All The Other FA Cup Shite (25-27.01.2013)

Feel a bit sorry for Lambert tbh. He's proven to be a very talented manager but maybe he's just at the wrong Club and the wrong time. Villa have been on the slide for a few seasons, it's no real surprise they're a mess now.

O'Neill wasn't good enough for some Villa fans.
Houllier wasn't good enough for almost all of them.
McLeish wasn't good enough for every one of them.

Now it seems Lambert isn't the man they want in charge either.

Why the fuck can they not point the finger at the owners and/or players for a change?

With fans like that, i'd quite like to see them go down.
Oh the irony.
You didn't feel to sorry for Dalglish did ya?

Obviously it will never happen and i'm sure many of you would disagree but personally i'd love if they gave the 4th champs league place to the winners of the FA Cup . How good would it be to have a second competition that really meant something again . I was watching some of the stoke-city game and there were loads of empty seats in the stoke areas . The stadium should have been packed for a big knock out cup game against the league holders . I'm fed up, especially with these mid-table teams, not being up for the cup or teams wanting to get knocked out so they can concentrate on the league .

Ok giving the place might not solve all problems as the league earns more money but it would generate a whole lot more interest then you get now . And i'm not even some old romantic , i just think winning a big cup deserves more reward than finishing 4th . 4th is for losers .

Part of Lambert's predicament is his own doing I think. He's allowed three of the starters in last season's defence to go - Hutton on loan to Forest, Warnock on loan to Bolton, and Collins to West Ham. Even the keeper has changed, with Guzan taking over from Given. Some departures / absences were beyond his control - Cuellar had decided to leave for Sunderland as a free agent at the end of last season before Lambert took over (he hadn't played that much anyway), and Dunne, their leader at the back, has not played at all this season due to injuries.

Sure, the guys who have been let go or frozen out might not have been great shakes, and Villa's defence wasn't exactly stellar last season, but still, they were far from the worst defence as a unit then.

As far as I can tell from their lineups this season, Lambert's defence this season looks like this:

Three guys in their defence have started more than 15 league games so far:
> Brad Guzan - a backup keeper with limited games and was apparently he was let go and then re-signed,
> Ciaran Clark - a young holdover from last season who had played maybe 40% of the games in the past couple of seasons, and
> Matthew Lowton - brought in from Sheffield United (League One) in the summer.

After that, the most regular starting defender is Ron Vlaar, a summer transfer from Feyenoord, with 14 league starts (no subs).

That's a regular defence that comprises a backup keeper, a promoted squad player, a new player from League One and a new player who is also new to English football. The other defender is either another promoted squad player with limited games in the past seasons, or another new guy from a Championship side (Boro). In other words, a back five that's more often than not, playing together for the first time this season.

Surely, if he'd had more funds, he could've gone for better and more experienced defenders and that might have fixed some of the experience / coordination problems, but still, did he (or their technical director, if there's one) get too hasty in clearing out the senior players at the back?

And we still contrived to lose to them at Anfield. Fuck!

Chelsea were dire in the 1st half but are dominating now. Mata had a great chance to make it 1-2 already.

Is that the same Forrester who was a big deal a few years ago?
He's really playing for a move. Brentford's best player.
