium, Jupiter etc.
We bought him for £10.something mil didn't we and Benitez wanted £18M or so off Juve last year. Real's/City's dosh and spending ethics aside, we wouldn't have topped that this year.
In my opinion of course.

I understand, I just don't agree.

When we get more than twice the sum we were intially offered just one season later suggests that the improvement was quite spectacular.

If you live in cloud cuckoo land, yeah.

These players earn SHIT loads of money and I'm sure it stipulates in contracts that a player must be available for games when fit, give or take the odd exceptional circumstances.

Alot of money rides on both the club and the competition that they're in and if a game is lost because a club becomes a soft touch with one of it's players, the club has then lost out on revenue and the fans who pay extortianate amounts of money to watch these games (and in turn help fund said players massive wages), have been short changed.

In a business that's built on a shit load of revenue there's little room for sentiment. This isn't a guy working in an office, it's a player in an exceptionally fortunate position of playing one of the Worlds biggest sports at the highest level, for one of the Worlds biggest clubs, for the highest level wages. Alot is riding on him, which is why there is so much insurance backing him up too.

Rafa publicly stated he wanted Xabi to stay. If Xabi wanted to stay he only had to say so and he would still be here. He wanted to leave and he did for top dollar.

So, if you were a footy player Mark, and enjoying the financial trappings etc. that come with it, you'd prioritise your job over your family?

Re: Alonso on Bentiez...

It's not about priority, it goes with the territory. If you're in such a fortunate position in life that has it's massive comforts, I don't think it's unreasonable to expect certain sacrifices.

Players retire on average in their mid-30's and have the rest of their life to do what the fuck they like, when the fuck they like without any financial worries. Forgive me if I'm lacking in sympathy for the guy.

Re: Alonso on Bentiez...

No-one should miss the birth of their child it has more importance than a football game in my opinion.

The birth of your first child probably being one of them

Re: Alonso on Bentiez...

It does, Larry.

Nobody is saying that football should be more important to you than your family. But by chosing to be a footballer and enjoying the enormous personal privileges that go along with being a top player, come some expectations that, every now and then, require personal sacrifice that 'lesser' positions in the real world don't necessarily mirror.

I'm sure that given the choice, many folks would sacrifice having their partner in the delivery room with them for a life of untold luxury and privilege both before and after that one event.

I think it's obvious from my post.

Players go into this knowing what they're getting into. They travel the World, they play against some of the best players in the World and are paid wages most of us can only dream of.

I'm sorry but that's exceptionally different to a regular job, and whatever the morals of it all, the players and their families know the commitment that's required at that level and the potential sacrfices their family life may be exposed to.

Re: Alonso on Bentiez...

I think he should have allowed him to witness the birth but this really isn't the issue, is it.

It's that it wasn't reconciled soon after but instead continued to fester.

You can point to a public press releases all day but, again, it means fuck all if your working relationship is fucked. My only anger with Benitez over this issue is this failure to mend bridges.

His actions were understandable enough.

Re: Alonso on Bentiez...

I don't think footballers sign up as footballers *knowing* one of the things they have to sacrifice is witnessing the birth of their children.

You're right. They sign up as footballers knowing that they MIGHT have to sacrifice such things, in extreme circumstances.

Re: Alonso on Bentiez...

Extreme circumstances? It's a game of football...

And when you 'sign up' to football you know you'll have to make sacrifices but this comes above that. It's not a Friday night curry or a a night out with the lads, it's the birth of your child, ffs.

It's one of FFF's life experiences listed in GC, and means a huge deal to someone personally, and to their wife who wants support during one of the most painful, emotional, traumatic days she'll witness.
